Tacoma 4x4 xtra-cab TRD
Strength:
Power, torque, gearing.
Weakness:
TRD package is a joke. Shocks are far too weak. Computer is too sensitive. Poor gas mileage. Good truck but have had some problems. Not as strong as pre-tacoma trucks. Poor gas mileage- 17mpg on hiway. Ride is much nicer that the old Toyotas. At 37,000 miles broke both Bilstein TRD shocks up front. Was expensive to fix, and not covered under warranty. Also, MAF got dirty and almost stranded me in the middle of nowhere. Dealer fixed it for 100.00, but never should have happened. Transmission feels a little rough when shifting- 5 speed. The truck has plenty of power, great torque, and excellent gearing in 4-low. K&N filter helps. Overall a good truck, but over priced for what you get. I only hope it lasts as long as my other toyotas. Similar Products Used: 93 Toyota 4x4 94 Toyota 4x4 86 Ford 150 64 Nissan Patrol |

Toyota Tacoma, extra cab
Strength:
Smooth engine and nice ride, especially for a truck. Mine has 63,000 miles on it and hasn't had a single problem. Great on gas and oil use.
Weakness:
None; so far, it's flawless. Having an extra cab gives me plenty of space. I love my truck so much! Tacomas are awesome not only because they are one of the most reliable automobiles on the face of the earth, but because they can look either "masculine" or more "feminine." Toyota Tacoma TRD
Strength:
Overall very reliable. Locking diff.
Weakness:
Rack and pinion steering. Suspension. This is my third toyota truck. Like the last two it is built with typical toyota reliability. I must say though; that the tacoma is not built as tough as pre-95 toyota trucks. I do some fairly aggresive fourwheeling and the new rack and pinion steering seems to loosen up prematurely. I certainly do give toyota credit for giving a rear locker from the factory. The spring rates on the tacoma off road package are a little on the soft side bottoming out fairly easy. The bilstein shocks are a joke if you are in to any serious off roading. Ground clearance is the best in class but a couple on inches lift does'nt hurt. 32" tires can fit without a lift which is always good. I have put 97,500 miles on my truck in almost four years. The rack and pinion was replaced under warranty at 36,000 miles, but it needs replaced again. It does'nt leak it just has alot of play. I have replaced the starter but I delivered pizza in the truck most of its life. The 2.7 liter is bullet proof and has adequate power if you are not towing. The interior of the truck has held up well, but their is a very annoying rattle in the dash. The clutch is a little on the weak side mine was replaced at 60,000 miles. The front bumber is useless, it would be the first thing I would replace. The new ones are better (more metal). Tacomas are expensive to fix but inturn offer good reliability. If you keep it on the road it will run forever. Stay out of deep mud because it will destroy your engine seals which are expensive to fix! If you do any serious off roading do a soild axle swap so you don't have to worry about the rack and pinion. From experienc I will tell you that toyota's are much better built than the domestics. Do not by a chevy s-10. Similar Products Used: 1995 tacoma, 1993 truck |

Weakness:
194,500 miles in 8 years? Are you kidding me. OK, let me think . . . well, the return springs on the seat belts are crap. I bought this truck in June 1995 after my 94 Toyota P/U was destroyed by a hail storm. I had not even made the 3rd payment. The weird thing is I ended up with a better vehicle. I have 194,500 miles on my truck. Everything on it is original except the EGR valve (replaced at 180,000), plug wires (180,000) and the front brake pads (171,000). The truck gets 29.5 mpg, still runs strong and even has the original belts, hoses, shocks and rear brake shoes. Unbelieveable! I fully expect to drive 325,000 miles on the car before I even think about buying another Tacoma. TOYOTA'S RULE! You're freakin' idiot if you buy anything else! Strength:
Excellent idle/rev quality Smooth 5 speed manual trans Ultra shiny paint..no pits or cracking Flawless interior that holds up well *Super durable truck that will be in my garage for decades to come
Weakness:
Noisy rattle in exhaust...will correct by replacing with high flow aftermarket stainless performance exhaust. That's it! Regular cab/short bed with 2.4l I-4 Great truck! Had a minor rattle in the exhaust at 5000 miles (fixed by dealer in <5 min) which has redeveloped at 60000 miles. Other than that...no problems! The motor and trans are smooth and solid. The interior is rattle free and the seats still look new. I love this little truck and will keep it until the wheels fall off (should take years with a Toyota). Currently have 72000 miles on her and she still idles smoother than my 99 Ford with 35000 miles. Love my Ford, but predict the Tacoma will outlast her. Fun to drive, looks great, good clearance, strong engine decent stereo.
Weakness:
Seats are horrible. They look and feel really cheap. I wish I had gotten the limited truck cause it comes with sport seats. Clock is in horrible position..can't see it at all. I have a 03 Tacoma Ext. Cab V6 Auto 4x4 Sr5 TRD and I love it. The tranny shift smoothly and the engine has adequate power to climb even the steepest hills. Gas mileage is OK and I love the tachometer. Toyota
Strength:
Stereo system is awesome. Handles great on the highway, stable, tracks easily. In 4WD it handles like a champ, driven on black ice, snow, mud and loose gravel, unbeatable. Easy to shift the transfer case too. Good power for a 4 cyl. Can you beat the style?
Weakness:
Space in the Xtra cab is cramped, too small for an adult. Minor problems with the trim on the fender flares coming loose. Condensation in some of the parking lights. Changing the oil filter requires a contortionist. I walked on the lot and I was sold before I drove it. I love this truck. I've driven from highway to off road and have no complaints. Toyota's service has been excellent and they have taken care of any problem from burned out light bulbs to A/C troubles. For a 4WD truck it handles great on road and off. Gas mileage could be better. Tacoma Doulble Cab V6
Strength:
Perfect mix of power, performance and luxery!
Weakness:
As we all know the clock! Cheap brake rotors and weird downshift that is said to be normal by just about every owner I've talked to. Made it to the first service(5000 miles). Love this truck!! Plenty of power, room and accessories. Only three minor problems to date. Front rotors were warped the day I drove the truck home-replaced under warr. The clock couldn't be in a worse place. Transmission downshifts from second to first after you stop and let off the brake. I hope to have this addressed at the dealer during this service. From posts I've read this happens on most Tacoma's-would like to hear from Toyota that this is normal. Similar Products Used: Chevy blazer, Ford Bronco and Ranger, Jeep Wrangler |
