I was rear ended by a usaa auto insured customer and let me tell you, dealing with this insurance company was not a pleasant experience. Unless you agree to using their body shops of choice and doing exactly what they say they are very difficult to stomach. I was offered approximatly 70% of the cost of damages done to my vehicle and was told to go to the body shop they chose to have it repaired and maybe they would pay for the rest as the work was being done. They also questioned was the damage even done from the current accident or was it from previous accidents? The two ladies I dealt with on the phone were much like a couple of people you would find on the Jerry Springer telivision show. I must say I have always been a State Farm customer and have always been treated with dignity by them.

Strength:

Geico will take your money and they are always reachable.

Weakness:

Geico fails to take care of the customer at the rental car place when the accident is not their customers fault.

We have Geico and another driver hit us and Geico wanted us to pay a $500.00 deductible to get a rental car even though we were not making a claim with them. We didn't appreciate this kind of a run around when we've had them for years so we're planning to switch and our lawyer suggested safeco.

Strength:

Avoiding phone calls, appointments, and payouts.

Weakness:

Taking care of the victim!

This is a horrible fly-by night company. My husband's truck was hit by a car that was left in gear at the top of the hill after the driver got out. It rolled down the hill at a high speed and did alot of damage, including tearing off the whole tailgate.

Their payouts aren't good until THEIR insurance adjustor visits. Our first appointment was for 5 days after the accident - and he was a no-show. We finally got a quote 1 1/2 weeks after the accident - for about $300 less than what it is going to cost us to have it fixed. My husband has called the company several times regarding this matter, and no one is ever at the phone - or he gets transferred to people who say they can't help him.

Today - 3 full weeks after the accident, and 2 days after leaving his truck at the body shop, we finally received a rental vehicle.

Still can't get ahold of anyone about getting the other $300 so we don't have to go out of pocket on this.

UNABLE TO DISCUSS CLAIMS ON INSURED.

DURING ONE OF OUR VACATIONS FROM OUR NORTHERN HOUSE TO OUR SOUTHERN HOUSE, WE WERE HIT BY AN INSURED USAA LADY AROUND THE D.C. AREA. MY HUSBAND DIDN'T REALLY GET HURT. I GOT 3 BROKEN BONES IN MY ANKLE/LEG AND A RIPPED BICEPT & ROTATOR CUFF. I SUFFER DAILY WITH THE FRACTURES AND HAVE ONGOING NIGHTMARES ABOUT THE ACCIDENT. THAT WAS IN OCTOBER 06, IT IS NOW APRIL 07. USAA CLAIMS PERSON KEPT TELLING ME ON THE PHONE," DON'T WORRY, WE HAVE PLENTY OF COVERAGE" YET SHE REFUSED TO INFORM ME OF HOW MUCH THE LIMITS WAS. I HIRED AN ATTORNEY. I HAVE OVER $100,000.00 OF HOSPITAL/MEDICAL BILLS TO BE PAID AND WONDER IF THEY WILL SETTLE? THE LADY WHOM HIT US, PLEADED GUILTY TO THE CHARGES AND CITATION. I HURT DAILY BECAUSE THIS LADY WASN'T LOOKING IN 3 LANES OF TRAFFIC FOR A MOTORCYCLE GOING A FEW MILES PER HOUR. I WANT MY LIFE BACK THE WAY IT WAS THE MORNING BEFORE WE GOT HIT! I DO PLAN TO SUE HER & USAA FOR THE PAIN I AM HAVING AND WILL HAVE.

Strength:

24 hour customer service and super GREAT on line service. Can adjust all your coverages with an explanation on line and not have to go over it with one of their operators. Just change your coverage and hit submit. They work with independent adjusters all over the world without any problems. In my area, their reccomended repair centers are the best in the state. They pay quickly and without complaint, in my experience.

Weakness:

Customer loyalty is fading fast. They don't care if you stick around. Eventually they will stop getting the reccomendation of older military folk like myself, and will have to reorganize or go away. They know most of my military brethren don't shop around and bank on reccomendations from senior members.

I've used USAA for 10 years and had zero problem with them. I have had to use their insurance on 2 occasions. One in a wife caused accident and once when hit by another driver they insure. Both times everything went very smoothly. Insurance premium barely went up in our at fault accident, and they were very generous with their settlement... similar to other premium insurance companies I've dealt with, such as progressive. That being said. I have had some acquaintances that were dropped immediatly upon having an at fault accident and others that had their insurance trippled. THey told me they don't insure motorcycles, but a coworker of mine proved to me he has USAA insurance on his motorcycle. Like others have said. They offer insurance to those that don't use it. If you become a liability (young with accidents) you are either dropped or forced out by price. Of course this is typical practice with any insurance company. I no longer tell people that USAA is "the place to go". I tell them about it and tell them I like progressive (my motorcycle insurer) more, but whatever works for them. I did a comparison between progressive and USAA, and it would cost 87% more to insure my cars through Progressive. I am sure if I sat down with a representative I could bring that down. But progressive would only allow you certain coverages if you added other coverages. Usaa starts with legal minimum and lets you add anything. Want collision and not comprehensive.. they'll do it. Want towing on a garaged vehicle.. they'll do it. Progressive doesn't seem to. more of a package based thing.

Strength:

Creative avoidance of paying claims

Weakness:

Refused to take any responsibility for their insured

USAAis one of the worst insurance companies. One of their insured ran thur my fence when she lost control of the vehicle. A supposed phantom vehicle ran her off the road. The insurance company is refusing to pay for the repairs to my fence even though initially the told me to get the fence fixed and they'd reimburse. Now, they claim she's not negligent because of this supposed other vehicle.

24 hour claim report line and 24 hour online claims notification. AAA Superior rating and highest JD Power ranking in insurance.

I do not work in claims, but I do work in insurance and I have my insurance with USAA. I wanted to comment on the claims situation for January 26, 2007 under Mr. Shufelt. I tried commenting directly, but it didn't work.

Claims lines are generally 24 hours a day for all companies, but that is strictly for reporting a claim that has not been called in yet. If you have called in the claim and an adjuster is assigned to it already and you want to discuss an existing claim, it will say the office is closed if you call after 4:30pm or 5:00pm. Plus, it would not be feesible for adjusters to be around 24 hours since most body shops, banks, and other departments they contact for assistance in working the claim are not open after hours or on weekends. It is usually understood that adjusters are only available M-F during regular business hours.

Accidents are never fun to be in, and the claims process is usually not a particularly enjoyable experience. I had Allstate before and they had the same hours for adjusters and I could not contact them on the weekends. The bottom line is, there is nothing unethical on the companies' part about someone having the horrible luck of wrecking on a Thursday and waiting until Monday to speak to someone. It's an industry standard and sometimes you just have to be patient. The rental car fees could've been reimbursed if you needed to get one over the weekend since the accident wasn't your fault. Hopefully, you will not have to call claims ever again but if you do, just remember to ask direct questions and voice your concerns if a process is not making sense to you.

Bad service, Bad Ethics, Just bad all around, the worst Insurance company ever!

I was just hit by a USAA customer yesterday. The driver hit the back of my car, ripping the bumper off, denting the side of my car, and back panel, bent my back passenger side wheel out and possibly bent the frame. I just bought my car three weeks ago so this kinda makes me upset.

I didnt receive a call from a USAA person but rather a third party, unknown (to me) auto body shop. I asked the shop for the phone # and claim # that USAA gave them and gave USAA a call. I told them that I wanted my car to be repaired at the dealership where I bought it as they had a collision center. (the law allows me to choose). The person on the phone said that they first need an estimate and she gave me a fax # and a phone # of the person handling the claim so that I cold have the collision center fax it to them. I asked if their was someone from there company who could come out and see the car today and she said no one was available. So after work I went to the collision center and found out that they where a Premiere repair center for USAA but USAA tried to have me bring it to some other unknown place. We called the person we where told was handling the claim and asked them to send an assignment to the Collision Center as requested by the Collision Center. This was not done, by the time I called their supposed 24hour phone line (as listed on their site www.usaa.com) and we get the message, "the call center is now closed". So I keep hitting buttons until I get a person and they look up our file and they said no liability has be placed yet and they cant do anything until Monday (today is Friday, wreak was on Thursday) because there adjuster has gone home until then. To add to my problems, the collision center said it was not safe to drive my car and that I should park my car until I can have it repaired. So now I am with out a car for at least 4 days!

Bottom line, these guys drag their feet and are quite possibly the worst insurance company on the planet. I have a bad feeling that I will just have to fork up the $500 deductible on my insurance, pay for a rental and then take there customer to court for the losses not being taken care of by there insurance company (and/or sue there insurance company).

Strength:

Unethical practices probably keep profits high. Representatives are rude, so they must not pay them much, keeping costs down.

Weakness:

If you hit someone, you'll probably be sued because they won't pay.

If you're hit, they won't pay anything within a reasonable amount, and it takes jumping through hoops just to find out.

After being hit by a USAA member, I am placed in the position of having to sue the USAA member because the company is refusing to pay a reasonable amount for my claim.

If you are hit by a USAA member, file an police report and call an ambulance if you are injured or disoriented in any way. If you have already lost the scene, go to the emergency room immediately. Also, get a lawyer immediately, ESPECIALLY if the accident was the other driver's fault. Expect accusations to be hurled, and do everything in writing, since telephone conversations mean nothing. This company is unethical and the claims adjuster I have been working with is a downright evil person.
