Strength:

Lots of nice options for the money.

Weakness:

Weak V-6.

Long periods of waiting and fighting to get warranty work done.
After threatening with legal action, I finally got a dealer to fix a severe clunk in my driveline when stopping and taking off. The driveline was covered under warranty, but I fought with the dealer for nearly a year. Currently, I have a "popping" noise in the front end when turning and both taking off and stopping. The driveline fix did not eliminate this noise and the dealer refuses to fix the problem until Mazda provides them with an appropriate fix. The warranty is for 50,000 miles, but what good is a warranty if the dealer refuses to fix problems covered under the warranty?
Because of these on-going problems, I strongly caution anyone against purchasing a Mazda B-Series or Ford Ranger truck. I wish I hadn't.

Strength:

Bulletproof reliability. My 1990 B2200 2wd regular cab short bed was the best vehicle I have ever owned. I bought it with 20k miles and traded it with 74k. It was never in the shop. The air conditioner (yes it had one!) is the the coldest one I have ever seen in any vehicle! The thing would freeze you out! It got decent mileage (23) for a truck, and was fun to drive. The sunrise red color looked great and the 5 spd manual was smooth to shift.

Weakness:

Bench seat got to be a little hard on long trips, but that is all I can think of.

Without hesitation I would recommend this truck to anyone looking for a smaller pickup. Probably not the best choice for towing (4 cyl) but for light hauling and transportaion this incredibly reliable truck is hard to beat. I was sincerely disappointed that Mazda stopped making their own trucks in 1994 and let Ford start doing it for them. I wish I still had that little red rascal!

Strength:

Very dependable. I have owned this truck since 1987 and have only had one problem, the automatic choke was sticking. Other than that I change the oil and put new tires on it and it runs. 150,000 miles

Weakness:

Have not found one yet.

I paid only $6500 for this new, it is a B2200 SE5 plus5 model. I can tell you that I have gotten my moneys worth out of this truck, I feel that it could go for 10 more years. The body has no rust and the engine is still strong. After this experiance I will buy another when the time comes.

Strength:

Great price, rides well, competent as a pickup

Weakness:

Doesn't seem to be terribly reliable (been in for warranty work a few times), and the 112-hp 4-cylinder engine could use about 30 more hp. Also, the interior is cramped.

I paid $10600 for a brand-new SE base cab, 2wd, 5spd, etc-came w/ AC, AM/FM/Cassette, bedliner, alloy wheels, etc. Great deal and (in my opinion) the best choice in compact pickups (although I don't know about the Frontier.) It hasn't been terribly reliable, but it's much better than other compacts, namely the GM and Dodge compact pickups, and is much more comfortable than the Tacoma and pre-1998 Nissan pickups.

Strength:

Exterior design with flared fenders is more interesting and has more standard equipment than its Ford counterpart. 4.0 Liter engine is quieter and has more low end torque than the 3.0 Liter. Roomier and more comfortable interior compared to Toyota Tacoma. Better build quality than Chevy S-10. Beats all compact trucks with its 4-doors. More for your money especially when they have low finance rate and rebate promotions.

Weakness:

Exterior cab has a more boxy look than what I prefer. There is some interior wind noise as a result of the 4 doors. Good handling but could have a smoother ride. Gas mileage could be improved - average 18 mpg combined.

Great compact truck value - paid $19,000 (included all standard and options equipment - power windows & doors, alarm, cd/cassette, air, bedliner, cruise, fog lights, leather wrapped steering wheel) and would recommend to anyone. Very reliable and easy to drive. Good hauler and extra doors make rear access extremely easy for loading and unloading items.

Strength:

Lot's of ground clearance, short wheel base, low rear-end gears, just the things you look for in a capable off-road vehicle. Great fuel mileage. Peppy 4 valves per cylinder 4-banger. Shift on the fly 4-wheel drive. Attractive exterior.

Weakness:

Cramped interior. Not much in the way of luxury features.

I really loved this truck. I bought it new in 1990 and owned it until the end of 1992. It was my first new vehicle purchase so I may be unduly influenced. I took it on a jeep jamboree and it kept up with all of the CJ's, Wranglers, and Cherokees in the Colorado Rockies. I had to trade it in when my son was born because a car-seat wouldn't work with the 5-speed in the Mazda. Traded it in on a 1993 Cherokee. I only had one mechanical problem which was covered under warranty and that was a blown headgasket at about 5k miles. I used to race a freind that owned a Honda Accord and always beat it off the line, kinda cheated by locking the hubs in for extra traction, but it was always great seeing that look of disbelief. Paid less than 10k for it which I felt at the time was a steal. This was the b-series that was actually made by Mazda and was before the rebadged rangers came along. So comparing to the newer b-series trucks might not be fair.

very Tough Truck my truck.

Weakness:

Small interior for leg room

Paid 14,200 I love the truck it's a very rugged truck and gets good gas mileage at 27. The only other thing is that I have a small car to drive in the winter because 2wd is very bad in snow. I came from the front wheel drive generation and it was very hard getting used to rear wheel drive in heavy rain, Snow ,Gravel Etc...

My(SE) came pre-wired for a trailer and a hitch ball for towing. Chevy(S-10) Does not pre-wire there truck for the same price at what I paid for mine.

Strength:

The truck is very dependable, I have owned it since it was new. At 215,000
miles I rebuilt the engine, it was time. I think since it was new its been
in the shop four or five times. I do most of my own work on it, whats nice
is they last a long time-long enough so you can "know what you own"
This truck has a 4-speed automatic in it, excellent trany. I had that unit
rebuilt @160,000 miles. Current 229,000 runs fantastic. I had a 1987
B2200, it was hit from behind at 55 miles per hour. My wife was at a red
light and my two boys were in the cab-plus seats, my wife suffered a back
injury and my youngest had a slight concusion. The mustang was just
history the driver did survive. My wife and kids drove the truck home
after the accident, I was amazed. So we traded that one in for the 88. So
yea, Iam very satisfied. Oh, its loaded heavy with tools/material always..

Weakness:

Its not a full size truck, so its a little smaller. The engine is not full
of endless power, um after owning this for 12 years thats about it.

I paid 15,000 something for this truck new. If you go back and look at
consumer reports in I think 1987/88, you should see some incredible
ratings. Now today, the new units look alot like a Ranger. Which is fine,
I just don't know how much influence Mazda has anymore on these trucks.
Enough said on that. If you find a B2200, and you are interested. Just
remember, if its used it may have been abused. Just like anything else
they have got to be taken care of. If You find a unit that has been
taken good care of, it should last a long time for you. Remember,
these units are not race cars. I have always found it so cool to arrive
at my destination, over and over again. Light loads or heavy loads, it has
always come through.

I would say its top rank when compared with other mini trucks. And you
need to remember, the mini trucks are getting more mid-size now. So if
compared you really need to compare these with other brands of the same
year.

Strength:

Good quality, inexpensive, excellent safety.

Weakness:

Mid-level engine was down on power with the 5spd.

I paid about 14000 for the truck brand new. It was very comfortable and had a pleasing ride quality for a truck. Felt a lot bigger than a compact truck and seemed to be quite durable.

Alas, I was involved in a frontal collision with it, which totaled the truck. Total velocity component would have been approx. 50 miles an hour to the front left side of the truck. The truck spun around several times and slid through a fence and into a ditch. The front end absorbed the brunt of the impact. I was seat belted and emerged with only a bruise on my arm. Very impressive. Acceleration leaves tons to be desired, however.

Identical to a Ford Ranger, with a Mazda plate. Mazda was cheaper but seemed better appointed. Good value, solid truck.

Strength:

Outside styling. Above average reliability.

Weakness:

Acceleration. Gas milage is not as high as hoped for. Also, the dealership purchased from will never see me again as they lied during purchase process.

Preferred the exterior design over the sister Domestic label truck, otherwise its the same. It has reasonable power for an automatic, but it still feels a little sluggish in comparison to a few other competitors. Overall, it serves its purpose (utility/commute) very well although it could use stronger acceleration.
