/Ranger XLT 4-door, 4X4
Strength:
4 wheeled drive works well even over rocks, Good for towing small vehicles or trailers.
Weakness:
Engine power, Brakes overheat easily, gas mileage, Engine noise (lifters). Not enough power on the road. Always trouble with MAF even in a 95 ranger I used to own. It's looks are good, handling is good, better with oversized tires. Fuel mileage is low, same as having a V8 but without the power. Brakes are fair, but don't work well off road if used a lot. Strength:
Reliability, great engine that will last a long time when driven properlly
Weakness:
accelaration is not all that great, paint jobs on ford's are not very good. i have owned three vehicles since I received my license. 1) 1991 ford ranger 2) toyota tercel 3) ford ranger. Very reliable pickup, fair gas mileage, minimum maintenance, great looking comfortable vehicle. Similar Products Used: Toyota tacoma, Dodge Dakota |

Strength:
Smooth ride; reliable; good gas mileage; no leaks
Weakness:
fishtails way too easily (but I guess any compact truck will do that); manual transmission sometimes has trouble going into gear I have had my Ranger for almost 2 years now. It had 92K when I got it and has 101K now. The only maintainance I've had to do is replace a bad fuse. The accelleration isn't great, but still better than I expected for a 2.3 liter engine, and the gas mileage (mid 20's in town) is about as good as it gets in a pickup. Ford Ranger
Strength:
Great 4WD,(auto locking hubs and electric.)It won't let you put it into 4WDL unless you are stopped, which keeps you from messing things up. Very reliable.
Weakness:
The shifter is a little notchy, but what do you expect, it is a truck. Blew out the oil pressure sending unit on the interstate one time, but I fixed it for $5.00, is just scared me to see the oil gauge drop to nill. I have a 1996 Ranger Super Cab. It is the 3.0L V6, 4WD. It is a 5 speed manual. It is a fun truck. It has great AC, and drives well on the interstate, but is still really fun to take off road. I have NEVER gotten it stuck, even when my friends in much bigger trucks were stuck. I had to pull a friend out one time who had done all kinds of things to his Z 71. It was so funny to see my truck pulling out a huge chevy. I wish I had a camera. It has been a blast to drive. Similar Products Used: 1986 Toyota Truck 4WD |

Ranger 4cyl. 5 speed XLT
Strength:
Awesome looking (flareside, chrome wheels) Pretty peppy around town, good factory sound system, good mileage with a bed cover, hauls alot for a four cylinder. Definitely better looking and "truckier" than the Chevy
Weakness:
First major problem that bothers me: I have pretty bad rust starting under the passenger door and tailgate, about half way through. I keep the truck spotless (I'm manager at a car wash), and feel that a 3 year old truck shouldn't be rusting out (although I'm not sure how the previous owner took care of it) I've done a "fix-it-yourself" job on it about a year ago and it's holding up so far. I've had emissions parts replaced already-free of charge, of course Mass air flow sensor went out, rendering the truck completely undrivable. Parking brake will stick in the winter, leaving me stranded. Enging pings like crazy!!! Especially if I run the recommended 87, and not 89 octane. Maybe I'll take it in for that.... I bought the truck with about 40,000 miles on it and am now just over 60,000. I am still in love with it. Few minor problems (see below), but I feel it has been a great value. Yes, it is a little lethargic getting on the expressway, but if you want speed, don't buy the 4 cyl- that should be a given. A K&N air filter will help, along with street tires. Ranger XLT Supercab 4x4 4.0L V6
Strength:
Very sharp looking. I've got the Island Blue paint that turns heads everywhere. The 4.0 Liter V6 with a 5 speed manual tranny. I'm sure the auto is fine as well, but I LOVE the manual. I had one on my old '89 Bronco and that thing kicked major arse. I've taken this thing off-road a few times and it is a tank. My buddy followed me in his Dakota and he got stuck in a spot where my Ranger breezed right through. The service at my dealer (Patchogue Ford in Patchogue, NY) has been excellent. My father bought the Bronco new from them in '89 and they treated him well, so I stayed loyal.
Weakness:
Gas mileage could be better, but hey it's a truck. Also, I wish the Supercab had a little more room in the back. I bought the XLT Supercab 4x4 with the 4.0L V6. It came with all of the features that the FX4 has except for the BF Goodrich tires. Let me say one thing about my Ranger......THIS TRUCK IS AWESOME! I did extensive research on the compact pickups before choosing one. I test drove a Dodge Dakota, Toyota Tacoma and Chevy S10 before looking at the Ranger (I like the more traditional looking trucks, so I didn't even bother with the Nissan Frontier.). I was pretty much sold on a Tacoma when I saw a Ranger on the road. The truck looked pretty sharp and so I decided to take a look at one. As soon as I stepped into the truck and started driving it, I was sold. This thing feels like a real truck. The S10 was a P.O.S. in my opinion, the Dakota was nice, but nothing special, and the Tacoma drove like my Honda Civic. There's no contest....the Ranger is tops. Similar Products Used: '89 Bronco - My dad bought it new, drove it for 10 years without a problem and then gave it to me. Great truck, but it was starting to wear down at 180,000 miles. Ranger/XLT
Strength:
Has been very dependable requiring little or no maintenance up to 100K miles. Considering the miles and years I consider the clutch repair, air conditioner going out, water hoses, brake cylinder to be expected. Presently, I am spending less than $800 a year on engine maintenance; though my husband does most repairs, except for clutch. I think for a vehicle this old that's excellent. good. Still a stylish looking truck for it's age, Last year I found a note on my windshield asking if I was considering selling it.
Weakness:
no cup holder Changing the oil and plugs yourself is kind of tough, placement of the rear right spart plug is nearly impossible to reach. Underbody has shown a lot of rust, metal housing that the coil spring and shock attach to has rusted through, and other areas look questionable, probably my fault though since I have not been religious about washing road salt from the areas. Being a truck, it is not necessarily the most comfortable ride on a long trip, compared to a car This was only my second vehicle, previously I drove a Ford Escort. I wanted a truck for all the moving I was doing at the time and it needed to be dependable, unlike my Escort. And I thought the Ranger was awfully cute. Similar Products Used: none |

Ford Ranger 2wd
Strength:
Always started and was ready to go. With oversized rear tires and weight in the bed, it did well in the snow. Handling and ride improved with up grade in shocks.
Weakness:
I have had 2 rangers and had front break problems with both. Need power! Gave excellent service for what it was. Put over 178000 miles on it. Has the 2.3, and it was a little week but I did not expect a lot more. Had a hesitation in it from day one but I learned to live with it, no one seem to be able to corret it. Strength:
Durable 96k miles and going strong
Weakness:
None I bought this truck with 54k miles on it and have since put about $3k towards maintaining it. The U-joint on the drivetrain froze (which was fun), the a/c no longer works, but other than that the rest has just been minor things like brakes. I really have liked this truck and would consider buying another one like it. Similar Products Used: 81 Civic Hatchback 85 Mercury Topaz 91 Taurus |

Strength:
None. Absolutely none. Wretched engineering, terrible workmanship, dealer was not honest with me, service department was poor.
Weakness:
It's a ford. This ranger was the worst vehicle I've ever owned. Bought it new hoping to avoid getting a lemon but it was nothing but problems and was a lemon anyway. You could dent the paint with your thumbnail when it was new. The A/C was a joke. The check engine light came on at 1300 miles, the steering gearbox disentegrated, radiator leaked, seats rattled, interior creaked, back window fell out, engine ran rough all the time, the brakes felt "crunchy," and on and on. The center arm rest snapped off (all plastic--built ford tough?? yeah, right!!) When I called the dealer about the arm rest they asked me if I put my kids on it. No, no kids. Then did I put my groceries on it? No, no groceries, no kids, I put MY ARM on it and in true ford fashion if snapped like a twig. Not covered under warratny of course. Remember we're not talking about a 15 year old truck, this is all within a period of 3 years after buying it new. It was in the shop an average of once every 2 months. I traded this complete p.o.c. in at 44k miles. I couldn't afFORD to keep it past the extended warranty. I recently ran a CarFax check on it and found that while it now has 100K miles on it, it was bought and sold FIVE times after I dumped it. Nobody else wants to keep it either. Replaced with a new 1996 Chevy S10 and the Chevy has been great, no problems. Still have the Chevy and as soon as I sell my wife's old tempo I'll have finally rid myself of all fords. No more fords! YEAH! Similar Products Used: S10--far better truck. Far, FAR better truck. |
