Strength:

I do get good gas mileage--about 22 highway. Good acceleration.

Weakness:

audio system went crazy after 1 month, terrible wind noise, transmission has never shifted properly or smoothly (Chevy says it is working properly), brakes lock up constantly even though it has ABS (which has been replaced), gas pedal gets stuck--can't push down, cruise control gets stuck, terrible wind noise, steering column makes a clunking noise on & off, can't keep the front-end aligned, passenger seat doesn't recline, hood light doesn't work half the time, lights don't turn off, windows don't roll down easily, terrible traction in wet conditions.

At first I thought it was a great truck--good gas mileage, no wind noise, handled the dirt roads fine in 4x4--however, by 25000 miles (I now have 42000 miles) the problems began to appear. I've had several recalls, a new transfer case, new anti-locking braking system, factory tires were passenger, not all terrain on a 4x4 (I lived 8 miles out a rough dirt road), and a new catayletic (not sure of spelling) converter.
I would not buy another Chevy product, nor would I recommend the Silverado. For the amount of money paid, it has not proven to be a reliable vechile. The dealership purchased from has not been helpful, and has tried to charge for service that the warranty covered. We also purchased a 2000 Chevy Blazer and it has been in the shop nearly every week since driving it home.

Strength:

The Allison 5 speed auto transmission. The whine you get used to, the easy shifting and the braking going down steep hills loaded is fantastic.
The engine is a strong engine, but it should come from the factory with zero back pressure dual mufflers. It has the capability of being a very strong engine if GM would only do so.

Weakness:

The two piece drive line that should not have been used from the beginning. The roof marker lights, which are standard on the 3500, leaked in the rain. Water would literally run out of the top center console during a rainstorm. Had the light removed and sealed, now it doesn't leak.
Constantly changing pinon seal and bearing caused from the vibrating drive line is ludicrous. Too many of GM dealers are band-aid specialists. They don't or won't take the time to repair an item properly. The Firestone tires were rotated at 10,000 miles, they were worn almost halfway. They will not make 20,000 miles when pulling a heavy trailer that is under the rated capacity for the truck.

I pull a 12,000 pound 5th wheel. At 1,000 miles the draive train began to vibrate. The carrier bearing on the two piece driveshaft was not strong senough to stand up to the torque of the 8.1/Allison 5 speed. Weatherford, Texas it was checked out,no driveshaft available. 7,000 miles later it was replaced at Rexberg. Now have consistent oil leaking from pinon bearing and seal. They are changed every 2,000 miles.
Fuel mileage pulling trlr was 6.5 in the wind to 9.4 on level ground at 2100 rpm. Unloaded it was 15.4 at 68mph, 11 at freeway speed. Installed dual exhausts, mileage went from 11 at 75 to 14 at 75. Pulling the trailer mileage went from 6.5 in the mountains to 9.0, this is from Cody, Wyoming thru Yellowstone Park to Livingston, Mt. with grades of 7% for 12 miles to 17 miles at a time. Not level ground. Lower speeds of 35 - 50 miles an hour I can experience the greatest improvement. I am happy with this vehicle. It is an extended cab w/long box, the doors do not rattle provided they are shut tight. I would not recommend anyone to buy this if they were gong to use it for every day travel. But for pulling a heavy trailer it does great, it has 4.10 gears and is a 4X4.

I had a 1991 Dodge with a Cummins engine, 5 speed trans.and 3.55 gears. It pulled the trailer at 9 mpg. Would like to try the Duramax diesel if it ever gets dependable and available.

Strength:

Lot's of power, very comfortable interior, very well thought out features inside and out.Interior very ergonomic.

Weakness:

Would like to have a manually shifting transfer case even with LS or LT models for those of us that don't like electronic actuators doing everything for us.

At this point in time, very satisfied. Got my truck 200 under invoice because it was a demo, a great deal, very happy with truck. Love the four door extended cab. whoever complains about the back doors being too hard to shut is a pussy. This is a truck, not a minivan!

Strength:

Excellent power with the 5.3. Ride quality is wonderful compared to other full size trucks. 40/20/40 seating arrangement is very functional. Great looks with aggressive stance. Interior seems to be a little more refined than other full size trucks. Awesome air conditioning! No real problems after 34,000 miles.

Weakness:

Center console has storage for tapes but truck comes standard with a CD player. Automatic headlights are great but there is no way to turn them off at night. This doesn’t seem like a big problem but is comes up more than I thought. Transmission seems to stumble into gear from time to time. Antilock brakes trigger prematurely on rough pavement. I am going to have to take it to the dealer to have a few odds and ins checked out before my warrantee expires. Gass pettal is starting to stick a little in the up possition. Slight clunk in rear end, I am told by other owners that this is a common problem and easy to fix.

All in all I am very pleased with the Silverado. I have had none of the “dash rattle” noise that others have reported. The whole truck seems to be very solid. I am so impressed with the power. I know for a fact that it will make short work of any standard full size Ford or Dodge. I also love the Autotrack four wheel drive option. When Autotrack is engaged the front drive line is also engaged but not locked in at the hubs. When the computer senses slippage in the rear wheels it automatically locks the hubs. This way you can have the advantage of four wheel drive in patchy ice conditions and not have to worry about hurting your four wheel drive system. The system also comes with standard high and low range four wheel drive for off road conditions. I would strongly recommend driving a Silverado before deciding on another truck.

Before I purchased my Chevy, I drove the F-150, Dodge Ram, and the Toyota Tundra. In my opinion there was no comparison. The Chevy had better ride quality and power than both the Dodge and the Ford and better looks, interior and options than the Toyota.

Strength:

I hate this Truck.

Weakness:

IT's a 2000 and it can't pull my 18 ft fiberglass boat. Gas is a problem and also, torque. Especially going up hill, the 5.3 liter engine roars and grinds those gears, the rpm goes to like 4500 to have it's exact speed in place. A lot of turning noise and a lot of shock noise. i don't know what is wrong with this american piece of junk s### machine.

I paid an extra 3 grand to get me the Tundra. Now I Love the Tundra. This is what i call a Truck. Torque and Power and Towing is not even a problem i had like on the chevy. I rate my Tundra the top of all the american trucks.

rattles rattles and more rattles

I have always been a devoted chevy man but that may change soon. I bought the Silverado after my son was born(s10 too small for family) and after about 5000 miles the rattles started. The first rattle started coming from the back doors on the xcab my dealer tells me this is a known problem and have ordered parts to fix it(2 weeks ago). the next rattle was a clunk in the driveline, my dealer told me this was a known problem too and changed the grease in a driveline component not sure were, after I picked up my truck for this I began to notice that over small bumps or during braking that the truck creaks like a 1900 model instead of a 2000 going back monday to have this checked. I love chevys but I hate this truck!

Lots of power, Takes any abuse we dishout to it. Has been in some crazy terrain and not gotten stuck. It looks so good!

Weakness:

Well one is that it didnt hold up very good to a nissan (going 35) slaming into the driver door. But it looks great after some auto body work. The only bad part is they put 4x6 speakers in the truck.( 6x9s would sound better.) everything else is great.

Its a great truck. The BEST part is that its NOT A FORD or DODGE!!!!! It has great power and can beat any ford or dodge. FORDS SUCK!!!!
This truck has been through a serious beating and came back again a couple of times.

Model Reviewed: Chevy 2500 HD 8100 Vortec/Allison

Strength:

1. Engine-This is a monster motor, and while not as impressive as the 6600 duramax deisel, this thing will fly in stock trim almost as well. I bought this truck as a toy, and it will be shipped to Lingenfelter as soon as I have owned it for 6 months, to avoid the tax. With 496 cubes on tap, this bad boy big block is just waiting to be untapped. After I am done stroking and boring the beast out to around 540-550 CI, I should be looking at an easy 600 hp and around 650 lb. ft. of torque. Even with the auto tranny, which will gobble up the extra power with no problem after a few modifications, and the 5200+ lbs. this truck weighs, I figure I will be looking at around the high 12's in the quarter mile. If you own this truck give Lingenfelter a call.
2. Transmission-easily the strongest automatic tranny GM has ever offered. With 5 gears on tap, even the immense power of the two new big blocks are keep in the beef of their power ranges. It does shift a little harsh, but this is an industrial strenght tranny, so don't expect it to be nice and smooth like your mom's toyota camry.
3. Interior-high grade leather, high grade plastics (for GM), excellent layout, plenty of room in extended cab form. Even more in crew cab.

Weakness:

1. Stereo-then again, any stock system can be improved.
2. Gas Mileage-even in stock trim my truck only gets about 8 or 9 miles a gallon, maybe 12-13 on the highway. If you want the power, expect to pay for it. I can only guess how bad I'll be paying for it at the pump when my truck gets back from Lingenfelter.
3.GM reputation-admittedly, chevy has a better reputation building trucks than they do cars, which they build and warrant horribly. Still, you have to wonder when the squeaks and rattles, and other little annoyances, start acting up.

Great truck, great platform, great drivetrain...but...you have to be careful when buying one of these brutes. These a serious work trucks, not commuter cars, and they have such sopisticated equipment, something is bound to break or go wrong during ownership. If you can afford it, go with the 6600 duramax deisel and the allison 5-speed auto. These are both tough, battle tested pieces of hardware, having been tried and true in service with Isuzu and Allison for years. If you are intent on building up your truck, like me, the 8100 vortec is the way to go. Upgrading the duramax would obviously be the better alternative, but good luck find someone to do it.

I love this truck, I also own a 1997 Tahoe that is also sweet! I couldn't imagine owning anything but a Chevy, I looked at Forerunners before I bought my Tahoe...no comparrison when it comes to power and room, then while shopping for my Z71 I looked at Toyota Tacomas and Tundras....again there was little that could be compared between the Toyotas and the Chevrolet. If you want a MANS truck buy the Chevy, if you want a kids truck with kid size power go see your local Toyota dealer!

Weakness:

That it came with Firestone tires, and I wish it came stock with a little more ground clearence.

Chevy has always built good trucks, as long as I can remember I have been riding in Chevy trucks, no matter if it was my grandpas 49' ranch truck or my uncles 72' irrigation truck they have all been tough dependable trucks!
Like these my Chevy's are great vehicles and I will continue to drive them.
