Strength:

Excellent rates, great options for insurance premium reductions for having various forms of insurance or multi-vehicles.

Weakness:

Aside from a little confusion with faxing the agent the quotes for repair, I have thus far experieced very little problems.

I had recently switched over from Progressive to American Family Insurance, and my premiums nearly cut in half for the same coverage. The agent was a pleasure to work with, and they have been extremely easy to work with. My fiance has had American Family for her vehicle for the past several years, and it was my shear laziness that made me hesitate to call them and get a quote. As for a claim situation, her car was broken into in the parking lot, and some cd's and the cd player were both stolen. All we had to do was get a quote from an installation place (Best Buy) and the auto shop, and two weeks later we recieved a check in the mail for the full repar and replacement costs minus the $100 deductable.

Strength:

Smooth claims handling

Weakness:

I see none

I have American Family Insurance. Someone hit my car in a parking lot & left. Called agent, claim adjuster called me and everything went smooth. Sure I had to pay the deductible but thats the deal right? Eveyone thinks the deductible is optional but I understand the process.

Strength:

Wonderful benefits and discounts from local businesses. Comparable pay, (not great, but definitely competitive).

Weakness:

Lack of concern for emotional well being of their customers and employees alike. Driven by the all mighty dollar. Biased and sometimes racially charged when making decisions on claims for accidents and/or home claims. Bad attitudes, not up to date on changes to the industry nor do they care (agents).

I work for American Family and yes I agree that a consumer can go to the district manager of an agent they are having problems with. But that sometimes doesn't work! The agents are rarely up to date on changes to the industry, not aware of how to direct their customers and continually bad mouth the "grunts" that fix all of their problems for them. They are only concerned about their commissions. I'm sure there are a few out there that are honest and intelligent, but for the most part in my experience, the majority of agents do not care about anything but their paychecks. This seems to be the norm in all aspects of this company. If you have a problem with a manager it clearly states you are able to contact Human Resources without fear of retaliation. Their Human Resources department, executives in the home office (Madison, WI) and local managers of the claims offices, do not care about their employees. Managers fraternize with employees, and then allow special circumstances for their friends. They keep us extremely short staffed, so their profit at the end of the year is not affected by overheard for the amount of employees really needed to run the offices smoothly and efficiently. This in turn causes consumers to have to wait unnecessarily for their payments, assistance or inspections to their homes/vehicles. Not to mention keeping the morale so low in the office does not allow claims adjustors and inspectors to stay in good spirits; I've seen many nice people become jaded in regards to the industry we work in because how we're treated. We are not allowed to take vacation, and even get a hard time when having to ask off for doctor's appointments or being verifiably sick. I have experienced this myself as well as witnessed it happening to other co-workers; yet we accrue personal time and sick time as well as our obligatory vacation time, I guess it's just for show and upper management never thought we'd actually need to use it! While we are chastised and treated badly for being 3 minutes late due to a major traffic jam in the morning, the managers float in whenever they want, leave whenever they want. We are asked to take on two and sometimes three times the amount of work with no positive reinforcement and I'm not just talking monetary gifts, a smile or a pat on the back sometimes helps situations. I can't stand working here, yet I am stuck because of an insurance issue; I have a child that needs major healthcare, I'm afraid to leave since I will lose the benefits. You know it's bad when an employee that has awesome benefits and pretty decent comparable pay starts looking wistfully at McDonald's with the thought that at least there is no bull%^&*. No crazy changes day to day; all I'd have to worry about would be making burgers. Again, I see degeneration in all departments. How can people expect outstanding service when we are treated so horribly and without regard. And then those that do make the big bucks, don't really care unless the big bucks are still rolling in. I have cancelled my home and vehicle policies with American Family, I can't wait to cancel my employment here as well!

Local Agent, Service, Price, Got my $250.00 back.

Weakness:

Policy is incredibly boring to read and not always in layman's terms.

I have had both auto and homeowners insurance with American Family for 3 years. I like having a local agent as opposed to no agent via the net. I was hit by an moron with no insurance while on vacation. Called my agent and he got everything rolling ASAP. The adjuster called me on my cell ph the following morning. I explained that the car was driveable and I wanted to wait until I got home for repairs to start. He left me a ph number and gave me his email when I asked for it. 4 days later when I got home I called and went to a body shop that was part of some program they have. I was hesitant, but since I know nothing about body work I figured what the heck. It turned out great no estimates for me to run around and get and then mail in. The shop was paid direct by the adjuster. I left my $250.00 deductible with the shop assuming I would never see it again. My only problem was I had to pay some depreciation on the muffler. About a month later I received a letter from their subrogation dept (whatever that is) telling me they were going to going after the guy who hit me and they would try to get my $250 back. I was thinking about suing the guy for it but it really wasn't worth the hassle to pay the court costs and miss time from work. It took almost a year but they sent back my deductible to me. They tracked the loser down and got him to pay up. For all the people complaining about this company or any other insurance company, the best advise I can give you is to ask quastions and read your policy. It's a contract and to think that they will pay you for anything and everything is naive. When I asked about the muffler depreciation the adjuster explained it to me and told me where in the policy this issue was addressed. Sure, I wasn't too happy to fork over another $42.00 but once I read the policy I knew there was nothing I could do about it. I never read it before buying the policy, but once I did I learned that some things just aren't covered. I also learned that the deductible is applied no matter who is at-fault. My agent says the deductible is used to lower the premiums a little because the policyholder assumes that portion of the risk of having an accident. I checked with other companies and found that all their policies are the same. Take the time to know what you are dealing with. After reading the policy I am coinfident that if I have trouble with an adjuster in the future that I will be prepared to handle it.

Friendly when you sign up. They are lucky we can't assign 0 stars.

Weakness:

Don't know how to do math, produce bills, keep sending bills month after insurance is cancelled, and it took forever to get a refund.

American Family insurance is the worst company out there. 75% of the premium statements I received were wrong, I would call and request a new one and they would only tell me the rate verbally but would not issue a new statement. It was fun to call the office at different times of the day and get different people telling me what my bill should really be. Always conflicting stories. Home owners insurance they consistently screwed up and would never pay my mortgage company as they were instructed. Rude staff. When I left I found insurance elsewhere for half the price and the service is perfect!! Sent multiple complaints to customer service and was never contacted. Issues were never resolved. Leaving was the decision I have ever made, insurance doesn't have to be such a hassle. 0 stars!!

NOTHING. Too bad they cannot get 0 stars. They may have low rates, but pay more for the peace of mind elsewhere.

Weakness:

Everyone you talk to does not care to deal with your situation and they lie to you. Other employees of the corporation try to make you out to be a lier.

American Family is absolutely terrible as an insurance company. I have had them for eight years and they are really nice to you when you are sending in a payment, but try to get assistance when you make a claim. I had concrete dropped on my car and it caused extensive damage to the paint and glass. I filed a claim with American Family and ever since I have regretted my decision. They gave me two body shops where I could get my car fixed. I chose the one closest to me because I had heard bad things about the other one. I had the car painted and on the estimate it says the car was in excellent condition when it was dropped off at the body shop. It took the body shop almost two weeks to paint the car and when I brought the car home and everything looked fine, but less than one month later the paint started coming off the side of the car. I talked to the body shop and they said it was not covered by the warranty. I then talked to American Family. American Family told me my car was in poor condition before work was even done and the paint was peeling and that I was lucky to have the work done to the car. Well eventually I met with a number of representatives of the body shop and American Family and they refused to fix a number of problems on the car and the problems that they would fix, they stated that they would not warranty them unless I paid for additional work to be done to the car. This led me to file a lawsuit against American Family for there actions. It is severely disappointing when you have to sue your own insurance company.

Lie, lie and more lies, just to get you off the phone. It has been over a month since our accident. I have never talked to our agent. He is always" busy". hmmmm doing what???

American Family Insurance: They suck. My experience. They NEVER call you back. My car was in the shop for 10 days BEFORE the adjuster would say to fix it. They are confused and they LIE to cover up their own weaknesses. It is no doubt that they put PROFIT before any customer. DONT BUY FROM THEM.

They dont pay claims, they lie, they are manipulating ,

American Family is a joke. I was in a accident in August of this year. I was not cited but their driver was. At first they sent me the paperwork explaining they were going to pick up 100%. Then 2 weeks later they wanted to change that to 75% for them and I pay 25%. I declined saying I was not ticketed so I am not responsible. Then 2 weeks later I get a letter stating their investigation reveals that their client is not negligent therefore they are not paying anything. He was ticketed for failure to yield right of way. Now I am pursuing the matter with an attorney to see what can be done but this company is a lying, cheating, deceitful company and tell everyone do not get insurance from them they dont pay their claims. This company should be investigated throughly by the state insurance boards because they are crooks.

Not taking care of the customer

Just 3wks ago I was driving and a truck beside me thru upa huge rock and some small. Put about 3 scratches & a huge dent in my fender, also putting rock chips in my hood. The guy pulled over and he gave me his insurance info. Well my problem is this: American Family says my deductable applies ($500.) out of my pocket for something I DID NOT DO. Nor do I have that kind of money laying around. American Family adjuster told me there is nothing they can do to recoup my money I'm out, even though I have a note stating the other vehicle caused damage to my car. I think this all stinks because I'm forced to pay out of my pocket for something I did not do!!!!!, and they are not one bit worried about filing a claim towards the other insurance company and backing me up!!!

everything

my father and friend are insured by american family. My dad's car was stolen. It took american family 2 weeks to respond to the claim! And since the vehicle was under someone's else's name they have taken over a month to investigate! Even when my dad gave them the title and everything! My dad couldn't change the vehicle to his name because the car was not totally paid for until a few months before it was stolen. Also my friend was hit by an uninsured motorists, it was not her fault she paid her $500 deductible. They said they would reimburse her since it was not her fault. They would get the $500 from the guy who hit her and repay her. It took them almost 2 months to repay her. American Family is not good. Don't buy insurance from them. 4500
