Strength:

1. reliability. only problems ever: was at a hose that connects the radiator to the coolant thing ($5). tires (understandably so) $240. a new battery ($30). and that is all!! no kidding!! just change my oil every 3000 miles (doesn't even burn any oil either) and check the oil and coolant once every other week and i'm good to go. 2. gas mileage - four bangers are so weak, however with a/c on and everything i still get 24 mpg.

Weakness:

few minor cons: 1. weak!!! then again, it's a 4 banger. 2. electrical problems. dome light would stay on intermittently (however, a spray of wd40 in the door jams fixed it) 3. seat belt buckle is jammed. have to use the middle buckle. 4. in all honesty, that's it.

researching used cars around the $4k price range on this site, decided on this truck because: 1. ford is pretty damn reliable. 2. trucks are fun. 3. let's face it, you can't get really fun cars to drive at my price range. bought it with 101k, had it a lil over 2 years and now i have 155k. i drive in the city (la traffic) and on the open roads (pch up the coast) all the time!! it's a commuter car, daily driver, everything.

The cab is relatively small, but not small enough to become a big issue with me.

Strength:

FX4/LevelII package looks great Simple controls Spacious for a small truck

Weakness:

Fuel economy could be better Vanity mirrors would be nice for my wife Temperature control tends to favor heat

The new extended cab Ranger gives you the utility of a truck, conviences of a car, at an afforable price. These days trucks are getting bigger and bigger, but what about those who aren't pulling trailers, hualing heavy loads, or need to compensate for other things by having a large truck. The Ranger is for you! The 4.0L V6 gives you the power to tackle any job within the boundaries of the trucks size. Interior is very nice with simple controls located right where you need them. No 6-in-1 turn signal switches to make things difficult. Ford kept this truck straight forward and simple with a touch of class in design. The FX4/LevelII off-road package adds that extra kick of bravado that most of us look for in all trucks. The new remodeling of the Ranger has never looked better, seems like Ford is really hearing what the people want. 4-door extended cab and CD player make us rethink the advantages of a car. Granted, the extended cab space doesn't move the Ranger into a "sedan" package, but it provides enough room for shopping or 2 extra spaces for impromptu guests. I haven't had mine long but I'm already starting to see my research paid off. You won't be disappointe with this truck.

Model Reviewed: Ranger 2.3 STD cab

Strength:

Reliable, reliable, comfortable, the most indestructable truck ive seen

Weakness:

ummmm, errrr, okay, okay, the 2.3 is a little weak. Still pulls my Sea-Doo though....

This truck is amazing. I have had it since 2001, bought it for $4000 with 34,000 miles on it. Short for some body work (the bed rails rusted kinda bad....sat outside for a while), the only work that had to be done was when the alternator spun a bearing last week. It now has 63,000 miles on it, so 30,000 problem free miles is no big deal. I love my ranger, and me being a bigger person, 6'2" 225 pounds, i fit well in here, and find it very comfortable. Me and my buddy drove it down to Florida and were in good comfort the whole way. I reccomend it to anyone looking to own a problem free truck for a great price.

Strength:

nearly industructable.

Weakness:

ext. part is really small.

My grandpa bought this truck brand new. i dont know how many miles he drove it but when he passed away, my dad took over ownership. my dad has anger problems and took them all out on the truck. when my brother turned 16, he was given the truck. he also took his anger out on it, he also is just a bad driver. I was given the truck about a year ago and it drives as smoothe as my brothers '98 ranger. although it has more dents and rust in it because of people taking poor care of it, it is still a very reliable and comfortable truck.

cant beat it, they just keep going

Weakness:

not enough power from the 2.3 to pull a car trailer

i have had my ranger for 6 years. i have beat and abused this truck like no other. i have hauled cars with it on the original bumper hitch. the only thing i have ever needed to do to this truck was routine stuff shuch as oil changes and brakes. the rear end oil has never been changed and it is on the second set of spark plugs in the 2.3 engine. i did put a clutch in it, starter and one battery. everything else is original including the alt. with 210,000 miles on it. i have never seen a small truck take such abuse. i treat it like a 3/4 ton and it comes back for more. i will never buy another truck unles it is a ford. i am a life time ranger buyer that is for sure. you cant find a better truck.

Strength:

112 Hp from a Torquey 4 Cyl. Fuel Economy Parts are cheap-Generally Indestructable

Weakness:

A little tight for the bigger folks. Ok, fat people, don't buy this truck. The 5-Speed is a tad notchy. I have had the whole Dome light/Dinger problem. The silicon on the door latch fix worked like a charm though.

I bought my 95 Ext. Cab in 97 with just 5,000 ticks on the clock and it was in "Brand new" condition. I bought a Standard Cab brand new in 93 and loved it but had to sell it after just a year and 25,000 mi. I knew that the Ranger was the truck for me so when it came time to bye again I found my 95. I like the extra room from the Ext. Cab, but it's pretty useless (not to mention very unsafe) to sit anyone in the back. I have the 2.3 4 Cyl.with the 5-speed and it's been a jewel. I have 87,000 miles on the truck now and I kid you not I haven't done a thing but routine maintenance. I change the oil at 2,500 mi. and the truck has yet to use a drop. I have put 2 sets of tires on it (finally found a set to go more than 30,000)and I changed the plugs, serpentine belt and rear-end grease at 50,000. And you won't probably believe this part but this truck has the same battery that it rolled off the assembly line with in Sept. 1994. That has to be a record. I was going to replace the battery last year but I decided to see how long it will last. One thing is certain, when it comes time to replace that battery, nothing but a Motorcraft will do. I also couldn't believe it but the front brakes didn't go until 71,000. And I still have the original rear ones. And before you start thinking I baby this thing...I routinely pull a 2,500 lb. trailer (yeah I know the manual says 1,800 is it for my truck) and I have severely overloaded that thing so many times that I've probably scraped an inch off of the mud flaps. All in all this is the best truck I have ever owned bar none! Everything feels as tight as the day I drove it for the first time and I will be driving this truck 5 years from now without a doubt...maybe longer. And for what it's worth, I am a Deputy Sheriff and I respond to traffic accidents on a daily basis. There is not another small to mid-size truck that fares better in any kind of accident than a Ranger. They do exceptionally well at frontal impacts. I saw one that hit a mid 90's Chevy Full size head on with both of them going in the 40 MPH range. The Chevy occupants lived, but were injured severely. The Ranger's occupants were treated on scene and "walked away". They were sore as hell but that passenger compartment was not compromised one bit. If you are in the market for a truck (new or used). Have a look at a Ranger. They are so economical and cheap to buy (used anyway). I get 390 miles on an 18 gal. tank for what thats worth. E-Mail me if you have questions/comments.

Model Reviewed: Ranger XLT Extended Cab

Strength:

Almost indestructable. Outstanding repair record. Great vehicle for general use. Comfortable.

Weakness:

Not good with a boat trailer in a muddy launch. 6'3" kids don't fit too well in the "back seat."

93, 2WD, 5speed manual, extended cab, 4L V6. Best vehicle I've ever owned. Tried to sell it and, fortunately, no one would make a serious offer. Purchased used (<6k mi) almost 10 years ago. Other than standard wearout parts, the repair history has been (1) starter fell off (really), (2) replaced rear axle at 100k (3) rear brake lines rusted out at 9 years (4) front ball joint at 100k miles. The truck has developed an oil leak but does not require oil between 4k mile oil changes. It has a comfortable ride, great little hauler. Gas mileage is 22-25 hwy, 18 city and 15 towing. Had it 8 years in Michigan and no rust except for brake lines. Body has survived dents and scratches from hauling Boy Scout equipment. Have a dent from the truck sliding sideways into a tree when the ice started melting. This is by far the best vehicle I've ever owned. The only weakness was a tendency to get stuck in unimproved boat launches (a problem with 2WD p/u trucks). Otherwise great in the snow and mud. The rear axle problem was my fault, I buried it in a launch, got the rear end under water and didn't change the rear differential oil. I looked at the new (2000) 4WD rangers and didn't like them as much as the 93. With all the scratches and dents, it isn't the best looker on the block, but I would get in it and drive it anywhere and to do almost anything. Bought an Isuzu Rodeo (great truck) to solve the boat launch problem. Would probably keep the Ranger if I had to make a choice between it and my camry or rodeo.

Model Reviewed: ranger edge

Strength:

smooth ride, stereo, edge package (higher stance), it is a v-6, power everything, real good a/c, nice automatic tranny, breaks.

Weakness:

not the most powerfil v-6 ever, v-8 fuel comsumption (15 mpg city) even though it is a "compact truck" it still is a little hard to park. it is a "peg leg" all the power goes only to 1 wheel in the rear (easily fixed by getting a posi rear end)

I wanted a truck. I looked at either the ranger or the tacoma. they are both about the same price (+-1500 or so) first i drove the tacoma and it was nice but it didn't have too many features i.e. power windows and door locks but it sure did have real good build quality and was solid as a rock. then i want out on a whim and drove the ranger and i was suprised! it had no rattles and power everything. it came with a 3.0 engine, cd am/fm mp3,power windows, power door locks, fog lights, power mirrors, and in x-tra cab. plus it had the "edge" stance which is the 4x4 suspension if i wanted a tacoma like that i know i would of payed at least $18,000.
