Possibly an optional turbo charger and intercooler? Actually I borrowed this truck from a friend to use for about a month, and I pushed this turck hard. I have been hauling some scrap metal, dirt, atv's, bobcats, people, OTHER TRUCKS(more on that later) and pretty much everything just trying to get a lot cleaned up for another friend. I first tried using a dodge but gas was costing way too much an I noticed I never really needed the 4 tons towing capacity. So i borrowed Toms truck (thanks Tom), a 2000 Toyota Prerunner SR5 4x4 Xtra-Cab, the Taco just felt better! It was easier to hadle, easier to get where I needed, which was up a very large racky and rooty hill, I used alot less gas and got alot better gas milage. Then it rained for three days straight and I got to use the 4x4 it was great better than any chevy or ford I have ever driven, I pulled out 7 other vehicles after I was too tired to drive any more, the truck seemed to ask for more(1 jeep, 1 dodge, 2 chevys, 2 fords, and 1 nissan frontier). Right now I am currently arranging my finaces to buy one, which is not very hard especially becuase of the great price! If Jesus were an automobile he'd be a Taco. Similar Products Used: None there really is nothing like it, other trucks seemed too heavy and bulky, still other too small and underpowered but the Taco is just right. |

SR5 TRD X-tra Cab 4X4 V-6
Strength:
built for off road travel: Skid plates, suspension, big meats and the rear diff. Well built and well sealed cabin realiable like few are handles well in twisties plenty of head room decent stock stereo- tape and CD better gas milage than SUVs ample power from the V6 low range great for crawling
Weakness:
fender flare seal prone to popping off at fuel cover, jarring ride over potholes, cab could be a tad wider, rear brakes grab at stoplights. some nusience repairs: oil filter gasket leak(reciever on the block), water pump leak, 1 leaking Bilstein shock, numerous fender flares- all repaced under warranty with no hassles. I bought this truck new about 2 years ago(28,000mi) and, aside from a few small warranty repairs, have been satisfied completely. I chose this truck in large part because of its awesome off-road capibility, which it has in spades. I have had to take it in for a few minor hiccups, most notably the fender flare issue, but all covered under warranty. Even at 6'6'' I have no problems fitting into the cab, and have survived numerous long distance hauls in the front buckets- which are supportive but not exactly lux. As far as the ride, it is still for sure- esp. in the TRD models. But I would rather have a stiff road ride and not sacrifice the off road prowess. If you don't "wheel" don't get the TRD. I actually find the stiff suspension handles corners with aplomb, and it feels much closer to the road than it is.The tranny does shift a bit rough at times, but my buddy at AAMCO says that's because its bulletproof. Interior is simple and practical, and better yet easy to clean. Factory stereo is adequate- lacks the low end of a BOSE system, but that isn't an option. I installed a K&N air filter and get very good fuel efficiency for a V6- 18-25mpg. During the last blizzard in Denver I was of the few people who could get of of my neighborhood- great in the snow. As I said, off-road this rig is pretty good stock, but there are also many upgrade kits to make it an off-road warrior. All in all, not a better compact truck on the market. I tried 'em all and if you do want a smooth shifting,soft-sprung, city truck, try a Nissan Frontier. Its a lot of what a Taco isn't, good and bad. I expect this truck to last me for a very long time, even with the beatings I give it on the trail. I 've tested the skid plates(ouch) and I don't care if they're in the way of the oil filter- at least they work! Pop out the dent, spray a little black paint on and they're good to go. I can also vouch for the locking rear diff- it really climbs the ugly stuff. After 2 years and a lot of rough riding the cab is still a quiet, rattle free enclave- high marks for fit and finish. Find a better compact truck- if you can. For crowd who spend a lot of time in the mountains or trails there's no comp. Similar Products Used: had an old Nissan driven many |

Strength:
4x4 is really good. Living up here in NH I've had many chances to use it, and even with a solid 14-18 inches of snow, I was getting around with no difficulty. Stock stereo is as good as others have stated.
Weakness:
Transmission. I have a automatic 4 cyl, and it sounds odd when it shifts. I've heard the same thing from others with automatics. This is perhaps the one weak aspect of this truck, and it sucks it happens to be one of t he most costly aspects of it. I'm expecting a new transmission will be needed by the time I hit 120k miles or so. (complete guess, but I expect to need one). And it's more prone to rust as most know, due to Toyota using recycled steel, but oh well. A good, strong truck so far. I bought it with 23k miles a year ago, and I now have 40k on it. Nothing has gone wrong in the time I have had it. Similar Products Used: Chevy S10 (Piece of Sh__) |

Strength:
Very good integrity, no squeaks or rattles. Good stock stereo, brakes are excellent.
Weakness:
Loud interior, seats uncomfortable, 4 cylinder does not have enough power. Very expensive to repair, parts are priced high. I put 72000 miles on my Tacoma. I started having computer trouble with the truck. I had a tuneup done, then the fuel pump went out, had that replaced, but the truck still would not run properly. If your toyota breaks down, get ready to bend over, they are very costly to fix. Also, the toyota technicians believe in their computers, mine told them there was nothing wrong. It would be a good thing for Toyota to get rid of the expensive all-in-one computer and go with modules like Nissan. Basically, my truck was getting ready to cost me another $1400.00, I traded it in on a Ford. Similar Products Used: Ford Ranger, Dodge Dakota |

Strong truck, reliable and good looks.
Weakness:
Auto tranny with V-6. Bumpy ride. Overall its alright. Notice that the shifting of the automatic tranny can be rough. Bumpy ride, and be careful stepping on the gas on a wet day around a corner. The tail will slide out like a fish. Similar Products Used: First truck since I was in High School. Had a 1979 toyota pu. |

Strength:
Appearance, very flachy with the SR5 package(chrome everything). Interior: great stereo/CD, 4 cupholders, white faced gauges. Interior feels well built.
Weakness:
2.4L I4 a little lacking on acceleration especially with ext cab. One small dash rattle, a little sway in windy conditions, well its a light truck I guess. Decent gas mileage, expected better, but then again I do a lot of city driving. Have had the truck for about 6 months, no problems yet. Look forward to a long life with lots of miles on it. Tacoma Prerunner 2.7-4cyl
Strength:
Reliability, reliability, reliability, I guess I could say it a thousand times. Always starts and runs and gets me where I need to go. Power is adequate for a 4 cly. Rarely need more power. Good gas mileage for a truck. 23 on the highway.
Weakness:
Not terribly comforatable. I did help the comfort some by putting 1" spaces under the rear seat mounts. I had to get longer bolts to maintain safety, but it was no problem to get them. This helped the seat quit a bit. Leaned it forward which is better for me. Still I think I could drive the truck all day with 15 minute rest stops every 2 hours to stretch. (65 years old) I think in my younger days the comfort factor would not be noticeable. I love this truck. It has an automatic transmission that has been rock solid. I have 45000 miles on this vehicle with no problems yet. I have noticed the tendency to jump at stop signs when you turn on the Fan or A/C. I think the engine RPM's increase and that may be why it happens. Scared me the first time it happened, but I got used to it. Overall a great truck. Similar Products Used: Chevrolet trucks and SUVs. |
