I'm running 250 watts RMS to a 12w3 in a sealed enclosure and it sounds unbelievable. While it may not have the spl of most other subs (don't worry, it still gets really loud), it defintely outclasses most subs with its incredible sound quality. The bass from this sub is actually clean and punchy instead of muddy and rumbling. The only sub I've ever heard with better sound quality is the eclipse 8812 aluminum cone; but unfortunately that sub costs about 350 a pop. The 12w3 gets a 4.5 for sound quality and 4 for price.

I have bought two of the 12W3-2 woofers, and so far I have traied only of them in a sealed box. I have connected the JL to an amplifire that is rated to produce 290W rms into 4ohm load. The woofer was connected in parallel givning a load of two ohms, so its getting more power from the amplifire. I have install it in my brothers Jeep Wrangler and man this woofer had blown me away. The Hard top of the wrangler was shaking and my brother couldnt withstand the loudness of this woofer and enterd the house. After a minuet he came out and he told that he felt the doors resonating in the house. I really like those subs.

I had waded through the gauntlet of available brands and drivers. I decided that a good 10" sub was what I needed for my 98 Z-28. None of the Japanese brands sounded any good at all. The MTX bottomed out easily. The Bostons were so-so. I did install a Polk DB, which seemed the best of the lot. It was good, but murky below 60hz. I went by a JL audio dealer and was totally blown away. The W3, which is a dual voice coil had as much low bass as many 12" drivers, high SPL, and far tighter response at all frequency ranges. For $189---it cannot be beaten. I repeat CANNOT BE BEATEN! If I were getting a bigger sub, I'd get a 12" JL audio. I am sold. It's nice to hear instruments, not just throbbing noise.

I currently have one of these units (recently gave up my stroke Why?, it sounded like true horsey dung, if you know what I mean.) The 10W3 is so much cleaner, that the big stroke that I am almost in awe. Same to rockfords slop-bombs. Does anyone out there know of a woofer that is actually tight? Please understand- my standards are extremely high. After work I sit down in front of a multi tens of kilobucks home system. Problem, love music in the car far, far more. Too bad I can't find a truly kick-ass sub.
4 stars to the JL for at least making an effort at musicality.

I tried out the JL Audio 12W3, 12" They sounded the best in the world. The reason I even bought them was because I found a place on the internet, that sold them cheap. The local stores were wanting $240 per 12 w3. Well I went to http://www.TheWeb-Mall.com And I found them for $196 and free shipping. So I bought 2 of them. I love them to death.

Strength:

Well, they hit really deep and catch up on the low bass sounds. Play great at high volumes and dont distort. God these bubs pound!!!

Weakness:

not much really. Batterie went dead after 3 minutes, thats all.

These subs kick ass!! when i first heard them in the display case at the store, they were loud. Stuff was vibrating everywhere, my feet were vibrating. Then i get them installed in my car and i was like holy god damn, thats loud. I paid 1900 bucks canadian for two 12w3's, 800.2 rockford amp, custom box, dynamat, tax and all installed. Im happy. And canadian money is worth dick sh*t, so thats like 1200 U.S.?

Strength:

Amazing sound quality combined with strikingly high output (with most subs, you get one or the other) Subs don't require a lot of power to pound it out, but have no problem taking several times their rated limit. Priced to outperform everyone in their price class and most in price classes well above their own.

Weakness:

The terminals are fragile for such a overall high quality subwoofer. Some screw-type terminals would have been a much better choice

I have had several different setups over the past 4 years. And I have also done quite a few for friends and locals. These subwoofers are by far the best I have heard. Simply amazing! They have tight, accurate bass response at nearly any volume in a sealed box. But if you want serious SPL, a ported inclosure (specs at www.jlaudio.com) is definitely the way to go.
In my '93 Amigo with an Xtant 2140c and a dual-chambered box w/ 4 inch ports (each chamber is 2.3 cubic foot), I've nearly reached my goal of 143 db. For those of you that have never seen an Amigo, it is a mid-sized SUV with the whole back 1/3 covered with an SPL robbing cloth top. My subs are way in the back under the cloth top, and I am still able to clear the 140 db mark. Plans for the future (next 2 or 3 months) include a new JL audio 500/1.
For those who want some idea of how they perform in a normal vehicle (ie. not a cloth top or convertible), I went to a sound-off competition as a spectator (if I can find a decent looking hardtop to put on my Amigo, I'll enter myself in one) There was a new VW hatchback at the competition with 2 12W3-D4's. I don't know what kind of amp(s) he was running, but with just those 2 12's, they guy hit 148.7 db. And the new W7 series is supposed to be 3 times louder. (ie. 1 12W7 is 7.6 db louder than a single 12W3, or about as loud as 3 12W3's combined)

Similar Products Used:

2 JL 12W4's, 2 Fosgate 15's, old style Solobaric 10's, Moblie Authority 12's (not even worth mentioning, heh, we all make mistakes when we're first getting started)
