Strength:

Fairly easy repair process after accident. Excellent repair shop selection, fast and excellent quality work.

Weakness:

Agents don't support their clients, claims adjusters make decisions not based upon ALL information and will sell you up the river to close out the claim.

They're a great company as long as you don't file a claim. I was insured by them for over 6 years, never had a claim. Then had an accident where the CHP could not, did not, attribute fault to any of the THREE drivers involved. However, Allstate in its infinite wisdom determined that the only drivers at fault were those who made contact and totally disregarded the third vehicle (and the contributing cause) in the incident. To avoid legal arbitration they assigned 80% fault to me and the remainder to the vehicle that hit me while I was at a complete stop due to its uncontrolled skid.
My recommendation, keep a running video camera covering all angles of your vehicle at all times in the event of an accident. That way the adjusters just "might" accept your version of the incident over that of the other party (no matter how many times the other parties contradict themselves).

Strength:

Acceptable rates, fixed comprehensive claims with little fuss

Weakness:

Don't get hit by another Allstate insured car, still fighting to get an accident claim finished more that 3-1/2 years now

The insurance in Fairfax is comparable to most (I'll be switching to State Farm when my current insurance term is over). My wife got into an accident (not her fault...in fact, the police officer didn't even need her at the hearing because it was clearly the other driver's fault) more than 3-1/2 years ago. We made few claims (my wife - pregnant at the time - got one bruise and my son got several bruises...my mother-in-law had to have some minor surgery) including the destroyed groceries in the back. The paid up for the car after over 30 days had passed (it was totalled). The other driver also had Allstate...I hired a lawyer for that reason, and because my wife was pregnant and didn't need the stress. About 2 months ago, she had to do a deposition with Allstate's lawyer while he grilled her about every little item on the grocery list. That was the last straw for me. I will no longer support a company that fights over such open and shut cases. They may have good rates in some places, but heaven forbid you get in an accident...this is not a company that will be on your side.

Strength:

Once I finally got an agent to call me back, they were fairly prompt and returned phone calls.

Weakness:

They will undervalue your car.

My wife was rear-ended by a policy holder from AllState.

At first, the other driver didn't know if she was insured at all.

During this time, we got our car estimated from our company, State Farm Insurance and they gave me a $4130 estimate for the value of the car. I had an uninsured motorist policy up to $3500 and they would have given me a check for that EXCEPT that that had recently discovered that the other driver did have insurance with AllState.

So, I had to get the car estimated with AllState. That agent was nice. He told me I should expect a call within 48 hours from a claims adjuster.

Well, no call came. I waited 2 weeks, then called the original AllState agent back. He never returned my calls for help until I left him a message threating to get a lawyer or file a complaint with the California State Insurance Commisonner. Funny, I got a call back in 2 minutes! He was very helpful then. He got me connected to the claims adjuster fairly quickly.

The claims adjuster was much better but ended up offering my $2900 for the car, including a $700 salvage fee (which never came up at State Farm). My State Farm claims adjuster said we were getting "low balled" by AllState. I took the offer because I didn't have the patience to go to court for $1000 dollars.

Strength:

Quick resolution of claims and decent rates for the area I live in.

Weakness:

Responsiveness (or lack thereof) of agents when asking minor questions like rate quotes for different vehicles. Could use more of this same information online.

I have been with Allstate for the past 9 years and have had a few claims during that time. But during each claim, they were fast and very thorough in their resolution. I did manage to get quite a few discounts even without homeowners insurance.

However, when you are car shopping or have some minor questions, I have found that the agents do not return your calls or seem to be disinterested in addressing those minor issues. Personally, I find it annoying to be blown off when you need data like that in order to make a car purchase decision.

I never had Allstate insurance but have been hit by two drivers with Allstate. The first incident was when I was in a parking lot. I was stopped at the exit waiting for traffic to clear up so I can exit. A car made an illegal left turn over double-double solid yellow lines and ran right into the front of my car. We called the police and they would not take a report since it was an accident that occured on private property. I asked if the turn she made was illegal and the officer said that it is and they give citations for people making that same turn all the time. I thought oh well, just call the insurance company and get it resolved. A week later their insurance agent(Allstate) called me and asked me how I would like to pay for their clients damage. I told her that their client made an illegal left turn into me and that I was completely stopped before and during the whole thing! She said that she believes it was my fault and that I need to pay. I became angry and told her that she needs to contact my insurance to discuss how thay are going to pay for my damage. She said that Allstate will sue me if I do not pay for their clients damage. I told her she can go F*ck herself and then she called me a f*cking as*hole. Wow! Although I got mad and cursed, she is representing a multimillion dollar company. I guess their logo should say 'Allstate, your are in good f*cking hands'.

The second time I experienced Allstate was when I was rear ended on the freeway by a driver that said 'she was looking at the other lane' when she hit me. The police came out and took a report, ticketed the other driver and had to tow both cars since they were un-driveable. After making a claim with my insurance company (Mercury) and getting a rental car that was 'approximately' equal to my own (which in California you have the right to get an equal valued rental car to the one that was damaged). I was told a week later by Allstate that they are not paying for my rental. They will only pay for the minimum rate which is on their clients policy. I told them that by law, I am not bound by their clients policy since I did not sign their policy. They said that it did not matter. I told them that I will get the cheaper car just to move things along but they need to pay for the week that I had the other car. They told me no. I told them that they are responsible for the cost and that I would sue them for the cost. The Allstate agent said to go ahead because it will cost me more time than it's worth. Luckily Enterprise rent a car credited me back the difference and did not charge me anything (I will always give them my business for that reason. Great customer service)! At that point, I retained a lawyer. The attorney sighed and said 'here we go again' when he saw that Allstate was the other persons insurance. He stated that Allstate likes to play 'games' even when their client is 100% at fault. To make a long story a little shorter than how long it already is, I ended up settling three and a half years later. What is funny is that I would have been happy if they had fixed my car ($10,000 damage), and paid me $3,000 for my medical bills. Instead, their decision to give me a hard time made them settle by paying for my cars damage ($10,000), and paying $17,000 for medical bills, legal bills and compensation to me. Looks like their business plan is working great to save them money. Maybe they put the expected settlement into a high yield interest account for three years to earn a profit while the case is in litigation.

I would rather go uninsured than sign up with Allstate.

Strength:

NONE, although they may be cheaper than some.

Weakness:

Don't pay timely and don't pay a fair amount.

Had Allstate Ins., but once I had a claim I decided to find another. Will never use them again. They do not pay claims promptly. They will devalue your damages and even cause you to be sued if you are in the wrong by their arbitrary refusal to pay claims.

Strength:

Drive up estimates.
Best rates anywhere.
Good discounts for car safety features.

Weakness:

none to date

I have been with Allstate since I can remember, 15 years or more. Never a problem once. The longer you stay the better the rates, no even corporate rates through employer can beat my rates with Allstate. If you have home or other things insured with them you get a multiple policy discount. Very good service, 2 accidents since we have been with Allstate, no problems, drive up estimates. Very good company.

Strength:

Better prices than others I've called & compared with.

Weakness:

None.

Prices for me were always reasonable. When I moved from one town to another, my rates dropped considerably. The only two minor claims I had in 20 years (one was my fault, which resulted in about two hundred dollars in damage) were settled without any hassle. No penalty from allstate either. I have them for renters insurance as well. I'm happy with my rates.

Strength:

Low Premium Prices compared to other vendors.
Quick response on two accidents, one my wife rear ended someone in the rain, and the other was road construction damaged our vehicle while driving.

Weakness:

Unable to work with account online. Example: Looking at getting new car, can't get rates quoted

Allstate seems to have the best rates for myself and my wife. I called around to just about every major insurance company when I purchased my car in 1996. Occasionally I go out and fill out the websites that let you get new quotes, and allstate is always lower.

My wife has had one accident, and we've hit a major hole in the road that caused damage to the oil pan on another vehicle, both were fixed without incident.
