Strength:

Gas mileage, looks, comfort (6 way heated seats, WOW!!), durability.

Weakness:

Handling, turning radius

This is the second Chevrolet I''ve owned and I''m still a die hard fan. I haven''t noticed anything wrong with this truck yet and it had 70K miles on it when I bought it. The ride is exceptional, the comfort is unmatched, the engine power (5.3L) is outstanding. The handling is not as good as could be and the steering radius kinda sucks, but thats to be expected with a extended cab. I love this truck. I also hunt in this truck and haven''t had any trouble off road, although I don''t really beat it up anyway.

Model Reviewed: Silverado 2500HD 6.0L

Strength:

Nice styling

Weakness:

6.0L cold engine knock a major issue. Engine sounds like either main bearings are loose or (according to dealer) piston slap. GM states this is normal and won''t affect life of engine yet made improvements in bearing clearances late 2001 to help eliminate the knock.

6.0L engine knock started right after I took delivery. Dealer stated "they all do that" and gave me GM 800 number to pursue - pretty much washed their hands of any responsibility. GM customer assistance isn''t offering much hope of a satisfactory resolution either.

Transmission, Transmission, Transmission

Love the truck and Cheverlot products. My only problem is with the transmission. Purchased truck in June 97, May 2000, 46000 miles later, transmission had to be rebuilt. Today, October 2001, 25000 miles later, another rebuilt transmission has to be put in. Dealership not willing to stand behind there product. This is a pleasure vehicle for me, do not have a trailer hitch on back........Can anyone explain this?

Strength:

Great looks, best handling, spacious front and EXT cab, and very comfortable seats for all passengers. More standard features in lower models than Ram or F-150.

Weakness:

Shocks need improvment.

This truck will certainly grab you with it''s looks very quickly. It''s very well styled If Nothing else. Infact, my only complain in that area is a large rise between the front grill and the hood. The Serria, doesn''t have that problem. The truck has fairly good shocks, as far as such trucks go. It certainly beats any truck Crysler has on the market. The standard engine power on the base 1500 versions is the lowest in that class - which is quite displeasing. Ford offers 215, Dodge 235, Silverado and Serria only 200. The extended cab is the largest of any of the trucks, and by far the most comfortable - they know how to do it right. The front seats are spacious, not cramped against those of us who need the room. The AC on the newer models has much improved, as well as the sound system which has been knocked up a fair bit. I love driving this truck on the highway, more than enough power to do the job. Great job Chevy/GMC - great trucks, I''ll buy them again.

Strength:

The extend cab offer more room and more comfortable rear bench seat then Ford F250 SD. Well, we are not comparing with crew cabs because crew cabs with long box are simply toooo long for everyone. I will buy it again years later if Ford and Dodge never want to make the rear seat in their EXT cabs more comfortable .

Weakness:

The windshield fluid bottle was leaking a few days after I got the truck. It was replaced with 2 new bottles but still leaking. Finally GM technician realized that the pump was leaking too. I have got 2 bottles and 1 pump for past 4 months and will be watching if it''s still leaking...

It''s a Silverado 2001 HD Ext Cab, LS, 4x2, long box. I use it to carry my sliding-in camper when I travel with my families (6 people). It just does the job we want it do! 6.0L with 300 horsepower engine plus heavy duty suspension, it is easy handling, good acceleration. We travel on paved road, provincial parks and national parks campgrounds, and never have a problem with its 2 wheel drive.

Model Reviewed: crewcab Duramax short bed

Strength:

"F--- you" power, terrific seats, great brakes and decent fuel economy which seems to be improving (only 1600 miles so far). Like being in a "rubber rocket". I liked my 97 Silverado but this is way better in every way(except for the sun visors which are junk.) ?

Weakness:

1.) Fuel filler door has no lock and locking caps are unavailable. 2.) Windshield is too thin and will break if hit by a June bug at speed. 3.) Sun visors in 200l only are inadequate and need to be replaced by the 2001 model which is only difference in 2002. 4.) I would be concerned about ground clearance if I had to negotiate many rocks.

Almost too good to be true. Comfort, luxury (LT model), noise and vibration free and I find myself picking it over my Audi Quattro for the longer trips. The extra cost of the Duramax is well worth it-you will get it back when you sell--if you ever do.

Model Reviewed: 1500HD

Strength:

brakes, interior noise, cornering and handling, passing power.

Weakness:

interior plastic build quality could be better and the cup holder with the bench seat option is in a terrible location. I have bumped the truck into neutral a couple times with my hand while messing with the radio or climate control. The gear shift lever is not ergonomically in the best designed.

I bought a 1500 HD crewcab 4x4 with a 6.0L engine. Decent truck, plenty of room. Brakes are outstanding. Power is comparable to my 96 Silverado with a 5.7L. I was a little disappointed in the lack of low end torque with this 6.0L but it has good mid to upper range power. Great for passing at highway speeds. GM has mated the transmission gear ratio to engine power better than on my old truck. The 96 when floorboarded would often shift down to too low a gear and really impeded its passing ability, this truck seems to shift down in the right gear and pass pretty quickly. If you tow a lot opt for the 8.1 or the duramax. I had test drove the 2500HD in several versions and found this 1500 HD rides a little better. The suspension has the usual GM lack of compression damping which beats you to death on rough roads or on sharp bumps. Rebound and spring rates are stiff enough to make it corner very flat. Gas mileage so far has been 13-14 mpg, that''s at highway speeds of 70-75 mph. That is also on mineral based oil. To tweak the power up I installed the power tune program with a Hypertech Programmer which I had very good luck on my 96. It adds about 20 hp through the midrange and increases torque about the same. I also installed a K&N air filter to allow it to breathe easier. It makes quite a bit of difference but is not cheap (Around $350.00 for the programmer) Only problem encountered is I noticed the truck did not sit level. This was easily adjusted by the dealer. I also noticed that most of the new 4x4 trucks sitting on the lot had the same problem. So look out for this. So far the truck has met my expectations but I do not do a lot of towing or use this as a work truck. The auto 4wd works great in poor traction conditions. No squeaks or rattles so far. At highway speeds it is extremely quiet for interior noise and the seats are comfortable. I have the power bench seat (cloth). For recreational use and light towing I would recommend this truck. As a work truck the bigger engine packages would probably be a better choice

Strength:

Decent fuel economy, 4 doors are handy, back seats much better than 199x models.

Weakness:

Seats are like a park bench and are much lower than 199x models I think this is to give you the impression there''s more headroom. A generally "weak" quality that''s tough to put into words but if you went from an old body style Chevy to anything newer than 2000, I think you''d understand; it just feels soft. Clunks, moans & groans going over speed bumps -- haven''t even bothered going off-road with it. They increased the horsepower, but lost torque, so it only feels powerful at 3/4 throttle and above.

The worst truck I''ve owned yet (this is my 3rd). Nice looking body styling, I really wanted the 4-doors, so I gave up my ''98 Z71... Dumbest thing I ever did.

Weakness:

Reliability, Transmission, Wipers,Brakes, Handling, warrenty, dealer, Chevrolet, GM

My extended cab LS had almost every available extra except leather. The ride was great but the handeling was ponderous. I had to really remind myself to slow down when switching from the car. The 5.3 engine is great! Good Milage, Power and reliability. The 4/4 controls are wonderfull. But not the transmission. It and the truck went at 50K Brakes OK when they stay togther but twice the roters began flaking apart. Once on warrenty, once not. The ABS sensors went at 45K and required replacing the front hubs ($$) to fix. The windshield wipers broke soon after delivery and regularly there after. It must be said that this truck was used as a car mostly with only occasional trailer pulling and only household garbage chores. This truck was dealer maintained and babied. After all the other headaches, the automatic transmission was the last straw. I visited my local Toyota Dealer and bought a Tacoma. I hope I do better!
