Ranger
Strength:
Great looks, higher riding and very quiet. Easy to park with a very comfortable interior. 4.1 LTR overhead cam engine supplys plenty of power.
Weakness:
Clichy "check engine light" which has been replaced once..and will be again. Sluggish oil gage. Unless you are transporting small children, rear jump seats are useless and take up valuable storage space. Gas mileage is so so. I purchased my 2002 Ford Ranger XLT Super Cab in December of 2001. My previous 1987 Ranger XLT decided it was time to quit. I had such great luck with the "87" (14 years of service)I decided to go with the Ranger again. So far I haven't been disappointed. Power, reliability!!!
Weakness:
Only one so far small gas tank. I purchased the truck in 99 with 11,000 miles on it. It is a fully loaded short bed/short cab. Rare with a 4.0lL V6. Mated to a 5 speed standard makes the truck fun to drive and excellent to tow a trailer with multiple ATVs on board. I now have 70,000 miles on it. I grew up in a GM family but after multiple bad experiences including an S10, I gave Ford a try. Bye, bye GM. Similar Products Used: S10 |

Ranger XLT FX4
Strength:
Good looks, cheap price compared to others, good power for a V6, fairly smooth ride, 6 cup holders!
Weakness:
Poor poor gas mileage, poor quality and workmanship during assembly, premature rust on frame and under body, front tires rub the frame/sway bar, loud on highway, rear doors are a joke, seem like a last minute thought, low resale, very sluggish automatic trany, always wants to shift too soon and boggs itself down, limited slip rear axle has very little lockup, steering wheel creeks & cracks feels like its loose but is supossed to be normal for a Ford? Rear seats are really big enough only for kids, not enough room for adults....... I know this is a long post, but if you are going to buy a Ranger please read. I have to say that I have been very disappointed with this truck. I shopped around for a while and then based my purchase on overall price. Ford definitely has the lowest on the market, but as I found out there is a reason for this. The quality of this truck was very poor. Right from the factory it was missing the front skid plate, and also bolts in the tailgate. Who knows what else!? Also right from the factory the alignment was way-out, the truck pulled hard to the right. It turned out that one of the front torsion bars was not adjusted properly and caused the truck to not sit level. During the past year there has been allot of things go wrong with the truck, it spark knocks like crazy on hills, driving light burnt out on the first week, Airbag light came on, brought it in said it was fixed, then came on the next day, brought it in they said it was fixed, and came on again. I think that they must of taken out the bulb to get it to stop coming on. Rear doors rattle like crazy and have to be slammed very hard to get closed tight. If they are not closed tight then the front door contacts the rear and chips the paint. Rocker panels looked like they had been sand blasted only after a few weeks of use, small rust spots could be found on a few different areas. But my biggest beef over all has to be gas mileage, I can't believe how poor it is. With the current technology we have today there is no need of a vehicle burning that much gas. I am lucky to get 400km's (280miles) out of a tank, Appx 16-17mi/gal at best with mostly highway driving. I have used full size trucks that get better than that. You would expect a smaller truck would get better mileage!? Not the case. If your looking at this type of truck consider that for the around the same money you could get into a full size truck and not only get a little better gas mileage but also have a full size box and a lot more towing capacity. I am now in the process of selling the truck and can't wait to part ways with it. |

The 3.0 is kind of a dog,I would of liked the 4.0 in there alot better.Lots of blind spots in the cab area. Has not given me any problems yet, runs ok for a 3.0.Also the EDGE package gives it a nice look. Similar Products Used: Ford F-250,and Toyota 4x4. |

i like the handling on and off the road and it crusis nicly at higher speeds. It also seems no matter what i put it through off road it wont quit and keeps going.
Weakness:
I,ve had the truck about 4 months and had it in for mantence for at least 6 times. it seems all the computer sensors are going bad.The first time i took it off road the factory skid plate came off. i like the looks and the hadaling of my truck, but it seems like ford cut costs in the wrong places. Great torque curve Extra Cab doors on both sides Reliablility Styling Size Driving ease
Weakness:
Gas Mileage, Interior door handle plastic is poor quality. Purchased my Ranger after leasing it for 3 years. XLT model with auto and all the goodies is a really comfortable ride on the highways yet can get into places much bigger trucks can't. I have 35K on the odometer and the only trouble I've had is a wiper switch that was replaced because it kept coming on without warning. Had quite a bad time with the whole Firestone tire fiasco but once the tires were replaced by Ford I was okay with that. I would like better fuel economy but I didn't buy it for the economy, I like the torquey power of the 4.0. Similar Products Used: GMC S-15. Ford is much better, sorry GM. |

Strength:
My truck took a beating and handled it well. The 4.0 V6 is very strong and the truck handled very well in deep snow and offroad conditions. Very visually appealing. A stoplight break stand now and then really got peoples attention!!!
Weakness:
Gas mileage is only fair at 16 to 17mpg. But hey, its a truck and I beat on it. I wanted to have a V8 under the hood, but the 4.0 V6 was more than adequate. I picked up my XLT SC 4x4 OFFROAD with 4.0 V6 on a 2 year lease. This was quite the upgrade from the 4cyl. 5 speed I had leased previously, although that was a great one too. With all the options on the new truck, It was like heaven. I had no problems with it the entire lease. I loved it so much, I decided to lease another new one for 2003!! Thumbs up for the FORD RED CARPET LEASE PROGRAM!!! Similar Products Used: I have always driven new Rangers and I will until the day I can't drive!! |
