Weakness:

Very poor customer service. Do not give full value for losses.

My husband and I have USAA insurance, unfortunately. We were in an accident two months ago and have yet to have the situation resolved. We called USAA immediately after the accident and started the claim. We also were told an adjuster would call us within 2 business days. We ended up having to call them 4 business days later asking what we should do. We had to do all the leg work for obtaining permission to release the vehicle, faxing all reports and receipts. We constantly call asking for a status and never get anywhere. We are now paying everything out of pocket. Not to mention a car payment on a vehicle that was totalled two months ago. We have had to call and BEG for help. As I type this, we have not received a single penny from USAA. Their representatives said it normally takes no more than a month to settle claims. NOT TRUE! It's two months and counting. If I knew this would be such an issue, I would have switched carriers a long time ago. The cheap prices you pay for inurance is relected in the poor service and quality you get.

Weakness:

As yet to be determined.

After reading all these negative reviews concerning USAA I am genuinely concerned right now as to how my recent claim will be handled. I've been with USAA for only two months now, as long as I've been stationed here in Alaska. Saturday night, I was at work on the air base when my wife called me to tell this story: While inside the grocery store with my 18-month old son, a woman slammed into our car with her SUV. Ours was legally parked and not occupied. This same woman driver struck our car with enough force to push it into the vehicle adjacent to ours. Then, she proceeded to quickly leave the parking lot, but not before striking two other autos. (This was not observed by myself or my wife, only witness statements.) So, now we have a total of four cars damaged. No one hurt, thank God, but unfortunately the bulk of the damage was incurred by us on our Saturn VUE. Witnesses stated the driver was a white female, blonde curly hair, nothing further. Also, that she was driving a dark in color SUV. The tag was visible, someone wrote it down and gave it to the repsonding police officers. My conversation with one of the officers revealed that the suspect vehicle tag came back to a name and address which they would follow up on. I immediately telephoned USAA, explained what had just happened and initiated a claim. They were very polie and sounded authentic in their concern. They advised that an adjuster would be in contact with me in one to two business days. Well, again this happened on a Saturday night, it was after 9 PM when the tow truck arrived. (My car was incapable of being driven.) So I had it towed to my house where I could meet with or speak to the adjuster before deciding where to take it for repair, if it's not totaled out. Am I going to get the same rude treatment from USAA that I have read of on this wweb site? No call backs? No cash for my vehicle? This car was the only one my wife and I had between the two of us. It is my means by which to get to and from work. We purchased it brand new, still owe about $17K, yet the fair market value, at best, is only $15K. We have no rental vehicle clause with USAA, so, if our car spends a month or two in the shop, we have no car. If the car is totaled out and USAA hands me a big check for $15K, I turn around and pay off the debt, well, you can count. Regardless, I have no car, AND more debt. The worst factor in this whole saga is that the suspect driver is, if caught, probably uninsured, unlicensed, and according to witnesses, was driving so poorly as to be consistent with being intoxicated. I'm afraid I will be biting a huge loss when this is all said and done. I am remaining as reasonably optimistic as possible though, in the hopes that USAA will come through for me and live up to their company motto in servicing those who serve. My immediate plans are to contact them on the next business day and ascertain the status of my claim. Should anyone out there in "review land" wish to offer advise or condolences, please correspond to the listed e-mail address. Signed-Scared in Alaska

Usaa has one great strength---Taking advantage of inocent people!

Weakness:

Weakness----Very POOR customer service

Not a usaa member, don't want to be. Involved in an accident with a Usaa client. I was stoped at a red light and she hit us at 60 mph. My SUV was a "total loss". She said she hit us because she looked away for "ONLY" a minute! I still owe $5000 on my truck and USAA only will pay me half. They say that's what I can get a comprable vehicle for in this area. I would like to know where they are shopping. I can't find ONE! They are rude when I contact them. Never return my calls. They took a month to decide that it was a total loss. And took the rental car away from me before I could even get a vehicle. Before mine was even settled. I don't know where they think that people are just supposed to get the $$ to go and get another vehicle at the drop of a hat. I was told by USAA representative that the $2500 is just supposed to put me back to where I was, not to make me better off. As far as I am conceraned, I was driving a vehicle that I had already put the down payment on and have been making payments on. Had this woman not hit me, I would be fine. Not to mention the fact that now both of my sons have nightmares. Myself and one of my children have back troubles. I will probably have to have surgery. So much for "back to where I was"! This is still not settled from Dec 20 2004.

Strength:

Absolutely None! Using this company was a terrible mistake.

Weakness:

Unreasonable pay-off, Sloppy decision making, Refusal to investigate, Refusal to return calls, Refusal to provide a rental car, Refusal to provide a complete copy of the policy, Incompetent, rude, and disinterested adjusters, Very slow to do anything

USAA is the worst insurance company I have ever encountered. As a result of our recent auto collision, we have learned that having USAA's auto insurance has no benefit to us. We would have been better off paying the several thousand dollars to repair the car ourselves. My spouse and I were in a collision on Christmas day, approximately 400 miles from where we live. USAA's agreement to provide a rental car was worthless. Initially, a car was reserved in another city, across the state from where we were staying. USAA left us stranded. I had to rent a car so that we could drive home because USAA could not provide one, despite its agreement to do so. The cost to me was nearly $200 for a one day, one-way rental. We were unable to get a rental, through USAA, until after we returned home. Since that time, nearly one month ago, USAA's "adjusters" have totaled our new car, even though the damage can be repaired and does not reach USAA's alleged limit. The decision to total the car was reached after USAA refused to completely investigate the accident and damage, refused to talk to the witness, refused to look at the car, and refused to return numerous phone calls. In deciding the car's value, its low mileage (below 3500 miles) was not taken into account. During a phone conversation with the "appraiser", it became disturbingly clear that he knows nothing about the car. He was unaware of its MSRP and he was entirely unaware of the depreciation for the particular make and model. A few days ago, we were finally given USAA's offer, but only after we called and demanded to speak with the "adjuster's" supervisor. USAA generously offered an amount that approximately equals the wholesale value of our new car. USAA leaves us no way to replace the car. There will be quite a bit left owing with the lender that we will have to pay ourselve, as USAA's offer does not come anywhere near the purchase price we paid two months ago. USAA's "adjusters" apparently have no real authority and merely take the information given by the customer over the telephone and then, eventually, days or weeks later, read the decision off of a computer screen. They cannot explain the decision. They cannot discuss the decision in any depth and they simply pass the problem off to someone else, who then passes it off to someone else. They do not return calls for days. During evening hours, calls were returned to our day-time numbers and, during business hours, calls were returned to our home number. There was an obvious effort to avoid making contact. Since we cannot afford to accept USAA's offer, and we have told the "adjuster" and her supervisor that it is far too low, we are now being punished. We have been informed that, since we cannot accept the near-wholesale pay-off on our new car, USAA will stop paying for the rental in a few days. We will be left without a rental car, unless we rent one on our own. Also, as punishment, USAA will stop paying for storage on the car it totaled and we will have to continue storage payments ourselves, or have it transported ourselves. We will be without a car for months while we are forced to pay for an independent appraiser, pay for half the cost of an umpire to mediate, and wait for a decision. During that time, USAA will not pay for anything. USAA claims there is language in our policy that requires arbitration, but USAA never sent us a complete copy of the policy, so we have no way of knowing the truth of this statement. And, to date, USAA has not complied with our request to send us a copy of the document. We will also pay an attorney, as it is apparent that USAA will not deal with us reasonably. In the past few days, we have learned that USAA uses ADP/Autosource to provide extremely low values for automobiles and then totals its customers cars, offering extremely low payoff amounts. USAA does this to keep its own losses down and shows no concern for the damage this causes its customers. We live in an area that has a large military community. Since the accident, both of us have had conversations with other USAA customers. We have heard absolutely no favorable comments from those who have filed claims with USAA in recent years. Everyone we have spoken with says the same thing, USAA was a good company in the past, but it is not now. It appears, from our conversations, that USAA is rapidly developing a terrible reputation in the community it claims to serve. I wish we had known about USAA when we purchased the car, we would have searched for another company. We might not be much better off if we had, but things could not be much worse. My suggestion to anyone considering using USAA is simple: Don't!

Weakness:

-limited eligibility -thats all I can think of

I don't understand how there can be as many bad reviews on this site as there are. Every other site i look at they have perfect reviews, with maybe 1 complaint out of 100. J.D. Power even rates them as the best insurance company in the country. I have been using USAA for a couple years and I have no complaints. Almost all my friends use USAA, as we are all in the Army. We find they have the lowest rates compared to any other company. I have never been in an accident or had any claims, but two of my friends have been. My first friend was at fault, and they repaired his vehicle without a hassle. My other friend was not at fault, and his vehicle was totaled. They cut him a check for more than what he was expecting, and he ended up getting a little more than he stilled owed for the loan. If anyone is reading these reviews and is questioning the quality of USAA, don't. They are the best. Do a google search for reviews at other sites or check out this link http://www.jdpower.com/cc/auto/insuranceratings/FindInsuranceRatings.jsp . It is the best you will find.

POOR SERVICE PERIOD!!!!

im amazed at any good review of this company. i have been with usaa for 5 years. recently i had to file my first claim over a large dog running out in front of me. a german shepard sized dog didnt fit well under a cavalier and broke some of the fiberglass bumper on the car as well as busting a radiator. when i called usaa, they seemed caring and had me a rental the next day. they said to leave the car where it was and they would send out a claims adjuster to inspect the damage. i thought all was good. however 2 weeks pass by and no adjuster. usaa begins calling and leaving harassing messages in the first few days about why the car hasnt been taken to the body shop. so i am being harrased for them not sending the adjuster. about 3 weeks into the accident the adjuster shows up and does his assesment of the car. $1400 worth of damage. a day later i get the car sent to the body shop. usaa then calls me up and says they are going to drop the rental because its taken to long to get the car to a shop. i work 12 hours a day most of the time, so when i call usaa they are already closed for the day or try to call an extension #, that never worked. i have had family members call on my behalf to tell them that the car is in the shop and that its almost done. the response by usaa is very disrespectful to my family. the response from usaa is that without warning they drop the rental payments because they have not heard from me in 5 days. so now i get to pay for the rental plus half of the damage to the car, if in fact they even pay. 1000 dollar premiums a year amd they will complain about any money they have to pay out. these people do not care about anything but money. when it comes to needing help from them, forget about it. this is my first and last claim. usaa will be dropped. if you get a claims rep named mary e coleman, guess what? she dont care.

Cost, professional attitude of company

Weakness:

Don't break their rules, or you're gone! they know their price is good so if you violate a policy rule they will see that as grounds for revoking your policy, no matter how long you have been with them.

USAA has served me well, as far as insurance companies go, for many years. Once I had a lockout situation, I called USAA right after the locksmith, and my reimbursement check was in the mail before my car had been opened. In another more serious sitution, my girlfriend rolled my Jeep. The car was in terrible shape and was my only vehicle. Getting an estimate for repairs took a few days, and once the adjuster did his work USAA left if up to me to either have the vehicle repaired at one of their "preferred" shops, or total it. If I had totalled it I would have been out a fair amount of money, so I opted for their shop. It took this shop nearly 2 months to fix the vehicle, and I would rate their work as competent, not great. After the vehicle was repaired I drove it for 5 years with no troubles, just some wind noise from ill fitting windows. Of course the repair issues were not USAA's fault, I was mainly bothered by their cost cutting approach, but this is pretty typical of insurance companies so what the heck. After the accident I kept waiting for my premiums to go up but they never did. Overall, the price is good, the service is fine, while you are required to call for all service, they at least treat you in a very professional manner. I don't mind phone service and actually sometimes find it preferrable. But be aware, they are not really your friends, they know the price point of their product is better than others, and if you break their rules you are gone. So, if you are a person who pays bills on time, does not race your car or drive after drinking, this will be a solid company for you.

Southern accents.

I've been with USAA since I was 16. I've had two claims, both my fault, without penalty. I backed into a parked car when I was really sick and on the way to pick up a prescription. I left my name and USAA's number on a note on my neighbor's windshield. Later, I called USAA and told them what happened. A couple weeks later I ran into my neighbor and she reported that my insurance company was the best she had ever dealt with. Her car was repaired and her only complaint was that she wasn't elligible to switch her insurance to them too. Every year I compare rates, and no one else even comes close. I went through USAA for my mortgage and subsequent refinance because their rates were lower and they were more responsive. How can you beat low cost and superb service? I've never been put on hold for unreasonable amounts of time, or waited more than 24 hours for a call back. It's hard to believe these negative reviews. It's like they're talking about another company. The paranoid in me suspects jealous competitors of making up lies, but that's probably a little extreme. I use them for my mortgage, auto insurance, and home owners insurance. Before buying, I bought renters insurance from them for $17 a month. Could not more hightly recommend a company.

Great rates and customer service

I use USAA for everything (Insurance, investing, banking, checking, credit card). for the past two years I have gotten an insurance refund of about $100 or so at years end. The rates are good and the couple times I had a fender bender USAA took care of everything. In addition to great insurance, their banking and checking offer better rates (no fees, no minimum, and even interset on checking) than any other company, and actual cash back for atm purchases. In a world where most banks are giving .1% interest and monthly fees, its nice to have a bank that actually does what it should. From what I have read the only negaitve reviews are from people with DUIs, bad drivers, and this kind of thing.

Weakness:

None identified.

Insured with USAA for 8 years and response to both Homeowners and Auto Claims have been prompt courteous and fair ALso their rates are considerably lower than other insurers they don't charge $ for a monthly payment plan and they offer excellent banking and investment products with much lower fees. Interesting that most of the critical comments on this site are probably from those submitting fraudulent claims. One even notes that USAA did not pay because the driver was excluded on the policy well that's why they wrote the policy at a reduced rate & why should they write a policy on a poor risk they are running a business! YOu remedy is to file and Uninsured Motorist claim with your own carrier & they can collect from the idiot who was driving without coverage.
