2500 LS ExCab Shortbed 4x4
Strength:
Lots of power. Not as bone-rattling as some 3/4 tons. Roomy interior with good accessibility to controls. Rear seating good sized. Comfortable to drive/secure feel. Front seat restraints integrated into seatback, making back seat easily accessible. Dealership excellent, so far. Damn good lookin' unit.
Weakness:
Gas mileage is poor, 14-15 on a good week. But that was expected so no points against. Disturbing vibration in pedal during hard braking. Haven't had it looked at yet, though. I thought I had done my homework by going out and checking out the competitors to the Silverado. I had no idea of the problems of the '99 model line until I found this web-site. I have to admit to being a bit horrified. So far my truck has been suberb and I hope it stays that way. I did not consider the Toyota Tundra simply because the towing capacity was too low. I pull a travel trailer and, although not very big, I intend to upgrade in a year or 2 and don't want to have to buy another truck to pull it. So, obviously, I bought the Silverado for a long term vehicle. The gas mileage is poor, but that is expected being a big truck and unfortunately I have to use it for commuting a lot. Not a commuter as others have said. I also have hauled some stuff and the truck doesn't flinch. I've noticed when braking hard, and hitting a bump at the same time, the brake pedal seems to "stiffen" and a vibration is felt through my foot. So far no catastrophes, and it only happened a few times, but I will have it looked at. I'm afraid it is one of those things that will never happen at the dealer. Very infrequent. Since finding this web-site I am much more in tune to the little things than I was before. Like I said, so far so good after 8,000 miles. If things go south from here, I will update this review. Best of luck to those of you who have evidently been stuck with a lemon and I hope your luck turns for the better. There are a lot of Chevy pickups on the road. Most must be ok. Based on my own experiences, I would recommend the truck,if you can live with lousy gas mileage (I can), a firm ride and a few squeaks and rattles. It is a 3/4 ton pickup after all, not a Lexus. It has been everything I expected and I love it. Note to all you diehard Dodge/Ford/Chevy guys: The Tundra is built in Indiana, by Americans and it is here to stay. Having it on board in the big truck market will only improve the product coming out of Detroit. Similar Products Used: I've had 3 Toyotas, 1980 4x4, '88 4x4, and '98 T-100, all excellent for what they were. They can't really be compared to the Silverado, though. Drove the F-250- not enough room in the x-tra cab and just too much of a work truck feel for my needs; Dodge Ram- nice but doesn't grade too well and never much of a Chrysler man; GMC Sierra- couldn't find one with the options I needed and dealer jerking me around cash-wise. |

Strength:
Everything, power, speed, looks, room, dependability, leather, and a 5-speed.
Weakness:
The only thing I don't like about it is the gas mileage and the urge to smoke the tires. This truck is everything you would ever want. It is awesome, it has tons of power with the 5.7L 350, and added with the 5-speed, there is no match for this truck. It rides like a car and tows with the power of a tractor especially with a snowmobile in the bed and two on the trailer. I can't say enough about this truck except for the fact that they don't make them like this anymore. Similar Products Used: GMC s-15, I shouldn't really compare an s-15 to a silverado because it isn't even close. |

WHEN YOU'RE TURNING TO YOUR RIGHT AND IN REVERSE YOU HEAR A CLICKING NOISE. ALSO THE BREAKS STICK.THE WINDOWS GO UP VERY SLOWLY.AND IT DRINKS LOT'S OF GAS. I TOOK THIS VECHILE BACK TO THE DEALER,AND THEY DIDN'T HEAR THE NOISE. SO THEN I TOLD THEM THATI WOULD DRIVE IT FOR THEM SO THST THEY COULD HEAR IT FOR THEMSELVES AND THEY DID. BUT THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS IS COMMEN FOR THIS TRUCK. YA, RIGHT. TO THIS DAY THEY HAVE NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE FIXD THE BREAKS. BUT THE NOISE IS STILL THERE. THE MACHANICS SUCK. Similar Products Used: I HAD A 1999 DODGE RAM, AND TRADED I IT IN FOR THIS HUNK OF JUNK.I WILL BE TRADING THIS IN. |

1500 Silverado V8 Ext Cab
Strength:
Rides like a luxury car, very smooth. Gets up and goes.
Weakness:
Some of the interior plastics broke easily. The vents on the passenger side do not completely close off. Air escapes around the sides. If you are the passenger and the air conditioner is on you freeze. We bought this truck brand new and absolutly love it. We have 164,000 miles on it and have only replaced the battery and the throllbearing.( i don't know if I spelled that right.) This truck rides great, corners like a sportscar and gets decent gas mileage. Similar Products Used: Ford Ranger, Ford Bronco II. Can only compare inside workmanship. Even though a Few things broke on the Chevy, the interior is superior to ford workmanship. |

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Extended Cab 4x4
Strength:
Handling, ruggedness, comfort, myriad of standard features, andappearance. I had a Lumina APV previously and went to crap shortly after the warranty period ran out and the dealership was a lot less than helpful (I've since changed dealerships and have been pleased, so far).
Weakness:
Too early to tell but, I'm delighted with it so far. About $30,000.00 and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a comfortable good-looking truck and buying one from Smith Chevrolet on IH-10 West if you're ever in San Antonio (Ms. Betty Rowan was outstanding). Silverado Z71
Strength:
5.3L has more power than 5.7L. Comfortable seats, roomy interior, good handling, great brakes
Weakness:
Auto headlights, terrible shocks, speed limiter, wind noise, no tailgate lock We've had this truck for a little over a year now and have had no real major problems with it. It is a 99 Silverado extended cab Z71 which replaced a 93 K1500 extended cab Z71. Cost was about 30,000 which was a bit hard to swallow. Just took it in to have warranty work performed (200mi left)and only thing that I could really come up with was the seal on the front differential was leaking. Dealer replaced the seal and haven't seen any signs of leaks yet. We took this truck on a cross the USA trip and were quite comfortable, but wind noise can get to be a bit much. Handling of the truck is very good but the stock Tenneco shocks on the Z71 are absolutely terrible. Replaced them with Rancho RSX and ride is MUCH better. Truck does quite well in mud and snow. It just needs to have a bit more clearance. I had to adjust the parking brake soon after we bought the truck because of rear brakes dragging. The tow/haul switch comes in handy when driving in the mountains because it will pretty much solve the shift hunting that some folks have problems with by increasing the shift points by about 2-300 rpm. Silverado 2 wheel drive
Strength:
It maintains speed in the mountains, good looking truck, driver seat comfortable and controls within reach.
Weakness:
Already put new shocks in it, the windsheild was not glued in, the rear side windows (3 Door model) leaked and would not lock, both front doors have had to have new panels installed and even these are loose and rattle, the back seat squeaks and rattles with any weight whatso ever, the passenger seat squeaks and rattles with no weight on it. The box is weaker than an aluminum can. When I haul anything it leaves marks or dents in the box. The ride on my 90 chevy was better. It leaves alot to be desired on snow and ice. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH CHEVY ON THE NEW SILVERADO!!! I recommend that Chevy rethink this line of trucks, my faith in Chevrolet is failing fast. I am currently looking for a new vehicle and for the 1st time in 16 years I am looking strongly at other brands. The only car I ever owned that was not a GM product was a 1979 Dodge Omni with about 200,000 miles on it when I sold it. My 1990 Chevy pickup was a dream truck, seldom in the shop, but I wanted the back seat and the 3rd door, what a mistake. I currently would not recommend that anyone buy a Silverado, until Chevy increases their workmanship in the pickup. Similar Products Used: 1990 Chevy 1/2 ton (comparable pickups) the 1999 STINKS, 1993 Chevy Blazer, 1989 GMC pickup, 1987 Blazer, Buick LaSabre's this pickup is the worst for being in the shop and needing repairs. |
