4WD front differential crown wheel teeth breaking off after less than 1year Dear carreview My Business partner and I each purchased a used Toyota Tundra V8 4WD Automatic last November, after careful consideration. And now I am experiencing problems with the front Differential. I returned the vehicle to Nassco the Toyota Dealer/importer in Barbados, only to be told that the vehicle is not covered by any warranty. The crown wheel has teeth broken off inside the front differential. Surely this is not acceptable with a vehicle that is so new. My partners truck is now expriencing the same problem. We should not have to pay for the repairs should we? I know that in the states there is a 5 year drive train warranty, We dont go mountain climbing with our trucks ,even though through the adverts we are led to believe that these are all terrain vehicles. Has there been a recall for these trucks?? please advise. We only pull speed boats up and down the beach, surely the truck is designed to do this simple light duty, after all they come with a towbar, or is this just a truck for posing in. Similar Products Used: 1985 Landrover109, 4.0L Cherokee Chief(1985) Both vehicles were used to perform the same duties, for the last five years, without any problems. |

Strength:
drives nice, very smooth, lovely finish. Not like driving a truck at all.
Weakness:
We use these trucks every day to pull our inboard V8 ski boats. The trucks are put in and out of 4WD twice a day to launch and retrieve boats. After just 4 mths of this, one truck has 27,000 miles, and the othe 17,000 miles both the front difs went out completely. crown wheel teeth broke off. I am not impressed. Owned a 1991 Jeep Cherokee that did the same job for 4 years never broke a thing and the cherokee had to work harder casue it doesn't have the power of the Tundra. Would not buy another one. Have had several Toyota cars and a 2 hilux's but am doubtful if I'll own another. I actually have two of these in my company. Bought at the same time, both from a dealer one was 9 mths old, the other 5 mths old.Until the last month was very impressed with Truck. Apart from the usual brake problems that everyone complains about and the seat belt retractors suck. But MAJOR problem now with 4 WD. Strength:
good runing truck, pulls my boat just fine lots of power, low end torque, engeniered well as all toyotas are handles good, a dream to drive [once you get used to the vibration]
Weakness:
brake pads only good for 25000miles [acording to dealer] warped roter 2 times in 22000 mi. brakes def. need a recall. this is a safty issue here. O2 sensors onlt good for 50000mi. 3 replaced before 60000 mi. cracked exhaust manifold, this could be the lifter noise you here in the morning, for those of you that do. sure more will show up with time mostly in sensors, there are some horror storys out there I'm sure. just be sure to have a pocket full of money and get the longest extended waranty offerd when you are ready to buy. PS if any one knows a toyota dealer, with a good service dept.let me know. also don't take it out on the service writer, he's just a middle man with nothing to do with what goes on, find the service manager and chock the snot out of him, he doesn't have any ting to do with it either but you will feel much beter when you leave. very good truck lots of power and handles great with the exeption of a vibration in the front end or somewhere, dealer can't seem to be able to find it. I sure would not want to be a service writer for a dealer. with all the problemes they have,O2 sensers, brakes good for 25000 miles, cracked exhaust manifold, noisy pullys at front of moter. service dept. in gen are no help at all, I complain about a lifter noise, they tell me "we checked the oil, it's fine" well what about the noise? this went on at 2 dif. dealers, I finaly told the second one if you cant find the noise, replace the moter, they found a cracked exhaust manifold, repaired at cost of deduct. warranty, also why do I have a dif. in price on my deduct? any one else? Strength:
The truck is a lot quicker than I thought it would be. I've beaten everything I've tried to race. Passing "speed up" drivers at freeway speeds is too easy. You might get a ticket. Resale value remains very high. Best looking truck on the road. Almost too pretty for a truck. Passed the off center crash test way better than any of the big 3. It looked like it was going to take the "jaws of life" to remove the dummy from the Ford.
Weakness:
Stock suspension is too mushy. It's a truck not a boat. A rear sway bar fixes that. Just a couple of more inches here and there and Toyota would have made a truck the same size as the big 3. Actually though I like the size of the truck. Very happy with this truck. Nice inside and out. The motor is strong and smooth. Needs a rear sway bar added to it but after that is installed it handles very well. 10 months old and I've had zero problems. Similar Products Used: I do fleet maintance at a state agency and see the big 3 daily. Dodge trucks break all the time and have the lowest resale value. Any one have a head crack on a 5.9L? I've had 3. Trans problems on 3 |

Some design faults. Should recall on brakes and sensors. Problems with sensors...engine light comes on and stays on...$400 to replace. Brakes shudder. Overdrive hangs when first engaging, especially in stop-n-go traffic. Similar Products Used: Now on third Toyota truck. Total over 500,000 miles. |
