Strength:

They will be your best friends as long as you send them money and don’t file a claim.

Weakness:

Collecting on a claim may take all your waking hours. Welcome to insurance hell! ?They are now just living off the memories of the former reputable company.

I am really impressed by the horror stories I have read here! I thought that I was the only one living in insurance hell with USAA. Why are these scammers still in business? Can anyone recommend a source for help in dealing with them? If anyone cares to hear my horror stories, send me an email at capt3777@hotmail.com and I will put you in the loop. Insurance is a business where you pay someone money today to perform a service tomorrow. You want to sleep at night expecting your insurance company to be there ON YOUR SIDE when you have trouble, not be there increasing your risk. USAA has gone from being part of the solution to being another high risk. Thanks for all the posts!

low prices

Weakness:

lack of commitment to dependent members. seem to care more for direct military members.

i was a male teenage high school student and first time driver with full coverage only paying $83 a month. that is unheard of. i screwed that up, got in 2 wrecks within a month and went too high for my mother to afford. during my time without insurance i also got 3 tickets during 1 stop. no insurance no liscence and speeding. i thought i would never drive again but after a year without driving i bought a used car and decided to get the state minimum liabilty and was quoted at $117 a month. with my horrible record usaa gave me another chance and im greatfull for that. at any other insurance company i would have paid upwards of 600-700 dollars a month because of my record. usaa cant be compared to any other company.

Generally friendly customer service reps

Weakness:

Dramatic change in company philosophy in recent years Years ago they were clearly focused on the military officer community they were formed to serve - today they are just an insurance company and will do whatever they can legally get away with (notice the number of long-time "members" who have posted recent problems on this site)

I was a 35 year "member" of USAA until recently. They elected to exclude my 22-yr old son from our policy because he had had two accidents in the past 3 years (one 34 months ago). Both of the accidents were very minor parking lot accidents, and were virtually the reverse of each other - in the first case he hit someone who was backing out of a parking space; and in the second incident someone hit him as he was backing out of a space. Although neither driver was cited in either case, USAA chose to consider him at fault in both cases, and elected to no longer insure him. I therefore chose to simply purchase insurance for my family elsewhere. For the first 20 years I was with USAA they were clearly "my" insurance company - I swore by them, recommended them, and wouldn't have thought about changing. Then, about 12 years ago, my older daughter was involved in a minor accident where she was clearly not at fault, and USAA assured us this was not a problem. Three days later, however, the other driver changed his story and also found a "witness" (a girlfriend) who had "been walking nearby and witnessed the accident" (although the police had found no witnesses at the time) - and USAA decided it was an at-fault accident based on a phone call from her. My wife, by the way, had been in the car, but she didn't count as a witness since she was a passenger! I excused USAA then, and bit the bullet for the 3 years of increased premiums (I was still a strong USAA loyalist), but my view of USAA changed from "my" insurance company to "an" insurance company. After this latest episode with my son, however, they are now and shall remain my "former insurer." I also intend to switch my homeowners policy to someone else at the next renewal, as I will not do business with a company that has lost focus as much as USAA has. They are truly just AN insurance company.

No salesmen. No commission. 24 hour access. Financially rated among the best.

Weakness:

Legends in their own "minds". They're competitive and basically fair, but not as extraordinary as they would have you believe.

I have been reading these reviews with great interest. I too have been a USAA member for 20 years, having had 5 cars insured with them. They hype themselves constantly through their literature and other internal mailings. I've had no reason to doubt their advertising...until now. I have had 2 claims in 20 years. Both less than the $500 deductible I carry. They've never been out a penny with me. I've never had reason to complain. But just recently, I dropped my collision on my 11 year old car. As Murphy's law would have it, in 2 months, the car was in it's first accident. Body damage, no injuries. Since no "collision" USAA lucked out yet again! However, the other insurance company was being evasive and deceptive. I contacted USAA for assistance.(I still carry all my other coverages!) Forget it. I was merely tolerated. No matter my 20 years of premiums and current coverages. I didn't have "collision"! Phone tag, marginal politeness, and zero follow-up was NOT what I expected from USAA. Where's the beef? Ironically, they didn't need to pay anything! Just help me with the other insurance company that was bullying me around. I AM a paying member. NOPE! Such a disappointment. I've learned 2 things: 1.) Think long and hard about dropping collision. Murphy's law may come back to bite you! 2.) USAA is not the golden egg of insurers. They just pretend to be.

Strength:

Low rates, prompt service, sincere customer service, subscriber savings account

Weakness:

None noted

I have been a USAA member for nearly 20 years. I have both auto and homeowners insurance through USAA. I have file numerous auto glass claims all of which were handled quickly and without problems. I have also filed 2 comprehensive auto claims both of which were paid in record time and again without a single problem. I have also had a homeowner theft claim. Again, professional, quick, and sincere service without a single problem. And where else will you find a company who pays annual dividends into a subscriber savings account.

Customer service is an absolute joke! Claims adjustors are clowns! Never go with USAA.

USAA is the worst insurance company that I have ever dealt with. One of their clients hit my vehicle and they have given me pure hell in trying to get it repaired. They refused to fix part of the problem and tried to back out of paying for a rental car. All I got was message after message; could never reach a supervisor or a call back. I had to seek an attorney over a simple accident.

Incredably fast crash evaluation and immediate payment by using independent agents located everywhere. Recommends reliable certified body shops that do great work for bargan prices. No Hastles, No Games, very honest and straight forward. USAA people really care about you and you needs. They get you back on the road at lightening speed.

Weakness:

Haven't found any in the last 41 years. They have always been Johnny-On-The-Spot for me, but maybe its just me. Honesty is my secret weapon! Works every time.

I started with USAA right out of College with my commission as a 2nd Lieuy in 1961. Every claim over the last 41 years has been paid to my full satisfaction, including totaling 2 cars. 1 in 1970 and my most recent 1993 Ford explorer. I lost control while eating a donut, glancing at my newspaper and turning a corner. I hit a 13" diameter tree, knocking it down and ramping up the tree trunk flipping the car onto its roof. (Sorry no tire problems) Wearing a seat belt I walked away from collapsing the roof right down to the top of the steering wheel. USAA had a check in my hand for $14,500 two days later. I immediately bought a 1994 Ford explorer, same color with 10K less miles on it for $14,250 and was back on the street with a newish 94 Explorer in less than 7 days. Honest-to-God! I have also had 3 deer hitting accidents all of which were paid in full within two working days. My rates were increased a couple of times for short times, but I'm a rough & Tumble driver and agreed to a hit in rates, being a high risk for USAA. In the last 41 years I have never had one problem with USAA for slow pay or denying to pay for an accident. They even went to bat for me when I rear-ended a not-so-smart pickup truck diver who stopped in the middle of the street at night to help a lady pick up the fertilizer bags that slid out of her trunk in the middle of the street. He did not use his flashers and I couldn't tell he was stopped until it was too late to stop in time. My fault, Yes! USAA went to court for me at no cost, lost and paid the fees. I never heard from them and had to ask for the results. This company has done an outstanding job for me for the last 40 years. What few people realize is that at the end of each year you get back a substantial rebate in the form of a savings from USAA that can be $200, 300 or more. I have 4 cars with USAA. A 1970 240Z collector's car, A Ranger Pickup Truck, a Mercury Sable and my Ford Explorer. I have gotten estimates and with the rebate at the end of the year no other insurance company comes even close. Not only am I sticking with this great company, both my grown children have USAA Auto Insurance and are enjoying the same benefits. I recommend this company highly. Give them a try. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Signed, John, one very, very happy customer.

None really - average in most areas. Used to be that they had the best service. Now it is average.

Weakness:

No customer loyalty. Don't go with USAA - they only insure those that never use the insurance.

USAA is a company I have been with for seven years - but I am switching to Progressive (and getting a better rate) now that they decided to drop ME. Imagine, after seven years of never missing a premium, I get dropped. For what you ask? Two sub-$500 claims! Over $10,000 in premiums were paid in!

Strength:

Buying insurance is straightforward and easy. USAA employees are always polite, mostly well informed, and try to be helpful.

Weakness:

I found claims service to be entirely unacceptable. I can no longer recommend USAA.

After 38 years with USAA I finally had to make a claim on my Homeowner's. It's been like pulling teeth without anesthetic. First they deny coverage, then USAA has prevaricated, delayed, depreciated, deprecated, devalued, and demeaned. It seems their policies don't mean what they say and their coverage is, quite clearly, ephemeral: indeed, it's a tissue of lies. On the basis of my recent experience and that of a close relative, I shall take my business elsewhere. It's a shame, because their personnel, in my experience, are usually helpful and friendly.

USAA is an inconciderate company for and to all. One of their clients hit our vehicle and we have had nothing but the run around. No one will return our calls and all we get are messages at times that no one is home and they know it so they won't have to talk to you. They will estimate the repairs and use generic parts to do the fix. God help anyone who has to deal with USAA. go with Geico.
