Strength:

Price is usually unbeatable and if you count that many years there is a refund based on total USAA claims then they are the cheapest.

Weakness:

Military and dependents only.

Would reccomend without a doubt. Wish other insurance companies were like this.

Strength:

Outstanding Customer Service and Claims.

Weakness:

A little more expensive than low cost insurers like 20th Century or Mercury. Limited availability (Member of US Military (officers, esp) or dependent of one).

The company is outstanding and offers far more than just auto insurance products. Customer service is great.

The price is a bit higher, but portions of the premium are frequently rebated to customers (either by check or in a savings type account) based on claims history that year. They are a cooperative type company and I believe are not for profit - like a credit union to benefit their members.

Strength:

Price, Price and Price! Easy to deal with and give money back (usually) at the end of the year.

Weakness:

Have to be either in the military or a dependent of one.

I decided to go with USAA last year and am very happy with them. They cut my insurance cost by two-hundred dollars a year. I had no reported tickets with my last insurance company and have two with USAA and my rates are still lower! Unbelievable to say the least, they also offer great home owners insurance...

17 year member, Superior service and rates. I rarely need to call USAA which says a lot about the superior service and trust that I have in them. For the last 17 years I do not remember ever not receiving some type of Subscriber Savings Account refund and dividend check. WOW!

Strength:

Exemplary customer service, very low rates, member-owned, not driven by shareholders. No agents to be hassled with. You can take your car overseas and still be insured by the same carrier.

Weakness:

The website is a little slow to develop, but now you can get online quotes in most states and also file initial claim reports.

Great company - have never had anything but the best experience with them. I've had auto insurance either on my own or through my parents for about 10 years. One minor accident (my fault) was taken care of without a hitch, and my family's premiums didn't go up -- the USAA adjuster thoroughly inspected the other party's car and found that the car had been previously damaged and incorrectly repaired. Because they couldn't determine how much damage I had actually caused, they wouldn't raise our rates! They did pay the other party to prevent a lawsuit, however.

I've shopped around, and no one has been able to beat the rates USAA provides. Plus, since I'm in the military, I recieve a share of USAA's profits!

My family has used USAA for almost 50 years, and we've never had a reason (cost or service) to switch!

Strength:

Every now and then, I'll meet a 50+ year member and to them, USAA is almost like family. Can any other insurance companies say that ?

Weakness:

My actual name, location and E-mail address is being withheld as employees are not allowed to discuss USAA in "media" forum w/o consent from executive management. I am a 12 year employee of USAA and a member as well. I have direct customer contact every day with our membership and claimants as my job is related to physical damage to automobiles. I have read everyones comments (and especially the bad ones) and wanted to give our members a long time employees view.
USAA absolutely strives to provide the best product to its policyholders. I know that sounds like a sales-pitch but the fact of the matter is that as employees we are empowered to make decisions many times day in and day out which benefit our members. I cant tell you how many times in 12 years I have made payment for something which I know any other carrier would deny hands down & be well in their rights to do so. USAA's standpoint many times is if we can give our member the benefit of doubt we will. I can tell you that while USAA is a company in existance to make profit & grow, its main objective of providing superior customer service has remained unchanged for several years. No company, no matter what they do, can make 100% of its customers happy 100% of the time. As an insurance company, USAA is strictly regulated in its business practices such as rate increases. All insurance carriers guidelines, policies, and code of ethics are reviewed and approved by your appropriate states insurance commision. Another words, dont blame USAA if your rates increase from an at fault accident. Unfortunately that is a fact of life in this regulatory world & the same will happen with any other carrier as well.
Bottom line : Take it from an employee. Although we are not perfect, we are about as damn close as you can get from an insurance company.

Strength:

Great customer service

Weakness:

Never seen one. Rates could be lower - but you get what you pay for.

Top notch. I've been using USAA for as long as I have been driving. I also have my homeowner insurance though them. In the time that I have been with the company, they have had to pay out on three of my cars - one was destroyed by a roommate, one was stolen, and one was totalled when a drunk plowed into in in the middle of the night. They were very generous on all three occassions, and never raised my rates. In fact the car that was hit by the drunk,a 1982 Nissan Kingcab was a total piece of mechanical trash that I paid $3600 for. Two years later, when it was totalled, the paid out $2800. Not a bad deal at all. Customer service is excellent. I always am helped right away, and hang up with the matter resolved.

Strength:

The major strength with USAA to me is the fact that I use GEICO as an insurer.

Weakness:

See Overall impressions

An absolute NIGHTMARE to deal with if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and one of their policy holders want to also be in that same place. I was hit by one of their members in April 2001, my truck had 7000 miles on it and was less than a year old. Now 4 months later I STILL have a damaged truck after TWO repair attempts by one of their "preferred" repair sites. The amount of damage to my vehicle was well over $4,000 (whole passenger side caved in at the bottom), I still have a passenger door that doesn't shut tight, a bed that is twisted, an incessant rattle in my door/dashboard, brake problems and a myriad of other discrepancies. I did not claim any personal injury (yet) (being military it is all covered anyways) but none-the-less I was still in considerable pain/discomfort from the experience but STILL didn't want to over burden the at-fault party because they were also military. But after dealing with the lovely claims dept I now KNOW why people sue insurance companies and why they win. All I wanted out of this was my truck restored to the condition it was in before the accident (not an unreasonable request). Now I get a letter from them saying they will pay a $1,000 diminishment of value for the vehicle which is all fine and good, but that doesn't come anywhere near the amount it would take to restore my vehicle properly (which should have already been done), and cover my now pain & suffering (stress the suffering part there). I think I would rather get a root canal in Uganda from a headhunter that hasn't eaten in a month than have to go through another claims experience with this company.

Comparing USAA to GEICO is like comparing Atilla the Hun to Mother Teresa... there can be no comparison between the two...

Strength:

service and reasonable fees.

Weakness:

phone only...but it's not a big drawback....usually pretty easy to reach someone.

Top shelf. I've been using them for 10 years, several of my family members also use them. Customer service has been excellent. I insure my house, cars and boat with them..decent premiums. To the complainers out there, when people process claims, rates go up....it's the same everywhere, although some other companies attempt to diguise it. Drive safely (and defensively)and chances are you won't have to worry about it. I continue to shop for better premiums and have found some but am unsure of the service level I will get..and I wonder how long some of the se companies will be around.

Strength:

Everything

Weakness:

None from my experiences with them

Having used USAA to insure a family with five teen-aged drivers over the past fifteen years, I’ve had nine opportunities to file a wide variety of claims and they’ve come through every time with a quick, professional response. Their adjusters are easily contacted and conveniently located. When payments were due, it was received within three days. I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with them every time and their rates are the best I’ve ever found, anywhere.
