They pulled the old bait and switch on me. I signed up and one month later my rate was raised $400. Now I have lost my multiple year discount at my old carrier. They suck. |

Mercury's weaknesses just about cover the waterfront. I've had Mercury Insurance for the last 7 years. I haven't needed them until recently. THEY HAVE BEEN TOTALLY UNETHICAL IN EVERY WAY. I've gone up the latter trying to get to someone who will listen to me and still haven't found a single person who will deal with my claim honestly. What makes it even more painful is that I had a major operation right after I was rear-ended and had to be in the hospital for over a month. I told Mercury that my car didn't drive properly after the accident and they ignored me. The problem was so bad that I didn't feel safe driving the car. I took it to one inspection place after another at my own expense until I found one that located the problem. But after all of this time and money, Mercury is still refusing to accept that the problem with my car was the result of the accident! I've read the reviews on this website and see that I am not alone in suffering at the hands of this corrupt company. Is there a class action suit anywhere??? Similar Products Used: 20th Century |

No customer service, I have had auto insurance with Mercury for several years with no claims no accidents or vehicle violations and yet I just received a check and my insurance was cancelled with no apparent reason. I am notifying our insurance commissioner in GA No one should try this insurance company and after reading the other negative reviews wish I had read them earlier and saved my time and money with this negative company! Weakness:
No representation or service when it counts I have been insured by Mercury for almost 20 years. They've always been good about giving me excellent rates and taking my money. As soon as I needed them for an incident totally the other driver's fault per the police report, I was left on my own to handle compensation issues. I am now hunting for another company to take my money. |

If you don't have 10 minutes to gather some documentation and don't have the patients to review your situation with your agent(as everyone's is different) then Mercury probably is not the company for you. I am a Mercury agent in Virginia and have sold my fair share of policies to clients our agency has had for years as well as client who just walked in the door. Over all Mercury is a great company. I feel obligated to respond to some of the issues many have posted here, most of which all revolve around two discounts: Prior insurance and the number of vehicles in the household. Mercury offers a discount that most companies do not. True most provide a discount for being insured for six months with out a lapse but Mercury goes a step further. If you have been insured for the past two years, or three or however many with out a lapse in coverage Mercury gives a discount. A huge discount. The catch: you have to prove it, other wise everyone would say they have been insured for the past five years. It's easy to prove. All you need is a declerations page from when your policy first started and one showing when it ended. That shows coverages, effective dates and drivers. How do you get this if you don't keep records? Call your old agent. If that does't work call your old company directly, they normally can fax it to you that day. A letter of persistancy works too (letter from your old carrier stating who was insured, coverages and when the policy started and ended). Why do they care how long you have been insured? The same reason most companies use credit in factoring your premium, pull a claims report and review your driving record. It is all part of the puzzle that helps Mercury undersand the risk they are taking on. Some people also find their premium increasing after the phone report. The phone report is intended to verify everything that you told me (the agent) when completing the application. On every application it asks if Mercury insures all of the vehicles in the household. A very simple question that some people do not fully understand. Not how many you own, not how many you drive most of the time. How many are in the household. That includes your son's car, your brothers car, your roomate's car, your parents car, that's any car that is owned, operated or regularly used my anyone who lives in your household. Regardless if the vehicle is insured through another company or not. Why does Mercury care? Because their is a good chance that some night when your watching your favorite show on T.V. and the pick up dinner is ready to be picked up and you blocked in your son/sister/parent/roomate that your going to say the keys are on the table, take my car. Or your girlfriend, who is insured through another company but lives with you, well her car is in the shop getting new tires and you have two cars. You can't drive both at the same time and she has to get to work some how. Yea, your going to let her take your extra car. I would, most people would. My point is, that Mercury as all insurance companies asess risk and calculate a premium from that risk. Mercury goes a little bit further than some companies to determine where and what that risk is, and in doing so are able to offer great rates. This company has no strengths, other the ability to utterly piss off the people who try to get issues resolved with them.
Weakness:
Poor customer service. Extremely poor. One of Mercury's insureds make a left turn in front of my husband, causing an accident. The police report showed what was obvious... Mercury's insured was responsible. The claims adjustor, Marit Terry - Sacramento, has her phone going right into voicemail. Then she goes on vacation. Never returns husband's call at times when he is in the office. Leaves office before my husband can get home to return her call. After being left on hold for 15 minutes, I spoke Marit. She refuses to visit the accident site by stating "it's not her job." If she were to view the site of the accident, she would know that my husband had the right of way. It's been close to 3 weeks since the accident, and she has yet to obtain a taped deposition from her insured! By this time, his memory could be quite clouded by the events of his mistake. |

As a Mercury Insurance Agent I think it is only fair to post a rebuttal to many of these arguments. In regards to the increases in premiums, most agents do a poor job at explaining what Mercury’s procedures are in underwriting a policy and what you the insured’s responsibilities are. First off, Mercury offers a substantially large discount for having prior insurance up to 5 years. Mercury (or your agent) can not get proof from your previous carrier; most companies will not give this type of personal info out except to you. Have them fax it directly to you and personally hand it to your agent, Mercury must have this info within 2 weeks or your policy will be up rated and once the first bill is generated it cannot be changed, also if you have had more claims in the last 5 years then vehicles on your policy you WILL NOT get this discount. Second, accidents; Mercury runs what is called a CLUE report; this is somewhat similar to a credit report for accidents, not all companies fully complete this information and when Mercury views the report many times it just lists an accident, you must them provide proof of non fault. The company can only go off of what it sees on paper. Third, Mercury has 2 programs, one for Prop 103 good drivers (Mercury Insurance Company) and on for non Prop 103 good drivers (Mercury Causality Company). If you do not provide proof of an accident being non fault or non injury you will be placed in Mercury Casualty which has higher rates. Many of Mercury’s agents and brokers are very competent and some are not. Hopefully this information will help someone who meets one of the not so competent. As far a claims go, Mercury’s claims practices are fair, maybe not the best but if you search for a good agent he or she will be able to assist you in making it a better experience. Mercury does have preferred claims shops that do work cheaper for Mercury. They are in their right to do so just as a car dealer is within their rights to negotiate different deals with different customers on the same cars. Remember one thing Mercury spends a great deal of recourses on underwriting policies. They will find everything. Be thorough and honest with your agent and it will save you from a nasty surprise. Strength:
Their strengths are finding reasons to raise your rates. It seems the more you call to complain about something that they have done in error, the harder they try to find another reason your rates should be higher. It's an endless circle.
Weakness:
We believe Mercury has a major filing and stupidity problem. When we requested a letter stating my husband has been a member 5 years on the letter it said my husband was in an accident and he was at fault. The comments were the most interesting which stated "the insured was struck by the other motorist which moved into his lane". You would think the underwriter assistant who wrote that letter would have used common sense before sending us that letter. Instead the letter was sent which resulted in us complaining and wasting our time to resolve the letter...which was not correct because the accident is still in arbitration and no one has yet been found at fault, let alone the comments in the letter are completely contridictory to the statement stating he was at fault. Another error was we received a letter stating my husband was found at fault for rear ending a driver(this letter was sent prior to receiving the 5 year letter). Which I stated above, he was struck on the side of his vehicle. We have had other issues, too many to write in this little space. But our largest concern is what is in our customer file. They have filing problems and can't get facts straight. My husband and I both had mercury ins. before getting married and had no problems. My husband was in an accident a month before we got married(not his fault), which is still in arbitration 9 months later. We had no problems until we got our own plan as husband and wife and broke off our parents plans. We got a quote, paid our initial dues, then 2 weeks before our first payment was due they said my husband hasn't been a member for 5 years. So they jacked up the rates. We paid, but complained. They said we can get a credit if we get proof...so we had to write to Mercury to get a letter to send to Mercury stating he has been a member 5 years(ridiculous). We sent in the letter(which also had major problems) and now expect a credit for our next payment. Well, now 2 weeks before our next payment is due they tell us we get no credit because now we owe even more. We have had enough. We have only been members as husband and wife for 5 months and have found ourselves completely frustrated with every dealing we have with Mercury. Their quotes are completely useless, which in my opinion should be illegal. Similar Products Used: Farmers - great company...rates too high |
