Strength:

none

Weakness:

Willing to drop a customer at the drop of a hat citing "policy" that can not be changed. Have yet to understand the "policy" as it was vaguely explained to me after numerous phone calls.

I had the same experience with USAA and am appauled at their sr-22 policy. I had been with USAA for 12 years without so much as a blemish on my driving record and no claims filed in over ten years. I was given a "speed exhibition" ticket in CA and required to file an sr-22. I was dropped within a week and had to call myself to see the status of my policy, not a peep from the underwriting department of a company that so gladly took my checks every month. I believe USAA was going to just pop a letter in the mail terminating my policy. They clearly felt no need to actually inform me immediately so I could arrange for alternate insurance. I can safely say I will never go back to USAA despite a follow up call from a USAA rep informing me that I would be taken back as a customer after three years. NO THANKS USAA!

Strength:

I seem to have forgotten them all.

Weakness:

No regard to customer loyalty, previous driving records or customer credibility.

I have been with USAA for 17 years now. I have not had any marks on my driving record for over 9 years. I just receieved a "BEST DRIVER" discount on my insurance rates. I have never had ONE problem with USAA and have often been thankful that I had them as my insurance compnay. NO LONGER!!! Recently I was convicted of a driving with a .08% or higher (not a DUI, they are two distinct charges). A mistake but none the less, it happened. Doing the proper thing I contacted USAA to let them know and that I needed an SR-22 Form (proof of insurance) to be sent the DMV so I could get my license re-instated. Upon finding this out, USAA dropped my insurance - IMMEDIATELY, citing that I was to much of a risk. Customer loyalty, a perfect driving record, no prior incidents or convictions of any kind simply had no credibility and do not matter to USAA. Oh yeah, they were sooooo kind as to give me one more week to find another insurance provider before they dropped my coverage because they didn't want me to be without any insurance. The "underwriter" even tried to sugar coat the whole damn thing by saying "unfortunately, the preferred coverage policy you have can't cover this and we will have to refer you to a USAA subsidiary company". After several minutes of trying to translate her sugar coated rethoric, I had to be extremely blunt with the rep and asked her: "Yes or No, Is USAA dropping me?" "Yes" was her response. Yet another case of an insurance company willing to take LOTS of your money and then drop you the moment you really need them. They claim that if it happened once it can happen again - "Too much of a risk". That is like saying "You had a car accident and therefore are accident prone, therefore we can not cover you anymore." Even good people can make mistakes, they happen to everyone - USAA does not forgive those people or their mistakes.

Strength:

Very responsive to customer needs/inquiries Low rates (no other insurer I've contacted has ever been able to underbid them)

Weakness:

They're in San Antonio, TX. Everything needs to be done by telephone.

USAA is great. My son's girlfriend borrowed our old '84 Volvo 240 to go to her summer job last June ('03). On the way home, it was struck by a bus belonging to the local Paratransit agency that ran a stop sign. Needless to say, the '84 240 was a total loss. USAA investigated, found the driver of the other vehicle to be at fault, paid me the market value of the 240 (without charging me the deductible!), and paid my son's girlfiend's medical bills (relatively minor in this day and age - ER visit, no serious injuries, some followups for PT). Because there's no local agent, everything has to be done over the phone and may take a little longer, but they do get it done.

Strength:

Customer Service and Support. Price.

Weakness:

It helps if you know how to ask the right questions.

I read the current reviews, and noticed a gross imbalance. As usual, if you have a complaint you are often more verbal than if you don't, so I thought I'd balance the equation. My father was a Chaplain in the Navy and has used USAA all his military and retired life. I have been insured with them since I started driving in 1976. Of the several claims we've had as a family, we have always had excellent service. All increases have been well explained and we receive a dividend every year. When I disagree with policy information, it is quickly and politely explained. Even when we went through some tough financial times, USAA worked with us.

Weakness:

Total lack of customer service.

I grew up in a Military Family and have heard nothing but praise for USAA. Then on Dec. 22nd, my Landrover caught on fire and burned to nothing. I had the car towed to the dealer where USAA said they would pick it up within 24 hours. 9 days later they actually picked up the truck. On top of that, my adjuster was on vacation till Januaury 5th and left no one I could contact so I ended up just calling random adjusters to plead with them to pick up my truck. The car burned Dec 22nd, 2003. It is now January 12th 2004. I have heard NOTHING from USAA about the status of my claim. My only contact has been to call them multiple times to plead with them to pick up my truck, a process which took 9 days. The claim is not even settled yet, but so far I am EXTREMELY disappointed with the service I have recieved from this company that I had heard so many great things about.

Weakness:

Could care less about the customer.

USAA overall is ok,however twice with in a year I was hit by another party. While I wasnt at fault in either case, I felt I still needed to contact USAA to let them know and that in itself was a mistake. By being upfront and honest they declined me from getting additional homeowners. I was a "Risk". I had a 2nd home and the coverage was pretty good and the cost was low. Then out of the blue when the next bill came USAA doubled the price of the policy. Keeping in mind I had no claims they told me that they discovered they werent charging enough. Asked why I didnt get a letter about this they said that wasnt their policy. I would be out of business in a 2nd if I did that to my customers. If you want a good price USAA is the one. If you want customer service and a company that understands the consumer look elsewhere.

Strength:

I have found not one.

Weakness:

Refused to return calls. Refer every issue to legal who also does not return calls.

I was rear-ended by a driver insured w/USAA while he was going 120 miles an hour. This insurance company has flat out refused to pay for my totaled automobile or my 6 months of therapy bills or a single dime. The car was fully insured through USAA but the driver was "excluded". They refuse to produce any documentation showing he was excluded however. It is almost two years later and I am still fighting them.

Strength:

none at this time!!!

Weakness:

Everything that is in the book, customer service, prompt service, easy to get a hold of or ability to call back, name it and it's them

Last year a neighbor's child jumped off of a curb and in front of a parked SUV and right into my lower front right bumper. The child was fine and the parents admitted to fault to us and our claims officer when they came out to take pics and ask questions. The party also claimed they would call their insurance, which never happened, and pay for any damage. State Farm paid for the damages with me having to put a deductable down. Just recently I have encountered a rep from USAA, I gave them my side of the story, recorded and all, she came out and as well took pics and asked the other party questions. It's been a month and a half now and still no answers as to whether we get any money back or whatever. i have refusely called time and time again, but no answers and no return calls. Stay away from these people, they have no clue as to what is really going on here.

Weakness:

claims agents that call people liars, working with co-part salvage to steal car parts, cancelling insurance after they told 2 police offecers, 1 sherrif and 2 families that we were insured. Harrassing phone calls after I told them not to call us back only contact our lawyer.

STAY AWAY FROM USAA!!! Our son had a wreck while we were covered with USAA insurance...USAA called the sheffif whos daughter was involved in the accident, they sent an adjuster out and gave them a settlement price, had the car picked up by co-parts salvage, and told them to send the title in,2 days later they were told our insurance had expired and we we not covered. During the time the car was at co-parts the air bags were removed from the car. The injured party contacted USAA insurance company and was told they were lying, the airbags were removed before the car was moved to co-parts. The body shop and the tow truck driver both verified the airbags were not deployed and intact when the car was picked up. This leads me to believe that co-parts and USAA are involved in some pretty shady, if not downright illegal business practices.
