Looks, power, reliability
Weakness:
stock tires, paint is thin and chips easily, O2 sensors, seat belt retractors, wiring harness for trailer towing didn't last overnight TRD Limited, October 1999, currently 132,000 miles. Use it to pull trailer w/tractor, 22 ft sailboat, firewood, etc. Been through 3 sets of BF Goodriches finally went to Michelin LTX (truck tires) Michelins improved ride and handling and wear better. Have had 2 4X4 Hilux (200,000+ on both) 1 4Runner (17 yrs & 375,000 miles). Pleased w/ power, ride, handling (esp since Michelins), and fuel mileage. Disappointed in Dealer attitude, thin paint, seat belt retractors but hae gotten used to all. Hope the truck lasts as long as my other Toyotas. Considering the new Honda when it comes out. Tundra SR5 4x4
Strength:
acceleration. Easy & fun to drive and very predictable handling, a celica with a bed. Feels solid, everything works
Weakness:
1) Poor suspension for unimproved roads. Ground clearance listed at 11.25 inches is actually 9 inches, ( truck sets 1.25 inches lower than the minimum allowed in the toyota alignment specs), as measured by dealer. Front end bottoms at even the smallest bumps. 2) Rear drums warped at 6000 miles. By 12000 miles, on third set of front rotors and second set of rear drums, (drums have been turned twice), as well as new calipers, backing plates and adjusters. Brakes still bounce. 3) Gas mileage between 11 and 14 mpg 4) Seat belts are always in the doors, don't rewind and can't put them on if parked on a steep hill, (won't release)5) No manual transmission available and auto needs 1 more gear Good vehicle for travelling, going to town and hauling bikes to the park. Smooth ride, drives very well, good power, adequate room, above average quality. The most refined ride of any of the trucks available. Not so good for carrying loads or pulling trailers in hilly country or on rough roads Similar Products Used: 1986 toyota 4x4 Best truck ever 1996 chev 2500 4x4 OK 1999 ford super duty No quality or reliability. lots of recalls |

The truck is gorgeous. It takes off on excelleration, the gas mileage is fair, and it rides great.

The BRAKES SUCK!!!!!!! Hey TOYOTA! The BRAKES SUCK! Besides that it pulls to one side, but that's another issue. Oh!By the way. THE BRAKES SUCK! I,ve been driving trucks for about 20 yrs, and when I ws ready to buy a new one, I wanted the best there was. Since I do light construction, I didn't need a bruiser. The Tundra seemed perfect for me. The truck looks great, it handles great, it stops like crap. The brakes absolutely suck. I have 5,000mi on my truck and the dealer says that I warped the rotors. I've been driving for 32 yrs and never warped rotors before. I'm just starting to get involved with the dealership. You should have seen the mechanics face when I dropped the TSB on his lap. He still insists that he has to road test the vehicle. Why? So that he can tell me that the rotors have to be turned? Face it guys, Toyota knows they screwed up on this one, but they refuse to do a recall. Arm yourself with a copy of their service bulletin BR004-02 and go have some fun with your dealer. Strength:
Power, Speed, Comfort, Looks, Overall Quality of the truck. None of the initial problems and cheap construction of my previous truck (GMC 1500 Sierra).
Weakness:
Windows rattle when down less than half way (goes away when farther down). Wiper switch is easy to hit accidentally. Auxillary electronics (power outlets, cargo light, fog lights) only work under limited circumstances (car on, lights on, not moving, Etc.). I would like more control. Hate to complain about small things, but the clock position is a pain. It's a little too nice of a truck for me! I really love this truck so far. I have only put 8,000 mi. on it, but I have had none of the brake problems I have read about, and I think the transmission is great. I pull a boat (about 2200 lbs) regularly and have had no problems. I also have not had any paint problems, but I had a dealer added sealer that may have helped (Toyoguard package Paint sealer, undercoating, scotchguard, and alarm with keyless entry - $619). I have a matching color fiberglass topper, and the truck really turns heads! The performance has been great so far. BRAKES The tundra tows my horse trail better than my new GMC. B U T, If I could I would sell or even give to the junk yard for free because of the brake problem. In the last month I have taken it back to the dealer for brake problems 4 times. As a retired CHP officer I can tell you TOYOTA has a HELL OF A BIG PROBLEM with the brakes. It needs to be off the road. Similar Products Used: NONE |

Pulls good,plenty of power.
Weakness:
Rattles in dash, doors. Squeaks in the suspension area. Brakes. Just overall POOR quality in assembly. Very nice looking truck, but I'm not totally pleased with it. I think Toyota made a big mistake by not building this truck in Japan. Quality has gone downhill since then. Strength:
Great towing and load capacity, excellent power. Truck has been very reliable.
Weakness:
Recommend adding front window deflectors, keeps rain out when window opened and wipers on. Paint is thin. Bought new October 99. Have 76,000 miles mostly commuting stop & go. Average 16-17 MPG. Just put on third set of tires. Replaced front rotors and rear drums at 60,000 miles. Very happy with the truck. Have loaded one Harley in the back and pulled two more on trailer and don't even feel the change in driving or handling. The paint does show excessive chipping. BRAKES! BRAKES! BRAKES! Paint and dealer courtesy. And did I mention the brakes I was excited about owning a Toyota truck. I thought the Tundra looked great and would be a great buy. Now I wish I would have better researched it. At 4000 miles I had my first brake problems. The dealer told me it was because I towed too much or it was because of stop and go driving. I have yet to tow with it and I live in a semi-rural area. Now at 13000 miles and 8 months, my brakes are starting to trouble me again. Plus, I'm seeing chips in the paint from thin paint. Transmission kind of rough. Similar Products Used: Nissan Frontier |

Weakness:
See summary. This truck has been a series of bad experiences. Brakes have been worked on three times and replaced/machined twice, door rattle took 5 trips to the dealer to fix, center console cover would not stay latched and took three trips to dealer to fix, engine makes a tapping sound like a Model T that the dealer can't figure out what causes it, warped exhaust manifold had to be replaced, oxygen sensor went bad, battery shorted out and left me stranded, paint is soft and scratches easily, plastic grill is fading and looks terrible, sometimes the door locks will operate and the lights flash when I go around the corner. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but I know there's more. I've spent more time in two years sitting outside the dealers service department with this piece of junk than I did in ten years of owning my Ford F150 (I'm no Ford fan, but I thought all the money would buy me something better with Toyota, I was mistaken).
