I have had my home and car insured with State Farm for 10 years, and a rental property and a second car for 2 + years. I have paid more than $3000.00 per year in insurance premiums to State Farm.
Today I receive a letter informing me that the policy on my home wil not be renewed, because of my "loss history", including a theft claim (for a briefcase while travelling overseas) for which State Farm paid $174.00, and a water damage claim in February 2003, for which State Farm paid $680.00.
How is that for 1) business sense 2) customer service?
I staid with State Farm despite cheaper quotes from other companies. Now I am transferring all three remaining policies.

Rude, only out for your $$$$. No wonder they are making money hand over fist.......

My son was hit by a State Farm client on Thurs. morning -He call SF and reported since he had her info. Said they couldn't do anything until she called them. she didn't report until Saturday...car was not driveable. He missed work-no car. SF didn't care. Bent wheel-can't be replaced-no longer made..they paid for 1 wheel, not 4. SF refused to replace-didn't matter that they didn't match. Would not pay for 2 days missed from work (1 was for court)Did not pay rental full price-my son had to pay for 2 days. My son had to give Enterprise a credit card to secure car...SF had approved the rental but did not pay for last 2 days....Enterprise charged my sons card!!!! Not authorized! Was supposedly only for car security. Don't believe them! Thought when you were hit - the ins co was suppose to "make you hold"......that's bull. You talked to someone new each time, uncaring, rude, etc. DO NOT DEAL WITH STATE FARM..........

Everything bad you can think of.

Ok. So this lady rear-ended my wife's car. She had State Farm. After i raised the claim, it took 8 days for their estimators to come to my door and estimate. Another 7 days to get my check. All sorts of nonsense about my car. I sweat to God that i would have screwed the living hell out of the agents. My wife spoke to 5 agents for her claim Apparently, every other day there was someone else in-charge of the claims. They were not only rude, but un-apologetic. Hello, someone hit me, i don't even have state farm insurance. The least you can do is to win over a client with sweet talk. Now i know which insurance agent not to go to. These SOBs will never get my business. Moreover, we have just one car and one motorcycle. I don't like to go to work on my motorcycle. But, because these estimators had to come, i had to take my motorcycle and the car remained with my wife. They even said that we cannot confirm on when the estimators will come. They can only confirm 1 hour earlier. They are good at screwing people. Apparently, my car just suffered very minor damage, else i would have sued them royally.

Strength:

customer service
seems like they really care about
personal relationships
our premiums go down all the time without us knowing why cause they just apply discounts to our policy as soon as we are eligible for them.

Weakness:

are they trying to screw me over over such a small amount of money? Can I do any better with another company or am I better off staying where I am?

Chris and I are reasonably young, 24 and 23 respectively. We are married with a house and a kid, both full time students with above 3.0 GPA. So we get all sorts of discounts through State Farm Insurance. When we first got married I switched from Geico to my husband's State Farm policy that branched off from his parents--his whole family loved State Farm so much we didn't shop around. (I am all about customer service). So our whole lives niether of us have had speeding tickets or any accidents. We pay $130 for full coverage on both vehicles.

This Sunday 8/7/06 a not watching the road hits us head on. It was slow and did little damage so we didn't call the cops. Niether agency (he had American Family) could find either party at fault, so it was a "washout"-- his insurance pays his, ours pays ours. Our insurance rates don't increase. It's all good. Well we have a $500 deductible, which is fine, we expected to pay that (since no one is at fault, we have to pay our deductible and the ins covers the rest). Well then State Farm comes back the next day and says since we have a little crack in our bumper, it had "previous damage" and we would have to cover some of the cost. So he wanted to see if us paying $285 out of $1006 was fair. I didn't think so cause I think regardless of whether we have a crack, a dent, or a missing door, if someone hits us, that is what the insurance is for, right? Essentially, that would leave them paying aroun $200 out of $1000 because of our deductible (We would have to come up with the other $800). So after 2 days of fighting, they drop it to $150 and say that any other insurance company wouldn't pay on it at all. Is that true? They said that the body shop who gave us the estimate said that the crack from before warranted replacement of the bumper, so basically we are lucky that they are willing to help out at all because other companies would just throw it out. Anyone know if that is accurate?

So we had never shopped for insurance around till this week and have found Geico covers us for significantly cheaper for the same coverage. Anyone had any experiences with Geico to share with us?

I have been doing research all over the internet all week and could you trusted opinions of friends and family in deciding whether we are being screwed over or not. We like our agent, he is great. We definately pay a little more for our premiums, but is it worth it? Chris has been with State Farm for so long now that if he gets in an accident that is HIS fault, State Farm says he gets one free at-fault--they pay it, they forget it, his rates won't go up. (I asked our agent why we should stay with State Farm and that was one reason. He also sent us some gas gift cards.)

Any feedback is helpful.

Strength:

Nice ads on TV. IF your local agent will go to bat for you, being a personal friend, there is no problem.

Weakness:

Not all SF agents are my personal friend.

On vacation, my car was stolen. Another insurance co. paid for car. The Contents, however, were covered by State Farm, with which I had my Homeowners' Insurance. Poop on me. Bottom line: State Farm screwed me out of about $4700 worth of "stuff" I was carrying, none of which I have recovered. The original agent I had with State Farm was VERY helpful, years ago, on claims, but he retired. The new agent has never lifted a finger for me, is cheerful, encouraging, and does absolutely nothing. "Well, I'm in sales, not in claims." Hey, guy, YOU are getting the agent's take of my premium, help me out here. Their forms for a claim are more complicated than any US gov't form I ever had to fill out. On a technicality, they left me out in the cold, after collecting premiums from me for 20+ years.

Bought SF when I bought my house. Am now searching the market for a new insurer--reading other companies' reviews sure doesn't make me very confident.

I had State Farm taking monthly payments directly out of my checking account for automobile insurance. I later decided to switch to a less expensive carrier and canceled service with State Farm. They proceeded to take monthly payments from my checking account for four months and severely overdrew my account. After repeated telephone conversations and letters the problem was finally corrected.

I hate this company, my wife got in an auto accident and the only thing damaged on the car was the front bumper which comes off as a seperate piece. These cars sell for $5000 to $10,000. They offered us $500 and they keep the car, after some serious threats we got $1200 out of them. Makes me wonder what would happen if my house burned down? Don't use them!!!!!!

Unbelievably unethical

My car was parked, when a State Farm insured hit it with a moving van. To his credit, he came and and found me. He admitted total responsibility, as did State Farm when they first called me. Now, the adjuster says there was "pre-existing damage", and they won't pay the full amount to fix my car. The thing is, the guy totally destroyed my bumper, which is one piece. It can't be fixed, it has to be replaced. When they replace it, they'll fix the dent. But SF is deducting $790 from the repair estimate because "that's what it would have cost to fix the damage you already have". I told them I don't want the pre-existing damage fixed, and if it's cheaper for them to leave it in place and have the shop splice in a new bumper piece, I'm all for it. No luck with these people. They're really slimy.

I'll be filing a complaint with the Department of Insurance. Of course, SF is also paying for a rental car for me. I called my body shop and told them to make my car last priority. I'll drive their rental car for 2 months.

They make you feel they actually care about you and your family.

Weakness:

All they care about is your money!!!!

I was in an accident over 2 years ago. I had State Farm and so did the other person that hit me. The man that hit me pulled out of his friend’s driveway, in his friend’s car and plowed into me and my daughter. My car is a big car and there was not a lot of body damage to the car. My daughter hit her knee on the glove box and now has to have surgery on her knee. I injured my shoulder. State farm will not pay a thing. And then told me that if we go to court they will make me pay all their fees as well as the cost of court. They are horribly. They don’t care about you. All they care about is the money. They are not “like a good neighbor”. They use false advertisements to make you think you are getting the best service. When really you are not being protected at all. Do not use this insurance. They will not be there for you when you need them!!!!!

Strength:

None that I have found so far

Weakness:

Poor claims practices, obvious lack of regard for individuals unfortunate enough to have been hit by one of their insureds.

I was hit from behind by an individual who was blatently not paying attention. Accident totaled by 1999 Honda motorcycle and caused me serious personal injuries. State Farm and I after 6 months finally agreed upon a price for my total loss vehicle. They sent me the settlement check and then stopped payment on the check. Multiple phone calls later has finally resulted in them saying they don't know why they stopped payment on the settlement check, sorry their mistake. They have now issued another draft which will result in another 10 day hold by the bank plus another 10 days after than to make sure this second draft is good. All in all I'm still out my motorcycle and won't be able to replace it any time soon because of their fraudulent claims practices.
