Strength:

they hit really hard and sound good on many types of music, good quality

Weakness:

they arent the best but for the price i really like them

i have 3 of em hooked to the Kicker ZR 240 in my single cab chevy full size truck, and with the windows down in outlaw style i registered 141.8 db @49Hz i think that is a really good number for 3 150$ subs. now if you are competing in a strict sound quality comp, then i dont know what kind of luck you will have, but for an everyday pounding, these are GREAT! i recommend to anyone who doesnt want to spend an ass load on good hard bass.

Model Reviewed: 2000 Kicker 12" Comp. VR

Strength:

I have one of these Kicker Comp 12's crammed behind the seat of a regular cab Toyota pickup. It ROCKS! I have it running off of an Alpine T407 amplifier bridged mono, about 400 watts peak. The box is pretty small, about 1.1 cubic feet, but it still performs well. I listen to a wide range of music and this thing can handle it all! It responds very quickly to the bass of hard rock, and hits the extreme lows of rap. I was also impressed with the seemingly small amount of space and power Kicker requires for their subs.

Weakness:

I really don't have any problems with this sub. The thing sounds great! However, I would like to see what it could do in a slightly larger box. My box is probably a little small for the sub, but definately in the manufacturer's optimum range. I would like to see this sub with a little bit longer throw, it seems slightly confined but the slight distortion in sound is not noticed until very near full volume.

I found a pretty good deal on this sub. I paid $170 at a local dealer which is probably the lowest retail price I could find, it's MSRP is $200. When I bought it I was looking for a sub that I could "do right" the first time and not have to keep upgrading to bigger and better. Kicker's a well known name and I was impressed with their impulse stuff so I decided to go for the COMP. The dealer said that it tends to carry a wider base range than the 12XPL, and even suggested the Comp. over the XPL (I was originally leaning towards the more expensive XPL). Overall I'm more than impressed with this subwoofer. When integrated in with the rest of my system it really performs! I definately reccommend this sub if you are trying to get some excellent bass into a smaller enclosure because Kicker's entire line of subs is designed for "tight spaces".

Similar Products Used:

I've heard the MTX 5000's and 6000's and this thing definately out performs them in the single sub category. I also have used Pioneer 12's and 10's (not a good comparison of course because the Kicker kills them) I've also heard some DD audio, which is way more expensive than this Kicker and the Comp. 12VR can definately hang.

Model Reviewed: kicker comp VR15

Strength:

I have tried many subs for my grand cherokee and had decent success, but when I put two of these fellas on a cheap ass lanzar 250 (300w ea. approx), I metered 145.7. With a cleaner, larger amp, who knows. The bass is a little sloppy under 40hz but is still loud with the proper box. I used a 1.8 cu/ft at first since it was the minumu kicker rated size, but then I got a 2.2 and the sound became much cleaner, deeper, louder.

Weakness:

a little sloppy, but at reasonable levels (140dB and under) they are actually purty damn tight

If you dont want to shell out your a bunch of money for stuff that isnt going to sound that much money (unless you are sound quality person) then these should be on your next list of things to purchase. If you have some power to spare, then pick up the solo barics or XPLs, but kicker is the way to go.

Earthquake magma 12, Soundstream SPL12, Earthquake LS15, JLw0, SOundstream Rubicon, MTX, others. at first I believed the SPL to be the best, but I liked the deep bass of the magma. the 15" comp VR is as loud as the SPLs and hit as low as the magma. It is about half the price of the magma and needs half the power.

Strength:

Great SPL. Makes me sorry I spent so much on some of the other subs I have because the price per push on these babies is excellent. Can push a temendous amount of air for the wattage I put to them.

Weakness:

I noticed some distortion when it would switch from low-end bass to the higher-end bass, must be because of the slower return. I noticed high-end bass sounded ok if it was singled out on a bass test, but still a little sloppy. That and my ears won't stop ringing when I step out of the car.

If I had one word to describe the Kicker CompVR it would be impressive. I had heard my friend bragging about how good they sounded at a car show, so I went ahead and bought some (this was the pre-solo baric era). I paid $200 new for a pair of them - I have seen them advertised for anywhere from $110 to $150. Any more than $150 and I probably wouldn't be so impressed. That's what makes them so impressive is that they are a very cost-effective way to reach that high SPL that you've always wanted. I had money left over by getting a deal on the speakers so I bought 2 sony xm-1002hx amps (which are very versatile). I tried out one amp pushing 100watts to each speaker. i was amazed at the damage they did. I couldn't see anything in my mirrors. I figured that another 200watts couldn't hurt. I then experienced the "surround bass" effect that you can feel in cars with proper air space, speaker position and wattage. I have them hooked up in an individually sealed box with 1.2cft. behind them in a hatchback car. I believe they obviously out do the Jensens I once had, tore apart my MTX 5000s, and demolished my Rockford Fosgate Punches and they outdid my 8000s at similar watts, but once I pushed 400 watts each to my 8000s, the 8000s tore them apart. JL W6s are better quality bass and Kicker Solos are also. Overall, I would say that if you want a sweet sub but don't want to spend $200 or more, then go for the CompVR. If you want something to totally kill any competition you might have, go for the solos, jls, or mtx 8000s, spend some cash, and get ready to put some wattage to them.

Similar Products Used:

Jensen (back in the day), MTX 5000s and the new 8000s, JL W6s, Rockford Fosgate Punch, and Kicker Solo-Baric (not the new L7 models). I only go with the 12inch models on all subs I buy and test.

Strength:

Deep bass and low distortion levels make for a very good sounding sub. I have these subs hooked up getting around 250 watts each, in 1.1 cu foot enclosures and they rock!

Weakness:

The only thing I can find that I don't like about these subs really is that they are stitched together, I mean it might sound stupid to you guys, and hey maybe I don't know but Im always checking the stitching to make sure the thing isnt falling apart or nothing. You can just tell the difference in quality by putting the comps up to the solo barics. the barics are all one piece, no stitching, the huge magnet diff, and the rubber surround instead of the crappy foam stuff.

I paid 300 for the pair, including tax. I am ver satisfied with them, I would recomend them for anyone who wants to raise above the baseline, buy one get one free subs (MTX Audios, or JBL's, Pioneers, Kenwoods, Etc), who is still looking for an economical, all round good sounding sub.

MTX blue thunders, Legends, 7000's (I LIKE MTX) The Kickers are very comparable to the 7000's in my opinion and I got them at a cheaper price.

Strength:

very deep

Weakness:

slopy, very slopy!

The Kicker is ok if you just want deep base for SPL. I put one in a 1.2 cubic foot sealed box hooked up my Sony XM1002HX bridged (280 RMS), and heard the deepest slopyest base I have ever heard! The Cerwin Vega A.I. and the JLW6 in the same box and amp sound twice as good with hard hitting base with a good deep thumping. If all you wany is SPL and do not mind the slop then get the kicker. Or spend a extra $30 and get the Vega!
