It is little wonder that American Family is losing market share rapidly to reputable providers like Progressive. Hopefully bankruptcy will find them in the near future.

Terribly unhelpful. Told that American Family does not cover, under full coverage, damage done from huge ice sheets, rocks, etc flying off the back of other vehicles. Although it nearly caused me to lose control, damaged my windshield severly, and put other drivers in danger, American Family absolutely refused to take any action whatsoever.

I really like American Family. I have been with them for 3 years. I recently just got into my first accident this weekend. It was the other persons fault and she took liability 100%. She is also with the same insurance company. Anyway, I took my van in today and they are fixing it and they let me have a rental. A 2007 mazda. They are paying for everything and they worked so quickly! They were also friendly and helpful. Thanks American Family.

I do not know how people put up with it.

My daughter was hit by one of their insureds. It took them three weeks to answer my claim. The damage was $2200 to $2500 to repair. They offered me $200 and then immediately took my rental away when I refused. What a terrible company. I will turn it over to my company and they can deal with it.

Avoid American Family, they deny claim. They used to be a great company, around 5 years ago I would've said they were the best. Now however they are denying almost all claims, large or small. Had them for around 10 years, currently looking elsewhere. My broker used to say they had terrible losses in the stock market, then used the Katrina hurricane excuse... whatever, not my problem. My sympathies to those currently "insured" by American Family.

Horrible billing system. Confusing and in-consistent. They always seem to be behind the other large companies in implamentation of programs. Rates are not that great and nearly every agent I have ever met is unhappy with their job and the company.

Well, I see that there are some very mixed reviews on American Family on this website, but I can tell you that my experience with them has always been pleasent. A few years ago I hit a GIANT pot hole in the road, only going 10mph but it still managed to cause a GREAT deal of damage, over $1,000 worth to be exact. They were right on top of it. We called, our agent told me where I could take my car (at the time I was in college and wasn't familiar with local mechanics) and what to do after that. They paid for a rental car for me while I was without vehicle, the towing of my car to the mechanics and there was absolutly no hassle at all. The car I was driving at that time was a piece of crap, and I'm sure most insurance agents would encourage me to just get a new and better one considering the damage to the underside of my car almost distroyed it (I tore my oil pan off, bent the wheel shaft so my car couldn't drive straight), but not them. They realized that I was in college and that it was important for me to not have to worry about finding a more expensive car while I was already paying such an expense for school.

Another great story, my dad hit my fiance's car once while backing out of our drivway. The damage to my fiance's car was not noticable, but dad's car was HORRIBLE. My mom called, they gave her areas where we could go and within three days the car was fixed, payed for and looked perfect. Just another example of how accomidating American Family has been for us.

Now my fiance and I have moved and I was happy to find an American Family agent near me. They gave me the lowest quotes out of all the places we looked at and have been extremely helpful and accomidating in the entire process.

I would recommend American Family to anyone, although I understand that if you've had a bad experience you not likely to go back to the same company. If you ever move away though and are looking for new insurance, I would try them... maybe it was just in your area, you never know, but all I know is that they have always been wonderful for me and my family.

I had recently switched over from Progressive to American Family Insurance, and my premiums nearly cut in half for the same coverage. The agent was a pleasure to work with, and they have been extremely easy to work with.

My fiance has had American Family Insurance for her vehicle for the past several years, and it was my shear laziness that made me hesitate to call them and get a quote.
As for a claim situation, her car was broken into in the parking lot, and some cd's and the cd player were both stolen. All we had to do was get a quote from an installation place (Best Buy) and the auto shop, and two weeks later we recieved a check in the mail for the full repar and replacement costs minus the $100 deductable.

American Family is one of the worst companies I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. We switched from a great insurance company to them because their prices were cheaper. Well, you get what you pay for because they are horrible. They took a MONTH to get me my insurance card in the first place after claiming that they sent it 3 times. After I called them and spoke to them for a while, I got my card a week later. That tells me they never BOTHERED to send it. Next, they try to over charge us by $50 claiming that it was correct. Then, when I needed to get my wind shield replaced, which was $246 from the company, they tried to make me pay a $250 deductable. I went around the insurance and just paid the company. My advice? STAY AWAY!

Unbelievably bad on large claims.

6 years ago I was hit by an uninsured motorist. I have had constant pain and spent over $60,000 on treatments, doctors, and drugs. I have permanent damage, the pain never goes away. I have had American Family Insurance for over 30 years for my house and car. I have had no problems with them on small claims in the past, in fact they were great, but when I really needed them to come through on the uninsured motorist claim they put me through so much hell, going to their doctors, taking tests, meeting with their lawyers, for so long (6 years)that I finally gave up. I couldn't deal with the added stress of taking them to court. I ended up with a check for only $14,000. So if you want an insurance company for minor claims ONLY, American Family Insurance is the company for you. However, if you are like me, and really have insurance coverage because of the possibility of a major problem, be fore-warned, they will spend thousands of dollars on unethical doctors and lawyers, and put you through hell to get out of any major claims.

Simply terrible, i dont know how many months in a row they didnt get my premium rates correct.... they'd tell me one ammount and then call the next day and tell me another. They couldnt get automatic deduction from my checking account correct. They over billed my checking account, when they told me they really had no way to get 100$ overcharge back to me in a timely manner, i called the corporate office. they said the only way they knew was to dispute it with my bank. so i did that the dispute and i canceled my coverage. in addition to that, when i inquired why i was over charged with teh Brian Harvey AMFAM office in Beaverton Oregon, they didnt return my call, i had to call back and talk to them, and which point i was told i was being rude and was hung up on. when i tried calling back they wouldnt answer the phone. simpy terrible I have since moved to State Farm, havnt had to worry about a thing. I can say i am sure i didnt have to make a claim in the 3 years i was with AMFAM - Brian Harvey
