usaa sucks. it used to be (20 years ago) a good outfit. the company is out of touch with client's needs, and seems to care much more about avoiding loss than taking care of policy holders. what happened that it lost it's character. FO USAA, your market-driven come uppance is coming right up. |

Strength:
Generally very good customer representatives on the 1-800 line.
Weakness:
Becomes decidedly less friendly when you start asking for more information about their practices of raising rates when your claim history is tiny. Two accidents, not at fault, $800 in claims over 13 years, and they almost DOUBLE my rate? Come now, seriously folks... Progressive quotes a much lower rate, even with the recent USAA payouts. I suppose that most folks who write reviews of insurance companies have had bad experiences, therefore I expect a disproportionate number to be negative. This is true for me, but I believe it is worth reporting my experience for others to evaluate. I am an Army officer, and an avid USAA fan for 13 years. For the first 11 years I had no claims against my auto policy (or homeowners, for that matter). In 2000 and 2001, USAA had to pay claims totaling $800. Police accidents do not show us at fault, nontheless USAA is raising our rates $1200/year. When I talked to the company they described how they were changing - radically. Sorry James from Wichita, but your loyalty is to the USAA that was (which I deeply admired), not to the "new" USAA. USAA has new "cost cutting" management, has been laying off employees, and in San Antonio is becoming known as more company (corporate) centered than military officer centered. I'm shopping for a new company that still has the old USAA spirit. Similar Products Used: Have used Farm Bureau, State Farm, and Progressive (motorcycle only), all with good results. |

Strength:
Once you complete USAA's "telephone prompt system",you're usually are able to speak to a customer service representative. Most are friendly, but their are several who are non-customer orientated, so be prepared.
Weakness:
Use of computer software analysis to determine customer risk, without management review of that analysis. We just can't believe that management concluded that as a result of claims totaling $4,500, a 46% increase is prudent and reprsents the best business practice for the USAA family. My husband and I have been insured by USAA since 1998. During the past four years, we have filed four separate claims (a total of $4,500) on two vehicles. That amount is significantly below the national average for automobile claims, and represents approximatly 1/3 of the amount we paid in premiums during the same period. If we knew today, what we know now, we would not have filed those claims. Although we're paid over $10,000 in premiums (which we believed were proper), we're now being advised that our risk has increased as a result of those "significant" claims that were submitted. USAA has advised us that our semi annual premium will increase from $875 to $2,006 (a 46% increase), as result of being transferred from their preferred group to their standard group (County Mutual). Further research revealed that county mutual insurance companies are not regulated by any state (which we believe is the avenue USAA is using to justify this 46% increase). Needless to say, we plan to leave the "USAA Family". |

A kid that is insured by USAA ran a stop sign and damaged my 2000 Dodge Dakota pick up truck. USAA is refusing to use the OEM bumber and right rear lens cap for the repair. I want my truck in the same condition it was prior to the accident. I cannot understand why they wish to vreate such negative feelings by trying to save $75.00 on the repairs(estimated difference on a OEM bumber and lens cap. DO not consider USAA as your auto insurance company as they, like many others(State Farm & Nationwide) try to rip people off. EVERYTHING. This is a dirty company to avoid. I was in an accident in 2001 with an 81 year old woman insured by this company. I can only hope that no one else ever has to go through such an ordeal such as I. I was in no way at fault, stopped at a light behind a concrete lane median which this woman crossed at a high rate of speed an hit me. I have NEVER seen a penny from this company and I have receive no help nor any sympathy. I would never in any way do business with this company nor any one in any way connected with this terrible company. The woman that hit me was found to be 100% at fault yet I have been treated by the dirty lawyers from USAA as the criminal. Similar Products Used: Check out State Farm. |

Strength:
Honest by sending over estimated insurance refunds. Courteous customer service and short wait times. Never have had to wait fifteen minutes on hold for the 800 number like most other national companies. Multiple services with one contact. Financing and insurance with one phone call. With all the worries of most military members (including low pay), it is good not to have to worry about some things.
Weakness:
Only weakness is the qualifications. Many of my friends are envious because they do not qualify for services. (Non-military.) I first tried USAA at the ripe old age of 18. I checked rates with 8 other companies, all asking for $250+/mo. USAA insured me at $85/mo. Shortly after, I had crossed a four lane road and was hit while safely in the road I was turning into. The report showed me at fault because I had turned across the road the truck that hit me was traveling. The skid marks on the road showed that the person waited till the last second to brake, and that the person turned off the road to strike me. Neither was reflected on the report, although the officer stated these facts to me. The claim was investigated, and I was found only partly at fault. I only had to pay a percentage of the claim due to the company doing proper investigation on the claim. Imagine if someone braked abruptly in front of you, causing you to hit them. On the report, you would appear to be at fault, but you would know the truth. On top of that, USAA annualy sends checks, with the attached note that their estimated insurance was over stated, and this was your refund for the over estimation. Tell me another insurance company that would do that. I am getting a home mortgage/insurance through them. Similar Products Used: Home mortgage/insurance. |

Strength:
No agent to pay. A simple 800 phone call does the job for claims or policy changes. Absolute reliability and consumer response. Integrity that is never questionable.
Weakness:
Home owners insurance may fluxuate due to limited coverage areas, since most members live near military bases. I can't believe the reviews I'm reading. I have been with USAA since 1968 for auto, home, and other insurance. I have never had a problem. Claims have been paid immediately with no hassle. It is a mutual insurance company, and if you qualify to belong, you are, of course, expected to take care of your responsibilities, like making your payments on time. If you don't, you are taking money away from me and all other members who take care of their obligations. Aside from some of these reviews, I have never heard a bad word about them. Perhaps some of these people are in the "pool" which states force companies to participate in, to provide insurance for those who have such bad records they can't get standard insurance. |

Strength:
Deceivingly cheap rates. Anyone could be cheap if they knew they would never have to pay a claim.
Weakness:
Good luck getting a claim paid through this company. I have auto and homeowner insurance on 2 cars and 2 houses with USAA. I've had this insurance for 20 years and NEVER had a claim. I had ice damage on both homes this past winter...one home actually had water running down through ceiling light fixtures and collapsing parts of the ceilings in 4 separate rooms. USAA sent an appraiser to survey the damage and he decided that USAA's financial obligation was $0.00 I am now looking for a new insurance company. I won't pay another premium to USAA and I would discourage ANY from doing business with them. Might as well save the premium in an account and pay claims yourself when they arise. You would be much farther ahead. |

USAA Insurance gives a bad name to insurance companies. The company is in business for itself and should learn how to conduct ethical business. After being in an auto accident with a person covered by USAA, USAA denied any responsibility based on the insured's lies, never seeking to find out the real truth. They did not even send someone out to inspect the damage ... which clearly shows their insured is at fault. Such business practices are unethical. I just hope that no one else has to deal with this company. |

Strength:
low rates as long as you are over 21 years of age.
Weakness:
read the review summary USAA insurance cheaper than other insurance agencies but don't get a speeding ticket or be late on a payment. If you do, they'll try to make you pay the premium in full, all at once. When you cant pay it on time. You'll get dropped like a bad habit.
