ON NOVEMBER 30,2002 MY SON WAS INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT IN MY CAR. HE WAS NOT AT FAULT NOR DID HE LIVE IN MY HOME, I GAVE HIM PERMISSION TO USE MY CAR. I SUBMITTED MY CLAIM WITH AMERICAN FAMILY INSURANC, AND MY CLAIM WAS DENIED. AM FAM INS. SAY'S MY SON WAS AN EXCLUDED DRIVER, THE PAPER WORK THEY HAVE HIM EXCLUDED FROM IS FOR A TOYOTA ECHO, NOT A 2003 TOYOTA COROLLA. SO I AM LEFT PAYING FOR A CAR THAT IS COMPLETLY A TOTAL LOSS FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS. PLEASE IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE E-MAIL ME. IT IS NOT FAIR TO THE CUSTOMERS WHO PAY FULL COVERAGE FOR INS. AND GET NO HELP. BUT AMERICAN FAMILY INS. IS SURE THERE TO GET PAID MONTHLY FROM CUSTOMERS. AGAIN MY SON WAS NOT AT FAULT NOR WAS HE CITED, I HAVE ALL MY DOCUMENTS BUT THE CLAIMS ADJUSTER DID NOT REQUEST THEM. THEY WOULD NOT EVEN REIMBURSE ME FOR MY TOWING EXPENSE AND I PAY EXTRA MONTHLY FOR THAT. PLEASE HELP!!!

Strength:

None in my opinion except for luring you in with a bunch of lies and a lower rate. I guess you get want you pay for.

Weakness:

Paying claims.

I had my first and only claim in Sept 2002 which was a burglary at my home. The police caught two of the men and they were convicted and sentenced in a court of law. The adjuster did not come out to take picture even though I suggested it. She said that it would not be necessary but my claim still has not been settled and it has been 7 months later. They use delay tactics not to pay you such as they had an investigator going over my claim who left the company abruptly and then another who said he concluded his investigation after about a week or two. I was expecting my claim check after the investigation and was told it would be cut in about a week,that was a month ago. Now they are saying that we the many receipts that I submitted they have to call on each receipt that is riduculous. We were almost cleaned out by the burglary and the only assistance received is that Amer repaired the entry doors that were broken. These people do not return calls and do not keep their word regarding payment of claims. This is on of the absolute worst experiences that I have had dealing with a so called AAA rated company. In our opinion this company is over rated and we would reccommend anyone who is used to good service to steer way clear of this deceitful, lying, non claim paying company. We have replacement insurance and they want to give us depreciated value on our things. It is going into a another month and our claim which is clear cut in my opinion is still not paid. I will be dropping this company as soon as my claim is paid or after I sue them in court. Do not waste your money go with a reputable insurance company.

Strength:

Good car rates. A good agent can make or break your opinion of a company. There are lots of ways to write a policy, & a good agent will provide you with what you need.

Weakness:

The adjuster wanted to penalize us for 'bad' tires - only a year old, & the penalty was more than we paid for the tires!!

We are fortunate to have a great agent, Jim Lewis & wife Chris. The rates are very reasonable, & he's always been very up front with us. Our daughter recently totaled her car, & we went back & forth A LOT with the adjuster. It took about 6 weeks to come to an agreement, & we weren't 100% OK with it, but it was very close to what we wanted. Once an accident occurs, it is you vs. the company, not the agent. It is YOUR accident, & YOUR responsibility to stay on top of things; follow the process closely. We emailed the adjuster or claims dept several times a week, & called when we had a difference of opinion.

More concerned with the almighty dollar than customer service. Limited offices.Inexperienced staff.

This company tried to hire me in their Appleton, WI location. Their claims manager was who I spoke with was clearly not concerned with customer service but his profits. I have solid experience in claims and he gave me a low ball offer to take the job. They way they calculate how to pay claims is not on an individual basis but a mathmatical formula. He refused to tender a reasonable offer and I declined the position. I heard later he was trying to hire claims examiners with no experience, undoubtedly because they are too cheap to bring in experienced people who would do a better job. If you are insured with them, watch out! If you are hit by one of their insureds, good luck!

This company is a joke. Their insured hit three other cars including mine and did not make good on any of the claimes. Arrogant and deceitful company.I want my car fixed!

This company failed to file my SR-22 when I first purchased my policy in December of 2001. I have been driving on a suspended license since 2/2002. I was notified by the agent that my license was suspended and I found out from DMV it was suspended because of lack of insurance. A simple matter of faxing an SR-22 has not been completed for 4 days. I am still waiting for this to be done as I don't have the funds to purchase new insurance at this time. I paid 6 months in advance and have 4 months left at this time. I can't drive my car legally and have to take the bus or a cab. Do not use this company.

I was hit by a guy that carried American Family Insurance and what a joke this is turning out to be. These people claim they want to get this handled. I was rear-ended,my collectors car was totalled, and it was the other guy's fault...totally. . It has been 2 months now, and I haven't even got a rental from these yahoos. They claim they will call you and that doesn't even happen. They claim an offer will be made within 24 hours, and that sure doesn't happen. The only thing I can see these people good at is lies. For those of you who may be having the same type of problems with American Family Insurance, most all states have a Insurance Commission that you can file complaints with.

I would never reccomend this insurance company to anyone. I had two dwellings and two vehicles insured by them. From the very begining I had trouble. The agent wanted to insure my dwellings for half of what they estimated the replacement cost would be. She also tried to sell us a policy that only covered riots,plane crashing into dwelling, and a myriad of highly unlikely situations. I insisted we have full coverage and had to contact the main office to get it. Our agent was so inept and unorganized that each time I had to make policy changes it was difficult. The last straw was when I sold one of the dwellings that was insured. I spent close to three hours filling out forms while the agent tried to figure what my payments would be. Plus it was time to renew. She then told me I''d have to come back. I gave up and went to another company. Then I recieved a collection notice for only one of the vehicles I had insured? Since I had insurance by another company I ignored it. No it''s on my credit report for non payment. These people are rediculous! Stay away!

Claim service is not interested in helping solve a claim. They make it as hard and complicated as possible.

The price may be right, and the agents may be friendly, but watch out if you ever have a claim. The claims adjuster in Scottsdale Arizona has made a simple fender bender claim into one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. It has taken six months for a simple, straight forward, $1700 claim, and we still have no resolution. He has used the flimsiest of excuses to avoid paying this claim. His latest trick was to set up a release form for the out of pocket expenses resulting from a minor back injury in the collision. All we wanted was the money to pay the clinic, the prescriptions, and time off of work. The letter he sent with the release mentioned only the medical expenses, but the actual form included all property and any other damages. Signing it would have released them from the resposibility of fixing my car! Their web site says "fast, fair, and friendly" claim service. I have found them to be slow, sneaky, and rude.
