Defects not covered by recall can affect life of engine. I have driven this Ford Ranger for 5 years now. I noticed the oil pressure dropping off to zero a couple times and wanted to change oil pump. I used engine puller to raise engine and remove oil pump and pan, to my surprise there was a black rubber like substance clogging my oil intake screen to oil pump. I removed all foreign matter from screen cleaned intake tube and pan then re-installed all components (original pump included) Started engine and gauge shows full oil pressure, researched same on internet and was surprised to discover that Ford themselves knew the original oil pan gasket was clogging these intakes up and did not recall, there was a couple of technical service bulletins released on this subject but no recall. Needless to say I lodged a complaint with Ford and will be bringing the rubber material in to a local dealer to find out what recourse I have for upper engine repairs. It is a shame a good engine like this could be destroyed by a glaring oversight on Ford''''s part. Even if you change yor oil every 2000 miles there will be untold damage done to the top end of your engine from not receiving the proper lubrication as the clogging progresses (as clogging reaches the stage that it shows up on gauge you may only have a small % of the designed oil volume reaching cam and valves on top of engine, heard any clicking lately? . There are a couple of fixes on the internet that could work without raising the engine but I don''''t recommend any (do it right). What we need is for Ford to acknowledge the problem and quit charging people for their mistake....by the way, if you bring it in to the dealerships they will just replace the oil pump and never tell you it was a clogged screen. This I is a shame, So I will ask that 1990-1992 4 cyl. 2.3 owners ask your dealer about this and post the responses here. (it is about 800-1000 dollars for the dealer to rectify a problem created by Ford''''s original gasket material, I know two people who have already had to pay this, and I found out too late to help them) Also check out a couple similar stories on the internet concerning this same issue. Don''''t get me wrong I love the truck, it''''s the handling of a problem Ford knew existed. I will post when I find out what Ford''''s response is to this issue. I hope this is not my last Ford! P.S. Glad I saved the gasket material removed from scre Similar Products Used: 1988 ford ranger, 1983 E-150 Econoline van 1980 F-150 pickup, 1977 F-150 pickup |

Looks good and rides good. Lots of equipment at a reasonable price.
Weakness:
Engine power. This is engine is cabable of at least 200 hp but is only rated at around 150 hp. Overall seems to be a good truck. The 3.0 is whinny and short of power. The room in the cab is great. I am concerned about the drivetrain (engine & auto transmission). Seems to be lacking in this area. great handling, good in 4x4 conditions, good power for small engine
Weakness:
Not enough room under hood when working on engine, exaust rust. Hard to find certain aftermarket parts I bought my Ranger wrecked from a coal company a loader hit it. A few body panels and some paint and I had myself a great truck. It has a 2.9 V6 and runs great. Put the right set of tires on it and it can handle as good as most cars. It even runs with a 4.0. I''ve never had any major problems with it. Ive tried and havent had it stuck yet. for such a little engine it goes great. Regretably the police know this to. The engine is still stock (hopefully not for long). 127,000 miles and its still going good. It''ll haul alot, a 3 ton boat (didnt have to pull very far though), a 3/4 ton Dodge diesel. Or lots in the 7'' foot bed. i have a tonneau cover and it will hold a lot under there. I have no big complaints about my truck and would recommend one to anyone. Great looking truck, and I get a lot of time to look. Becouse if its not in the shop , its dead in the drive way, waiting for the tow truck!
Weakness:
Very poor quality.Gas miledge is a joke. Dont fell comfortable or safe in this truck.Never quite sure if I am going to get stranded or not. This is my second Ranger. I didnt have nearly as many problems with my 99 as I do with my 2001.Since the day I drove It off the lot. I have become very good friends with the service manager at fiesta ford. Lets see the laundry list of problems , are. Have had the brain replaced three times, the breaks and rotors replaced twice the power window motor and drive belt on the drivers side changed out twice. The battery replaced, the transmision repaired once, and replaced once. the seat belt''s replaced the plastic trim runners on the bed replaced.the air compressor replaced, and at least four times have had to have the tires balanced ,aligned and rotated becouse they are cuping, and wearing out for some unknown reason. I think that my little ranger was either built on a Monday,or friday. And last but not least the gas miledge is so bad I would thought that this truck had a big block V/8 under the hood. Great looks, Excellent in the snow.
Weakness:
Ride quality sucks, brakes suck, 3.0L Engine is underpowered. Un-reliable. Ford customer service is terrible. Made by over paid Union workers that don''t work for their money. Buy A car or truck from Honda or Toyota the are much better. Truck ran good until the warranty went out then the leaf springs broke, a month later the front brakes locked up while driving down the road. 3 weeks after that lost all oil pressure. I have taken excellent care of this truck never did any towing or heavy hauling. Ford cusotmer service sucks. Similar Products Used: 1995 Mazda B-2200 |

Roomy cab, good looking truck
Weakness:
Everything mechanical, mileage is BAD, service is BAD, too low for off road This is a lemon! I have 29000 kms. on the truck. Had to have driveshaft replaced, rear transfer case output seal, front pinion seal, all 5 tires (firestone recall), seatbelt buckle recall. Latest one is front brakes freeze up and lock. Ford tells me to put it in 4X4 until they break free. That''s handy in the winter. Rear speakers were replaced after a few weeks. Their is fluid all over the engine compartment. They say this is normal sweat from the battery and brake fluid reservoir. Yeah right. This truck has honestly been nothing but trouble. I will never buy another Ford as long as I live. Their service is awful. They have an excuse for everything instead of just fixing it. Similar Products Used: 2000 Chevy S-10 |

Looks, standard equipment better than many competitors, comfort, handling.
Weakness:
Not great mileage, and four cylinder/automatic combo is not good. It''s a great truck and I have few complaints. I only wish I had bought the V-6. The 2.5 four cylinder is lacking quite a few horsepower and doesn''t get good enough mileage to make up for it. Other than that, its a great little truck and I love it.
