Strength:

Competitve Monthly Premiums: Auto, Home Owners, Renters

Weakness:

Severe lack of Human Affection toward members. Even toward unintentional circumstances!

I have never had to file a claim with USAA. Therefore, I can not speak intelligently about thier performance regarding "pay outs" of various forms. I primarily joined USAA because of thier low insurance premiums. The only problem that I have with USAA is, they have threatened to cancel my auto insurance policy because of bad debt with USAA Savings Bank. I experienced the misfortune of having to file for Bankruptcy and elected to not reaffirm my USAA credit card debt. And because of this, the USAA collections rep, stated that thier auto insurance entity had the right to not renew my policy this November. To some level, I can understand thier actions, but I do think doing this shows a great lack of human compassion on thier part! I have never fallen behind on my insurance payments....and this is what I get after eight years of loyality to USAA! I experienced severe financial problems, and they decide to not renew my Auto Policy, because of a deliquent credit card bill! Oh well! USAA isn't everything and life goes ON!

Weakness:

if you get hit...they are misers.

Well it took one week of calling USAA everyday and advising them that they better have some good proof that their client was rearended into us..because I knew he lied. well he had absolutly no rearend damage and a week later they coughed up the repair check

Strength:

1--Low premiums compared to other insurers 2--They sent a letter saying they will waive the deductible for hurricaine claims, which is generous, if we ever get the claim settled for a reasonable amount. (I think they did this, though, because of the many complaints filed against them due to the fine print, new, high hurricaine deductible that was burried in the policy renewal notices.)

Weakness:

1-No personal agent to deal with 2-No local office. When calling claims, you deal only with people in Florida or Texas. 3-Adjustors tend to come from low cost-of-living states to estimate costs in high cost-of-living areas 4-No personal contact; no return of calls 5--Inconsistent, incomplete, contradictory, or incorrect information given on the phone when you call 6--Excessive delays before any positive action is taken

We obtained USAA homeowners because the company we normally used was not underwriting any new homeowner's policies in the area to which we moved. Due to Hurricaine Isabel, we have had to file a claim with USAA for home damage (holes in the roof, cieling, a destroyed heat pump, etc.) It is now 6 weeks since the claim was filed, and we still do not have an estimate from USAA or authorization to make permanent repairs (it was four weeks before an adjustor even came to our house). In these 6 weeks, USAA has never once contacted us personally; all calls have been initiated by us. When we have called, each time we have been given conflicting, incomplete, misleading, or incorrect information. When we are told they will contact us within a certain time frame, they never do. Our concerns are generally greeted with indifference, and we are referred to someone else, who we are told will "call us back" but who never does. I understand USAA insures a lot of people in the area of the hurricaine, and I expected some delay, but 6 weeks is far too long to wait before even being authorized to begin to make permanent repairs, especially when that wait can mean further, costly damage to the home, and can put us off from making needed repairs until winter.

Weakness:

will not pay

After reading all the other bad reviews I feel that I will likely give up on trying to collect the rest of the cost of my cars repair bill from USAA. I guess if it is an employee of usaa Vicky Dean from Colorado Springs that hits and damages your car even though the employee agrees that they are at fault and should repair your car usaa will not pay. Julie from CRT in Colorado Springs said that she knows someone who used to paint cars for a living and therefore, if he says a car should be painted in a certain amount of time then that is all they will pay for even though I had to pay the auto body shop an additional $400.00 to get my car back. I think that USAA is a terrible company to do business with. I only hope thAT WHOEVER DRIVES INTO YOU HAS some decent insurance or you will get screwed as I have.

Strength:

low rate - but at what cost in the end. It is deceiving. Bait and switch. Slick talking customer service reps who sign you on for extra insurance, and then when you need it, refuse to pay.

Weakness:

Don't follow through, claims adjustors RUDE and treat you like a criminal - so sad especially when you are injured and recovering physically and emotionally after suffering in a crash at a total impact of 70 mph caused by a convicted drunk driver. NO COMPASSION or caring - even for Veterans. They serve the Military for God's sake!

My wife, A USAF veteran, has had USAA car insurance (bank, house also) for over 15 years and has never filed a claim. Last year she was a passenger in a car hit by a convicted drunk driver at 60 mph who had very limited insurance. She almost died. USAA (my wife's insurance company)was forced to pay her PIP/Nofault medical costs under her SUM insurance as this crash happened out of state. USAA has treated her like the criminal, being nasty, uncooperative. harrassing her employers, trying to get her work personnel records (like she did something worng!), and have cut her off from future medical benefits without prior notice--even though she needs continued physical therapy to be able to work. She has been diagnosed with thoracic disc herniations as a result of this DIU crash. She is workig is pain - but will not give up a career she has trained for 20 years with 60 hours over a masters. USAA has stalled paying her medical bills, have caused duress, emotional stress, and humiiation with her medical care providers and employer. She is being treated like the criminal - not the victim of a Drunk Driver! She has been interrogated, investigated, and followed. This USAA company (a foriegn owned corporation - just who owns them???) is scary. They are rude, do not answer letters or inquiries, refuse to talk with you as an educated individual, and treat you LIKE the Criminal. USAA does not send copies of documents as requested. We have been forced to hire three attorneys in two states to just get the medical bills paid. Our wonderful claims adjustor from USAA (Tampa) sent us a one line memo in Oct. telling my wife that her medical bills were cut of effective in August - regardles of the treatment she has received these past two months thru Oct. This company is supposed to support the MILITARY. I feel sorry for all of the Active Duty military families left behind while their loved ones are over in Iraq getting killed and maimed while in service of our country. I am sure USAA is screwing their dependents if an accident arises and taking advantage of the situation. USAA is obviously just hiding under the"military" race card. Do not get this insurance under any circumstances. They are traitors. Whose side are they on?

Strength:

Geico is better.

Weakness:

see summary.

I have insurance with Geico, my husband is an active duty Marine and I am int he Naval Reserves. My car was rearended - the police declared the other driver at fault and advised us to contact the drivers insurance company. We contacted USAA and they gave us the runaround..4 days later no adjuster. I contacted USAA and their Claims rep Miss Turner advised that they would not pay for any of their clients damage because although the police report declared their client to be at fault that "the police officer was not on the scene" so his report is invalid. I contacted out insurances company and I am also calling around for lawyers - what couldve been an easy claim/fix for them (maybe 6000 tops in repairs) is going to cost them more. How can they be so stupid?

USAA is the worst insurance company around. Their investment services have higher than average costs and USAA Life just isn't that great. Don't have an accident our you'll have to deal with one their bone head claims reps, like the ones they hire in Tampa, FL. Real customer service from people who really care. Stay awy from USAA bank another USAA nightmare made just for people who like the USAA hassle. If your military look to AFI in Kansas. Better rates too.

Relatively Low Cost

Weakness:

Poor Customer Service Slow Response to Customer Requirements

I've been with USAA since 1970, but something has happened at the company over the last five years. My new Honda was hit from the passenger side by a backing car two days ago (30 September 2003). I reported the incident and other driver's information to USAA an hour later. It is now mid-day 2 October and USAA has neither assigned an adjuster nor even contacted me on the next step for me to take. Repeated calls to San Antonio simply gets me referred to the Phoenix Office that handles Hawaii claims (There is no USAA field office in Hawaii). However, the Phoenix Office refuses to return my calls. If that is USAA's idea of customer service, then it is time to shift companies. I strongly recommend Hawaii residents consider a different insurer. I know that I am doing so now. Carl O. Schuster, CAPT, USN (Ret)

Having been employed with USAA for over 18 years, I regret to write the company is in decline beginning in 1996 when it began to reorganize. This reorganization has been a constant for 7 years resulting in low morale and the loss of some excellent employees. The current motto within the company is to “expect change” and for the past 7 years we have seen exactly that. Please understand that I feel that “change”, within any organization is to be expected and should be welcomed in order to meet the challenge of today’s business environment. Unfortunately, constant change leading a company on a meandering course without apparent vision or foresight, leads to confusion, disenchantment and turmoil from within. A company can be as good as its employees think it is and sadly, the opposite view is like a cancer continuing to spread throughout USAA. Oddly, I still believe USAA is a good company but this is a relative statement that rings true only when it is compared to so many other less “customer friendly” insurance companies. Should someone seek to obtain coverage with USAA? This question is sort of like asking a condemned man if he prefers to die by hanging or lethal injection? One choice may be preferred over the other but the results are identical and certainly not desirable.
