Powerdyne XB-1A
Strength:
Gear driven so it's a proven, reliable design. It's capable of flowing up to 1200cfm and 18lbs of boost. The performance of the blower now gives Powerdyne owners the option of competing with the likes of Vortech S-trims and ATI P1SC's. There is room to grow with this blower.
Weakness:
Expensive and doesn't just bolt right in without some grinding of the existing Powerdyne brackets to fit the oil lines. If buying the entire XB-1A kit, doesn't include enough extra's (fmu, fuel pump, injectors, etc) like Vortech's S-trim kit. Compared to my BD-11A head unit, no quite as nice in quality. I purchased the new gear driven Powerdyne XB-1 to replace my existing belt driven Powerdyne (BD-11A) because I simply wanted more reliable boost. It was also the least expensive route to go for upgrading to a gear driven design. On the dyno, my car gained +30rwhp/+31rwtq over my old blower (10.8psi vs 9psi). I had up to +25rwhp/+50rwtq at 4000rpm while only seeing 1.2 extra pounds of boost. This is with no dyno-tune, just bolt-on, and go. A lot more in my combo/XB-1 with some decent tuning. Similar Products Used: I replaced my existing belt driven Powerdyne, the BD-11A, with the XB-1. To be honest, I never had any problems with my BD-11 in 6,000 miles of use but I knew I was at its limit and didn't want to pus |

EVERYTHING I HAVE TO SAY THAT I WAS EXCITED ABOUT PURCHESING THIS PRODUCT, THEN..... I HAD TO WAIT A LONG TIME FOR IT TO ARRIVE. I PERFORMED THE WORK MYSELF AND IT WAS A NIGHTMARE. I HAD TO MAKE NUMEROUS TRIPS TO HARDWARE STORE. THERE WAS NO PARTS LIST, AND SOME WERE MISSING. I ORDERED THE POLISHED VERSION AND IT LOOKED LIKE THEY USED A DREMIL TOOL ON IT. IT LOOKED HORRIBLE. IT TOOK ME A DAY TO INSTALL. THE FIT? WELL IT PRETTY MUCH DOESNT. MY HOOD BLANKET IT TORE TO SHREDS NOW, I HAD TO RECLOCK THE SUPERCHARGER TO FIT, THE BY-PASS CHAFFS MY FUEL LINES(FIXED IT THOUGH)THE PULLIES ARE CHEAP PLASTIC, I CRACKED ONE JUST TIGTENING THE BELT! THE RUBBER CONNECTING PIECE WAS TOO SHORT. BUT AFTER I WAS DONE, IWAS HAPPY, IT WAS LIKE DRIVING A NEW CAR, BUT NOW ITS OLD, AND THE INTAKE TO THE SUPERCHARGER, CRAP!! Similar Products Used: NONE. |

Strength:
Low "initial" cost. Lots of low end torque. Relative ease of install. Quiet operation.
Weakness:
Apparantly powerdyne uses inferior bearings. Mine fragged and chewed up the internal drive gears and belt. Powerdyne wants around $800 to fix the head unit. 6lb unit worked well initially. Vastly improved low end power and engine pulled strong all the way to redline. Lasted about 2 years and bearings/gears and internal belt went. Powerdyne wants way too much to fix it. Recommend spending the extra cash on a better quality unit. |

good marketing dept., touting the ease of installation and patented technology...suckers you right in...
Weakness:
rotten instructions, missing parts. poor QC, questionable engineering of various components. This thing was a PITA from the beginning. Kit was missing parts, hardware, brackets etc. Obviously no Quality Control dept. for packaging this nightmare. I had to make numerous items to get the thing to mount and work. Called the company and I was told that the kit I received was for either an early or late (can't remember their excuse) 1997 Expedition 4.6L and they offer 2 kits, but their catalog only lists one kit for all 97-01 as does their app. chart on their website. But wait, it gets even better (or worse).... The supplied 10mm x 100mm bolts to mount the supercharger plate were 2mm too BIG. The holes in the engine only accept 8mm bolts. The holes in the block and head that take the 8mm bolts are 11.5mm in diameter. They said oops, you should have got the kit that has 8mm bolts. Even so, would you want the weight of the entire unit mounted with 8mm bolts waggling around in 11.5mm holes?! C'mon. I made 11.5mm OD bushings with a 8mm ID. Also had to make spacers to go in the mounting plate 10mm holes and the .600" spacers that go between the plate and engine as well. Did I mention yet that the instructions are worthless? No parts list provided so you don't know what is missing until you get to that step. Sheesh, my 4 year old could write better instructions with chalk. You can't even SEE the oil dipstick under all the plumbing for the intake side. Removal of the intake plumbing will be necessary everytime I need to check the oil level. Nice huh? Oh, it also stretches your wiring harness to the MAX to reach the relocated items on the flimsy bracketry provided. Took myself and another very savvy mechanic (with many turbo refits under his belt) almost 12 hours (times 2 people) to install (claimed easy 3 1/2 hour install), manufacture bushings, re-egineering as necessary. I could go on and on...but most have stopped reading by now. I bet you have guessed by now that I am not recommending this product. Similar Products Used: none |

Compact size. I think the design is basically good.
Weakness:
bearings, Poor customer service I installed it on my 96 Z28. One of the impeller bearings came apart at 40,000 miles and I caught it before it caused any damage. I disassembled it to see what was inside. Powerdyne refused to sell me a bearing and wanted $400-$500 to fix it. I researched different bearing manufacturers and found a company in California that made me one for $50.00. No kidding! Powerdyne uses a metric bearing probably sourced from the lowest bidding vendor on earth. If anybody is interested I will be glad to tell you how I repaired mine. My belt was o.k. but I think Gates makes it. I just haven''t looked for it. I have since put another 20,000mi on this bearing with no problems. |

Cost, ease of installation and reliability once the tensioner was removed
Weakness:
Stupid internal tensioner that locked up I just took a 9 pound Powerdyne off my 1995 Mustang. Initially, I had an internal belt breakage problem after about 10K. For some reason, they had a small tensioner pulley on the inside that didn''t need to be there. It locked up and smoked the kevlar belt and trashed the bearings. Back in 1997, they sent me a new kevlar belt for $50. I took care of the bearings myself. The ceramic one was tough to track down. The project cost me $200 all together. Since the rebuild and removal of the tensioner, I''ve had no problems. I''ve put about 40K on it. I''ve had a 9 pound pulley on it for the last year. You gotta keep the drive belt REAL tight to avoid slippage. My boost gage reads 8#. I''m now going to put it on my 99 F 150 since the car is about to be sold. Powerdyne makes a kit for trucks. So overall, really pleased. Similar Products Used: None |

Internal belt broke after only 6 or 8 months of use. They wont sell me a new belt and bearings. I've tried several times to buy parts for it. I always get the same answer: "We don't sell internal parts." They wanted me to send it to them and let them fix it for $400+. No thanks, I'm still pissed that it broke so soon, why would I send them more money? Similar Products Used: Have not used any other power adders. |
