SL Extra cab shortbed 350 V8
Strength:
Power, handling(on and off road), looks!
Weakness:
Gas mileage, low ground clearance(but the lift kit and new tires, 33 inches, will fix that right up) This is a great truck. It has the 350 V8 which is never lacking for power, infact on snow, ice or mud it sometimes has too much power. 5 speed heavy duty manual tranmission. The low gear on this tranny requires the gas to even go down hill! Handles great off-road even with the small stock tires it has and the low ground clearance because of them. Lift kit and bigger tires are in the works. The extended cab has plenty of room for all of my friends, all of whom are big guys. Great hunting rig, gets you up into the mountains and back with no worries. I owned a 86 Ranger 4X4 before this truck and it was a great truck too but this one still bury''s it in every aspect. Strength:
VERY strong 350 V8. Some modifications have been done to make it more fun ride. Underdrive pulleys, performance chip, headers, 3 inch exhaust, removed tailgate, performer intake and cam, flipped over air cleaner lid w/ K&N make it a quick little truck. Faster than those little rice rockets out there at least...
Weakness:
Ugh.. Gas mileage. Probably due to my lead foot, but it sucks. The tranny has given out already (but its got 218k mles on it now)I hate, and I mean HATE the leaks. Oil, trans fluid, it sucks big time and is an embarassment to my neighborhood (Im in Johnson County, KS) I dont like how I have to constantly check my fluid levels to make sure Im in operating range. My 89 GMC is one of the best cars Ive ever owned. Its more reliable than the Mercury I had before, and is tough as nails. Quicker than snot, its a great truck to own. The sleeper value of a pick up is incredible. Similar Products Used: Mercury Cougar, Chevy Camaro (both 1991) were the only other cars Ive owned. I borrowed an 86 Pontiac Fiero from my friend for a month when I didnt have a car, and I loved that car too. |

Tough engine, comfortable cloth seats, nice overall look, smooth ride.
Weakness:
Since day one, there has been a thumping noise in the rear-end. I have taken it to the dealer four times, and still they tell me that it is a problem with the drive shaft, but no fix yet. To me this sounds like a lemon! I have sent a complaint and if I do not hear back soon, I will be hiring an lawyer. I am not going to sit back and let my warranty run out before they correct the problem. Overall, I like my truck. If I did not have a problem with the rear-end making a noice during takeoff, there would not be a problem. However, I am dissatified that I bought a new truck, and my older model was a heck of a lot better. I hope to have this issue resolved soon, or it''s bye bye GMC! Strength:
very fast, handles good, and comfortable and functional interior.
Weakness:
complete drivetrain purchased with 26 miles on it. At 3,000 miles the rear end blew. Dealership said it was not covered by warrenty, because of off-road abuse in my Z71 Off-Road. At the same time the axle went I told them second gear was slipping, and tranny fluid was smoked. They said it is fine, and changed the fluid. So now at 6,000 miles my tranny is totally junk. It could be a good truck for some people, but not for what I need it for Similar Products Used: 1984 chevy blazer,1984 ford ranger, and 1988 chevy S-10 |

Strength:
Great Power, ran 15.65 quarter mile, bone stock!! Decent milage for it''s size (about 15MPG, if you can control yourself) Nice ride, pretty quiet. Lots of room, comfy seats. Looks great!
Weakness:
Weak, sad stereo, try to find one without it, asd stick your own in! Dash is made of very hard plastic, like a trash can I have. Almost indestructible, but feels cheap and is too hard, so it''s noisy. Tranny weirdness. Originally, I was going to buy a Tahoe or a Yukon, but they were just too much, so, after checking out the Ford F150 (dopey looks, Ford weirdness), and the Dodge Ram, I decided it would be one of the GM fullsize trucks. I liked the Chevy''s looks better, but the selection at the local dealers was horrible, so I went ot the local GMC dealer, and a couple of hours later, had made the deal to buy my truck. A year and a half later, I have to say, I like it better than ANYTHING I have ever owned! It''s fast, rides nice, and has been, for the most part, trouble free. No, it''s not perfect, it has a HORRIBLE stereo, GM should be ashamed to even put it in there! A $150 head unit you can buy anywhere will be a huge improvement. Good luck trying to find one without the CD/AM/FM, and some have the cassette tacked on too. Problems have been/are: Ticking on cold startup (common) Rear windows leaked air slightly (fixed soon after I bought it). Transmission has a delay in going into gear after backing out of a parking place. (They tried to fix it, but they only made it less frequent). Common. One of the keyless entry remotes died suddenly, and was replaced when I went in for the next oil change. It''s a pleasure to drive, but parking, well, that goes with the size of it! Sierra styling is second to none, 5.3 works great with lots of power, ride, handling and braking are like a car.

What is with the GM 4x4 tranny? 10,000km and the rear end clunks from take off . . . second GM truck with this problem. Sometimes clunks when coming to a stop. Dealer says 4x4 grind is normal?? Love the styling, power, ride and handling. Interior is roomy, suicide doors are great for the kids. Hate the "clunk" in the rear end and grinding while in 4 wheel drive. Front bumber rusting in the middle under the grill. Noticed that it is not fully chromed. Newer models are. Engine is noisy when started sounds like a lifter. Either tranny or rearend slipping. It happened to me twice right after I bought it. Happens from a stop. Truck only has about 5000 miles left on the warranty. Im pretty nervous about the future. I just bought the truck in October and have already had to take it in. Similar Products Used: 1990 GMC Sierra SLT. Great Truck |

Strength:
Quiet, strong, plenty of power, good overall quality feel.
Weakness:
Brakes pedal fade during moderate to heavy situations. Always stops, but the pedal almost goes to the floor. Dealer says the brakes work as designed - I doubt that the GM engineers expected them to perform as poorly as mine do. Leather bucket seats are not holding up well at all. Drivers seat back has about an 1" of motion, which dealer is working on. With 18 months and 24,000 miles on the truck, I have been very satisfied. The truck looks great, handles great, always gets better than 17 MPG, with 20+ MPG possible on the hiway. Quiet, comfortable and dependable. Handles heavy loads with ease. The original Firestones were trash, but they are now gone, due to the squeal and poor wet weather traction. I would like to see heavier/stronger bed panels (front panel near cab appears to be easily damaged). Engine and 4WD have been flawless.
