Strength:

Quiet, manageable ride, good power and looks, My wife drives this mostly and she loves it.

Weakness:

Windows strain to roll down when barely dirty, interior carpet could be a little more wear resistant, stock stereo (like in most vehicles) sub-par.

Overall the F-150 is a nice ride with great car-like features and ride (but STILL a truck at heart). Depsite some small manufactirung annoyances (see weaknesses), there is a reason why the F-150 is the #1 tuck around.

Strength:

Ride height, handling, seating and interior great. Throttle response is very good. Excellent low end torque. Can't beat the ride on a smooth road. On rough roads, a little bumppy ride but that is what I would expect. Pulling heavy trailers or loads in the bed is no problem. Excellent handling under load or not. Love the sound system. Love the extra space behind the regular cab, the compartments, etc.

Weakness:

Gas milage is sucks, but it is a BIG truck. Looking into adding a K&N filter and dual exhaust. AC condensation drips on exhaust when stopping - sounds like firecrackers going off. Also been in the shop twice for noisey belt or pulley's - still not fixed. Sounds like a deisel in the mornings. The automatic spends alot of time hunting - I've got where turn off the overdrive. Why is the cd changer behind the seat? Can't reach it without stopping and moving the seat - it is a regular cab.

Paid $300 over invoice (based on prices found on internet and invoice at the dealership). This is the 3rd ford truck in our family. So far this is the only one we have NOT had major problems with. The Expedition has been in the shop 8 or so times (transmission and rear window wiper motors (4)). The 99 F150 is having the 5.4 motor replaced at 13k miles - started knocking. Also had 1 transmission problem fixed. Overall, we love our Fords and would recommend them - and would recommend buying the extended warranty.

Strength:

At 6'6", the first thing I liked was the cab's roominess. The extended cab has lots of room for gear. The flip up rear seat was a great idea. Good ride -- smooth and comfortable. Standard bed is plenty big. Well thought out amenities on XLT package.

Weakness:

Mileage (expected), but I did get 19.5 mpg on a recent trip.

Bought it used and like it. Added a sprayed in liner which has done well so far. Best selling vehicle in the country -- it's easy to see why.

Strength:

Very roomy and dependable, although I've only had my truck 6 months my father has owned 3 or 4 and they have been excellent in the long run

Weakness:

I would strongly recommend the V8, I have the V6 and although it has a good bit of power-more would definatly be better. I'd get the 4X4 too, you'll wish you had later.

I got a great deal (under 18K) for a truck that was loaded with an extended cab. I would definatly recommend a ford truck-you don't get any better. don't get black though like I did because you CAN'T KEEP IT CLEAN!!!

Model Reviewed: S/C 4X4 w/5.4V8

Strength:

Almost everything--Power, looks, ride, driver position, off road capability, powertrain smoothness.

Weakness:

only one--gas mileage--average around 15-16

My Off-Road Package equipped F-150 S/C 4x4 is absolutely the best truck on the road. Power, in my opinion, is one of the most important aspects of a vehichle, and the 5.4V8 certainly delivers. At stoplights, I have had numerous Chevy 5.7s and Dodge 5.9s challenge me, only to be found in my rear view mirror. I also have a friend with a '99 Chevy 5.3 (S/C 4x4) who thought he could beat me in the quarter mile. At the end of the quarter, I was more than four car lengths ahead and still pulling away. The engine is absolutely great-and I can't stress that enough--it pulls very strong right off of idle (350lb/ft@2300rpm) all the way through the powerband. It is also a demon when it comes to passing, the power is always there when you need it. If you want a truck with 0-60 and quarter mile performance that will outrun everything in its class, not to mention most trucks outside its class and many sport sedans, buy yourself an F-150 with the 5.4
My truck has superb handling with great off-road capability(mud, steep hillclimbing, slow speed crawling,etc.). Those of you who like to play in the mud know how much stress can be put on a truck when you are in deep mud with the throttle to the floor. Let me attest to the ability of these trucks in the goo. I have already had this truck stuck once, but it put up an amazing fight--I swerved to avoid a deer one night and found myself in a slighlty sloping, wide ditch on the side of the road. Knowing that it had just rained 2 inches, I threw it in 4hi and put the throttle to the floor--I made it more than 250 feet down the middle of this ditch(crawling @5mph I might add) before I came to a hault. Later, looking at my ruts and the wheels and tires(stock) of my truck, my jaw dropped. I found that the ruts I left were more than 13 inches deep on both sides, with drag marks left by my rear axle and front differential. Truly a great feat acccomplished by my truck considering it happened with stock all terrain tires.
The fit and finish of my truck is truly top notch, no squeaks or rattles, just a very solid, well built truck. I have had absolutely no reliability problems with the exception of a brake squeak at 2 months, which was attributed to a defective break pad, and was promptly replaced by Ford. If you are looking for a truck with oustanding power, toughness, reliability, a smooth ride, and head-turning looks, this is the truck. I consider this truck well-worth the $27,900 sticker price

Model Reviewed: Ford F-150

Strength:

I like it's power, and just the fact of driving a truck

Weakness:

It's styling reminds me of a car, horrendous gas mileage, and it has the bad reputation of a being a Ford (Fix-Or-Repair-Daily). I have already had to replace both the driver and passenger windows because they both broke while trying to go up. How often does that happen? And ofcourse, my warranty had just expired. Poor acceleration as well. It lacks in power for the standard engine in comparison to GM trucks (okay, all other trucks).

I would absolutely never recommend it. I suppose if you like trucks that have a bad reputation, poor acceleration, look like a car and drive like a GMC Sonoma (or something smaller) then this is the truck for you. But if you want a real truck go GM. Don't make the same mistake and buy an expensive truck just to have it betray you.

Model Reviewed: Lariat 4x4

Strength:

Great interior functionality and looks. Sits considerably
higher than most other trucks out there. Solid handling
and overall feel. Lariat leather interior wears like iron. I drive about 2500+ miles per month and the ride is always
a pleasure.

Weakness:

Paint absolutely sucks--soft and not at all durable. Hood latch fails to lock with some degree of frequency, a fault common to every one of my last 3 Ford products. Power window
on passenger side began grinding to a halt at about 30,000 miles but works just fine in wet weather. Dealer couldn't find anything wrong. Hmmm...Lariat stereo package w/5CD changer sounds great but the changer location is assinine.
Developed engine knock at about 35,000 miles, remedied with
91 or higher octane fuel.

I think the sticker price for my fully loaded Lariat (only thing missing is moon roof) was about 32K(?) 1998 model year. I took a lease and built in many extra miles with nothing down and ended up with a monthly payment of just over $500/month, a bit high but worth every penny now that I am turning the truck back in within a few weeks with over 65,000 miles on it and with the few problems identified above as still active. If I had bought the truck I guess I
would be ticked off about the troubles noted above but since
I see leasing as a license to drive the hell out of a vehicle and give it back well on its way to being "used up," I won't complain. I'll be getting another F150, this time
an XLT that has all the same perks/options as the Lariat except for leather. I lowered the value rating to 3 stars on the basis of the problems listed above which I don't think should even appear on the event horizon until 50,000 miles or more; the overall rating is a higher 4 stars since I consider the truck a solid product with mine having perhaps a few more Monday morning assembly line hangover quirks than would otherwise be the case.

Very tight body and frame. Engine is good with respectable gas mileage.

Weakness:

Rear end extremely "squirrely" in rainy conditions. May be the Goodyear Wrangler AP Tires though.

I have owned my f-150 for about 3 years....It still looks good and is very tight (no rattles). This vehicle seems to be put together to last a long time. Vehicle seems put together better than similar Dodge models.

Model Reviewed: F150 4X4 XLT Reg cab Short bed.

Strength:

Ride. Rides like a Lincoln. Quiet, quiet, quiet. Takes railroad tracks very well. Hard to believe it's a truck untill a manuver. Looks aggressive. Sits high. Clock is well placed. Seats recline and lumbar is nice. I feel good in the seats. Like I could take a long trip. For a standard cab there is plenty of room behind the seats. I like the warning when I leave the lights on and exit the vehicle. I love the locking tailgate. I heard these tailgates can easily be stolen so I lock mine all the time.

Weakness:

Too early to tell but so far so good. I swore 15 years ago that I would never buy Ford, Mecury or domestic. I had a 1980 Zephyr that was a nightmare. Since then it's been nothing but Toyotas and Nissans to a fault. Well I just could not take it any more.

I bought this truck used. There is one thing that I noticed while looking at used F150s. All of them stink (smell bad) on the inside. Like the seat fabric or carpeting was made out of crap. I looked at many used ford and all of them stunk literaly. Because all of them smelled bad I bought one anyway. I used half a can of Lysol on my seats and now the cab doesn't stink any more. So I think it is the seats. It is too early to tell if the stentch is coming from the vents(engine compartment), the carpeting or the seats (as I suspect). So far I am pleased with the creature comforts.

Model Reviewed: F-150 Lariat Ex Cab 4x4 Off Road 5.4 liter V-8

Strength:

Just about everything. No use to list them individually (see below). I love the Deep Wedgewood Blue and Silver two tone color combo

Weakness:

None, really. I wish it got a little better gas miliage..but what can you expect, it's a truck. Maybe heat for the leather seats for those cold Wyoming days.

What can I say...there's a reason why the F-Series has been the best selling VEHICLE for the last 10 or 15 years.

For years, I've felt the F-150 was the best 1/2 ton pickup on the market, but always felt the folks at GM had one up on the Ford when it came to ride and handling. My, how things change. This truck is more comfortable than 80% of the cars I've ridden in. The interior space is huge, ergonomics are nearly perfect, and even at 75 mph it is extremely quiet inside. Minor bumps and uneven roads are soaked up by the suspension..even with the offroad package. Not until the truck encounters large bumps do you start realizing you are driving a truck.

The engine and tranny are world class. I have never liked automatic transmissions due to lack of responsiveness and sluggishness (what can I say, my other car is a Ford SVT Contour). This is only the second automatic I've owned. If all automatics were as smooth and responsive as the one in this truck, I'd never own another manual tranny. The engine torque (350 lb feet) peaks at 2500 rpm with 90% available from idle on up. This thing leaps off the line and pulls unrelenting to well above highway speeds. This is incredible for a big beast of a 4x4 truck and equal to or better than many so called "sports sedans". Handling is also amazing..I can easily carve a line into a turn at reasonable speeds. The power is where you need it in this truck.

The leather trimed interior is refined and useful. More so than any of the other trucks I tested. The GMC has just as much room in the back seat (maybe even a hair more), but overall the Ford is more open and spaciuos inside. The CD audio system is superb for any vehicle and there is power everything. It's nice to see Ford install the auto locking doors and auto-on headlamps on a truck like this. It even comes with a touch-pad keyless entry in addition to the remote.

Fit and finish is above par for a pickup and the body lines are superb and very aerodynamic..much more so than the other three.

Can you tell I love this truck. I never thought I could drive another truck after experiencing the sheer performance of my SVT Contour. I am proud to say that this truck has more than lived up to my expectations. I enjoy the truck as much as my car, and that says a lot.

Sticker price was $31,700. I got a fantastic deal on a lease that includes FREE routine maintanence that also extends the warranty to 45,000 miles.

Would I recommend this truck? Absolutely and without reservations!! It's an awesome machine. So nice in fact that as soon as I got mine, the in-laws had to get one (I feel I should mention they have never owed a Ford before, so this truck converted them from GM after 40 years!!). Their's is blue and tan. 10 stars easily, but only five allowed. Go drive one and be ready to sign the papers. They sell themselves.

Similar Products Used:

Drove the GMC Sierra, Toyota Tundra and Dodge 1500 Sport. Both nice trucks, but ultimately didn't equal the Ford in most categories. The Ford has far superior low-end torque and what seemed to be the biggest interior space. The Triton 5.4 liter V-8 of the F150 is without a doubt the smoothest V-8 out there for a truck (sorry Tundra owners). Ditto for the automatic tranny.
