Weakness:

Poor customer service and failure to return telephone calls in a timely manner. It will take them a week to return your call.

USAA is the worst car insurance, my car was hit by one of their insurers on November 11, 2007 in Wash, DC. It has been over a month and I am still driving a recked vehicle because they state it is drivable. Their customer service and claims department is the worst I have ever dealt with in an accident. Will not pay for a rental car over a weekend will bill the customer for weekends.

Strength:

They are great at taking my money and never giving me anything in return.

Weakness:

They don't give a rat's rear end about their customers. Oh, did I mention they try to sell you increased car rental coverage and some credit report bull hockey every time you call them.

I have a USAA home and car policy and I am very DISSATISFIED with them. I hav e filed three claims with them and have not received one red cent. Let me tell you my HORROR stories. One day, the water to my house would not come on. The plumber came and said the broken line was under my house and it would cost thousands to fix it. When I called USAA they asked me where the leak was and I said under my house and they said they would not cover fixing it unless it caused DAMAGE to my house. I said that if it wasn't repaired that it WOULD cause damage. They said that since I had already told them no damage had occured as of yet, they would not pay. I got nothing. Story number 2...I woke up one day and my inground pool was almost completely drained. Something had happened, either the ground froze or shifted and the liner had cracked into a million pieces. I told USAA that the liner was about 5 years old and they said they would NOT cover it as it was too old. Story number 3... someone keyed my car while I was at a concert..I called USAA and they said if I filed a claim that first off I had to pay the $500 deductible AND go to one of THEIR "authorized" repair shops. I said I wanted to go to a shop of my choosing and they said in that case, they would send out a field representattive to look at the car. Now this is the kicker...she said I would be contacted by phone by another representative that would "see how my claim would affect my policy." I asked her to elaborate and she said they would have to see how that would affect my renewal! I hate USAA! They will do anything they can NOT to pay you. Please someone tell me a GOOD insurance company so I can switch!

I am a USAA legacy and have carried their insurance since I got my license. At first it shocked me that so many people disliked USAA, as they have one of the highest customer approval ratings in the industry, then I realized that none of them have USAA. It has been my experience that USAA are bulldogs when it comes to claims, and as a customer, I would have it no other way.

I was involved in a 4-car accident when I was 17, which I was responsible for (not as dramatic as it sounds, a domino rear-ending in Christmas traffic), and they had rental cars on site within an hour of the accident for two people who wanted them. The claims officer I spoke with was incredible, it was my first accident and I was very upset, he was very calming and kind. I totaled my truck and had the check in hand in less than a month. They settled with every car except for one passenger who was in the very front car and claimed a neck injury just as the statute of limitations was about to run out. She continued the lawsuit for nearly 5 years, all the while playing without incident on a collegiate field hockey team. She finally settled for USAA for $5,000 several months ago. I never had to pay any costs other than my deductible and my premium didn't change at all.

Some of the things that I love about USAA are that the representatives aren't robots, they make small talk while answering questions quickly and efficiently. They are also a one-stop shop with incredible rates. I have my renter's insurance and all my banking through them as well. As for my car insurance, I did a comparison through Progressive, Geico, and State Farm and at the least, I save $250 a year with USAA.

Insurance companies exist for their customers and there is no one better than USAA for taking care of their customers. I've always said I would hate to have to go up against them, but as a customer you can't beat the quality. My parents have had USAA for 30 years and they have been there with bells on any time they're needed.

Strength:

Can be cheap if you play the game right. If a member, will pay all expenses after pushing and taking sweet time.

Weakness:

Charges extra on end of 6 month term. Reps not informative of billing & give you false information.

Had my Accord with them since Mar. Paid a small amount each month for it. Added two other cars and another driver in June. They gave me a total of what it would cost to insure everything. All came to about 3x times the previous amount. They then charged me an extra 70/mo. called and asked why so much and they said that since I had two months left on my accord, I would have to pay 245/mo for the next two months because I added at the end of the term. so thats 3 cars (including the accord) & 2 people for the 3x amount plus a fee of $70? That is stupid since I could have canceled the insurance on the accord and then called and i would have started paying for all of it in June. The worst thing is that they did not mention this to me at all until I got the bill. Even the statement had my 3x amount on it. Make sure you cancel your first plan or wait till its up before adding anything to it. I would get Geico if they would meet the price. The USAA people need to get rid of these morons they have answering the phones and get someone that will provide good info. -Also when they send out a guy to inspect the damage to a car, ours just cared about how it looked and didnt want to replace mechanical defects from collision. USAA did end up paying for everything by they paid more because the inspector hesitated on the mechanical work. Is that smart work practice or what?

Collecting a lot of money

Weakness:

The so called money that USAA pays back at the end of the year - how much - a dollar or two?

I am a USAA Insurance Customer - USAA is bad. When I got hit in Laredo - USAA did nothing. Their "authorized" repair people are not good. When my Porsche paperwork was stolen from my military approved apartment - USAA did nothing. They were okay that it could be stolen.

Other USAA products have similar problems - the Bank sent my credit cards to teh wrong address - After I called and told them not to. The Investment Management comapny is bad - they are very adamant that you keep your money in a fund for five years even as the market continues to decline. You have to fight the credit card company to get support if you have been cheated by a company.

On 10/19/2006 I was on my way to work and was rear ended by Cindy Capretz who is insured by USAA. The damage to my bumper was not huge (I drive a Dodge truck with a steel bumper) but shortly after the accident I had major stiffness in my neck and shoulders. I went to an urgent care office and made a police report. The doctor at the urgent care told me to get physical therapy but I thought it would go away in time do to the fact that I am a healthy 23 year old woman. I called the woman who hit me that night to get her insurance info and she told me no and that she wanted to call them first. She also lied to USAA in her statement and is telling them not to pay for anything!

In the next month or so it was getting worse. I have been going to therapy since 12/13/2006 when I was told that I had whip lash & allot of soft tissue damage. I started treatment 3 times a week and just last month was down to 2. Last week my doctor referred me to pain management doctors that also said I had whip lash & soft tissue damage & should continue with the therapy. All this time I have fully cooperated with USAA Insurance Company by two recorded phone calls and a face to face meeting at my place of work and found out that it was a fraud investigator! The investigator did state that this claim was NOT fraudulent but as I'm sure you can understand that I am so offended they would even send him to meet with me in the first place.

I received an itemized break down from my therapy office showing treatment and cost up to this point about $10,000.
Just a few weeks ago I received a letter from USAA offering me an injury settlement of $237.00! As anyone can see this is crazy!
I called USAA and spoke with Cindy Miller regarding this issue and she is so rude, just outright mean and unprofessional. I was told that this $237.00 was their final offer and then went on to tell me that she herself was rear ended twice in one month and had no injury so I didn’t either. Can you believe she brought her personal business into this conversation as if it was in anyway like mine? I asked to talk to her supervisor Rebecca Langdon and not to my surprise she was just as rude and unprofessional as Cindy Miller, she was telling me that this claim was handled correctly and if the medical payments were more than their offer of $237.00 I will just have to pay it myself, end of story.

I am an insurance agent myself and could not believe this was how I was being treated. When my clients are involved in an accident I get involved and help them or the person they hit! My family has been insured with USAA for over 40 years, this will change.
I now have to get legal help with this that I can’t afford. I would NEVER recommend USAA Insurance Company not even if my life depended on it. They are the worst insurance company out there.
Now because of them I am in dept over $15,000 & counting.

If I caused someone injury I would NEVER press my insurance company to not pay for the damages I caused. That is so heartless! I really feel that USAA is unethical and fraudulent and I won’t stop fighting for what I deserve! If anyone knows of any other recourses out there PLEASE let me know.

All the bad ratings are from people who don't actually HAVE USAA insurance. USAA is fabulous for those of us who are their customers. If you or any of your family have ever been in the armed forces, you can use them, and should! They are not for profit - any money they have left over at the end of the year, they give back! YES! Your insurance company writes you a check at the end of the year for all the money they have left over! Seriously. Amazing company.

My husband has had USAA since 1986, and I was put on the policy when we married in 1991. I am shocked at all the negative reviews on USAA. The one thing that jumps out at me is that the majority of the bad reviews are from non-USAA customers. I'm sorry that you had bad experiences with them, but they are not working for you!! If you are not their customer, then it's not their job to be "nice" to you. USAA works for it's customers. We are the one's that pay them.
I have had nothing but good experiences when dealing with USAA. Most recently I backed into a brick wall with my Dodge Dakota. It was totally my fault. I went and filed a report with the local State Patrol office, and also called USAA. They had an adjuster out to my house within 3-4 days. I should note that I live in a very rural area. The closest large city (Denver)is 3 1/2 hrs. away. The adjuster took pictures and got back to us within the week. In the mean time, we got an estimate from a local auto body shop.
We had a check for over $1,500 mailed to us less than a week later. Our truck was completely done and paid for in less than 3 weeks.

Check the JD Powers rating and Business Weekly. USAA is the #1 insurance company in the country-hands down. They work their customers not for their competitors. I'm glad they are on my side!

My Sister and Daughter were involved in an accident with a USAA insured.24 hours after the accident they wanted my Sister to give a recorded statement.Keep in mind now that my Sister had recieved a bad head injury and was on heavy meds. Her insurance company (statefarm)told her do not record a statement this quick and with her injuries and meds it was very unprofessional of them to ask her to. Statefarm said if they wouldnt take no for an answer to call our insurance commissioner.when my sister told USAA this Mrs. Hollenbach who is from what I can tell the DEMON of USAA showed her horns and has done everything in her power to hold this case up. My daughters injuries were just as bad. They have had all our bills for over 2 months its been 4 months since the accident and they refuse to settle or even communicate. When we call its always " I have tons of these claims on my desk and I've got you in my diary to do I'll call you the end of the week. The call never comes!! Lord forbid you have to encounter the SUPERVISOR AMBER or ANGELA they are so RUDE and its honestly like dealing with children.I feel like asking when I call is this an INSURANCE COMPANY?
I have decided that I have no choice but to see a lawyer. I will also be contacting my state insurance commisioner and I advise all to do the same!
I have told everyone I know and even some I dont know RUN RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN FROM THIS COMPANY!! I also have decided that the normal process cant be used with these people you have to push as hard as they do.Thats why I will see them in court. At this point I dont care about the money I'll gladly give it all to a lawyer just to get them!
