Model Reviewed: Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4x4

Strength:

The Sport Trac is well built. The white-faced gauges are easy to read. The 4x4 handles well in the snow and on off-roading conditions. The 12-volt power outlet in the bed is a nice feature. The Sport Trac is well ventilated with the moon roof and the rear window. The Leather Seats are also comfy.

Weakness:

The engine is underpowered, and it is not reliable. The sound system is good, but I wouldn’t mind one with better base. Ford could install heated front row seats, and a power passenger seat.

I have had my Sport Trac for a little over a year now. I like it. I do feel that there are several things about it that I would change if I could. First of all, I would like to see Ford change the engine on it. I have had bad experience with Fords 4.0 liter SOHC V6. Not only is it underpowered, but it is not reliable. I have had a lot of trouble with this engine; everything from minor repairs to some major. I think that Ford should offer a V8 in the Sport Trac, or at least a 24 valve DOHC V6. With the exception of the engine, I love my Explorer Sport Trac, and I would not hesitate to get another one. I think that it is one of the most useful SUV’s I have ever used. And that is coming from a person who has to take a lot of people around, and needs room for his lawn and snow equipment. The Sport Trac has proven itself to be very useful, and it is also a lot of fun to drive. The 4x4 is reliable, the back window allows a nice breeze, the bed is unbreakable, the leather seats are comfy, and I love thee white-faced gauges. The bed has proven its usefulness and durability on multiple occasions, and the 12-volt power outlet also comes in handy. The Pioneer sound is also pretty good, but it is not as good as the MACH audio I have experienced in my past cars. I think that Ford should offer either MACH audio in the Sport Trac, or just a better system that you can get more base out of. Another thing that I love on the Trac is the six disk in dash CD player. This has been reliable, and the fact that it is in the dash leaves the storage console with more room. With the exception of the engine, my Ford Explorer Sport Trac is my type of Truck. It can hold five people, and still have room for the extra stuff. The truck is also well built, and (with the exception of the engine) it is reliable. I would get another one, but I am considering an F-150 Super Crew just because it offers a 5.4 Liter OHC V8.

Model Reviewed: Explorer Sport Trac

Strength:

Provides me with the accessibility of a truck, as well as very roomy for all 5 members of my house to go on trips. I have, however, had problems with it since I bought it: Paint started to crack on roof/front 2 fenders, engine overheated and the thermostat was replaced, tires recalled, hood latch replaced (recall), and it kept stalling (in the beginning) BUT I still love it.

Weakness:

Accessories cost too much. Service Department at Sanders Ford in Jacksonville, NC sucks. Quality of their assistance is rated at 0%.

Best vehicle ever made. I love it! It''s perfect for me.

Space Smoothness of ride Space Style

Weakness:

Air noise Gas mileage High priced extras

I was quite surprised by the space provided. Plenty of room for car-seats. The ride is marvelous compared to a true pick-up truck. The gas mileage is lower than expected, but I knew what I was getting in to. The dealership has been supportive and quick to answer any questions I may have. All in all, this vehicle has met my needs adn then some. The "minor" things are far overshadowed by the ride, the looks and the space. I can live with a little wind noise, especially in Texas where the wind is blowing ALL the damn time...LOL!

Strength:

Good engine, solid construction, lots of room inside and out, BABE EYE CATHCER

Weakness:

starting problem - has gone away on it''s own. Wish I had two of them.

Awesome SUV. I have had over 5 Ford Explorer Sports and recently traided in my Ford Fucos Lease a year early for this truck/SUV. The room inside is extremely accomodating. It''s very comfortable and lots of exras. Plenty of cup holders and a neat little note pad area in the center console. The grab and go bag is cool and roomy. I love the rear window feature. The rubber flooring is a major plus especially for outdoors people like me. I don''t have to worry about mud, dirt, sand or water after mountain biking, hiking, camping or beach. I recently got back from Georgia with two other people and we filled the bad with our luggage and groceries. We also tagged along two mountain bikes on the bumper. There was plenty of room inside for sleeping. The looks outside are awesome. I took it three days after leasing it. There was a problem with starting it at first. It usually took two tries to turn it over and crank, but that problem since then seems to have gone away. Maybe because it nedded some breaking in. Love the new Michelin tires and new suspension and handling. I''m looking forward to using the roof rack. I can''t say enough about this truck. I am so looking forward to sporting it out with grill guards, super fog lamps, window visors, etc... Also, the engine is very powerful, quiet, and not bad on gas for an SUV.

Weakness:

Seat covers not too stylish. Too high for grandma to get on. I will have running boards installed.

Not much miles but comfort it is. It has power, looks, room, and utility. Not for work haul. Good on home hauls. Great for show.

Strength:

Plenty of room in cab. 4x4 option works remarkably. Bed can carry almost anything. Rear air condition and sound controls are great for kids and passengers on long trips.

Weakness:

I have only had the truck for a year and I have had to bring it back to Ford around 20 times to have problems fixed. I have had paint chip off the step bars, gas gap leaked, clicking in engine, engine pulls forward when stopped, and also have had to have the toneau cover replaced for cracks, and lastly I''ve had the transmission reprogrammed because it was shifting early.

The sport trac was invented for the young outdoorsman. The truck handles great in all conditions that I have placed it in. In the city, the truck turns eveyones heads, and I am constantly stopped by individuals who want to look inside. However, the Sport Trac has many problems that have not yet been fixed.

Appartently Looks only!

Weakness:

None

I have always admired the body style of the Sport Trac and have stated since I the day I saw it that I would like to have one. I drive a tow truck on a part time basis and have now towed MANY of these vehicles listening to unhappy owners. BEWARE! Apparently there are some chronic problems with these that FORD even admits too. I have towed vehicles with under 20,000 miles on them being the fifth or sixth time they have been on a wrecker. I have quickly changed my mind on wanting to own one.

Room, power, stereo system, & good looks.

Weakness:

Gas mileage not all that great, but who cares.

The ST is great. Plenty of room, power, features, & stylish looks. Stereo system rocks, especially when cruising w/all 5 windows down & sunroof open. Handles very well for a SUV. Will by another in a few years.

Strength:

My father always said that he never wanted a 4 door vehicle because those were always seen as "family" cars and not very eye catching. In my opinion, the Sport Trac just crossed that barrier. This is one tough looking ride. I think any man (or woman) would be proud to be seen in this vehicle.
Another strength is the variety of options available (from Ford and aftermarket) to make the Sport Trac uniquely your own. Also available is the website, "mysporttrac.com". This outstanding site is a message board full of current (old and new) Sport Trac owners as well as potential buyers asking questions about the vehicle. This site offers unending suggestions, product updates, technical support, recall warning updates and accessorizing ideas 24 hours a day. The website is VERY user friendly and new members are welcomed to the site every day. This site is very well run and is even sponsored by several Ford dealerships who run special offers to site members and are available for questions.
With the change of Firestone tires and the little "quirks" fixed from review of the first production vehicles, the Sport Trac has proven to be a very reliable, very safe, very comfortable vehicle.

Weakness:

The gas mileage is my only complaint with this vehicle. However, mine is still new and not "broken" in yet. I am told the gas mileage will improve with time. However, should it not improve, this would not be cause enough for me to look for another vehicle. The Sport Trac offers far too many positives to let this one negative bring it down.

I wanted a vehicle that I could comfortably transport people in yet not lose the hauling capabilities of a truck. The Sport Trac fits my needs to a T. The interior is outstanding in it's comfort and ride. The full size rear seats allow for long trips without the rear passanger's knees being required to be tucked under their chin! The available options add a lot to the comfort and performance of the vehicle. However, even standard items, such as the back window that rolls down and the bed that comes ready to work, adds outstanding qualities that other vehicles fall very short of. I have yet to get in or even look at my Sport Trac without a smile emerging on my face.

Similar Products Used:

Before purchasing the Sport Trac, I looked at the Tundra, the Avalanche and many other vehicles. Most only offered the small rear seats and did not have the tough appearance of the Sport Trac. The Avalanche did have similar options, but it came with a heftier price tag, worse gas mileage and an outward appearance that I did not like as well as the Sport Trac
