good styling. I should have saved my money and bought the 8.1 gas with the 3.73 rearend.
Weakness:
waited for the 2002 model or bought a ford truck. At first 50 miles noticed a fluid leak. turned out to be a faulty power steering hose. AT 900 miles driveline clunk, due to lack of any grease in output spline from transmisson. Now have had constant low economy 13.7 mpg in town. loud noises from fuel injection pump. vibration in the steering wheel. dealer say''s vibration is normal and will not attemped to fix because they all vibrate. one dealer replaced four injectors. they said that these engine have tendencies to have bad injectors. clunk is pack in drive line. Strength:
1. Automatic headlight control. Headlights that come on at the right intesity (daytime or low beam, high beam must be selected manually) as soon as the E-Brakes are released and shut of when the ignition is shut off. It also has a manual overide, in case you are driving while it''s snowing during the day. 2. Battery run down protection. I think that explains itself. 3. 4 doors for exteded cab models instead of two. 4. rear folding seat 5. EFI, no carberetor adjustments, reduced emissions, easy to start in cold weather if the block heater is used. 6. Awesome fuel economy. Almost 30 MPG. Why can''t the new Suburbans get that. 7. Smooth shifting on manual transmissions. It has a hydraulic clutch too. 8. Dome light override.
Weakness:
The vehicle is not basic enough. 1. The seats are too comfortable. An even bench seat like the ones used in the 1940''s-1980''s should be optional on at least the base models. 2. Power assist steering, and brakes should be optional. 3. You don''t need air bags if you are wearing a seat belt. 4. The seat belt buzzer should be optional. It is very annoying when you''re just backing out of a garage. 5. Key-off loads. Things like driver habbit recognition and other ECM functions should be saved somewhere like the odometre reading is. 6. Can''t Pull a lot of weight Type: Extended Cab Fleetside Short Box 5x2 This is very good vehicle. It''s fuel efficient and very roomy. 5 people can comfortably sit in it. It just needs a 2-speed axle shift to increase it''s towing capicity. Similar Products Used: Nothing I''ve ever driven, but I''m sure that there are vehicles out there. |

Dependable, strong motor, looks good, best mileage in its class.
Weakness:
Bad a/c design on this model. Rearend fluid must be changed in rearend after purchase to insure there are no machine grindings in the gear case. This truck gave me some problems at 55,000 with the a/c and I had the compressor replaced. The bearings had to be replaced in the rear end at 75,000. Other than that this truck has been an extremely good performer and very dependable. Still running strong at 130,000. Word to the wise. If you have one of these models put some michelins on it and keep them rotated. You won''t regret the extra cost. I''m at 80,000 on this set. Similar Products Used: Ford |

Nice looking
Weakness:
Transmission, 4X4 system I never owned a Chevy pickup, nor am I a Chevy or Ford guy, but I have seen a lot of people (6) with major problems with this vechile. 3 guys at work owned this vechile and had to replace the transmission around 40K miles. I know 3 other people outside of work that had the same problem with newer ones. Why anyone would buy this vechile is beyond me. Most Chevy dealers are very difficult to work with on warranty items (I am told) Similar Products Used: Most of these guys have owned older Chevy and Ford pickups without problems. The newer ones 96 and up are "junk" |

Engine! Has huge nuts! Transmission is great. The rpm''''''''s stay in one spot when shifting. You never know it is shifting.
Weakness:
Nothing so far, wish they would have put goodyear tires on instead of Firestone''''''''s. We totally love this truck. We so far have not had one bit of trouble with it. The truck has nuts like you would not believe. Also, we love having the posi-traction. Who wouldn''''''''t pay the extra little bit and get it. We also love having 4-wheel drive. Engine has lots of power, good mileage for a v8 truck, quiet and comfortable, brakes are strong.
Weakness:
cheap plastic interior, sheetmetal WAY too thin, crappy option packages, transmission programming. I got this truck after someone wrecked my s10. This truck has been a mixed bag of pleasures and dissapointments. First off, the engine is fairly powerful. Much more powerful than the 4.3L in my s10, but not quite on the same level as the old 5.7L. One advantage it has is that it has a wide power band so i can use low gears on steep hills longer. However, it gets terrific mileage. Silverado is currently getting 18mpg mixed driving. Beats the 12mpg for the 5.7L and is only 1 or 2 mpg less than the s10''s v6. Chevy finally put some real brakes on their trucks. This truck stops as good as most passenger cars. It''s also the quietest truck I''ve ever driven. The truck has been reliable in the short time I''ve owned it. Now the bad. The transmission programming completely stinks. Shifing is so mushy that it can hold a constant engine rpm while accelerating in one gear. It also shifts too early, and takes too much gas (almost floored) to kick out of OD into third. The interior plastic is cheap for any car, but with fair ergonomics. The left mirror can''t turn left far enough to see in the blind spot. Sheet metal is thin. I''d like them to go back to the metal thickness in ''80s trucks. The plastic bumper is held on by paperclips. I hate option packages - if the non-LS truck came with power windows, I would have got that and saved $3k. I chose this truck over : Dodge because of the Dodge''s abysmal fuel economy, Ford because of all the hoopla over Firestone tires and crashworthiness, Toyota because it costs more money than i wanted to spend. Weakness:
Engine rattles like its going to come apart during cold starts. Dealer and service department haven''t helped at all. Fan motor sqeaks. Too many recalls. Being stuck with a $30,000 dollar truck that isn''t worth the money it takes to tag it. This truck is the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. It is in the shop almost as much as it is driven. Problems have been non-stop. The engine started rattling during cold starts with under 15,000 miles on it. Dealer said that was normal at first, but after the third return to the service department I was told that the pistons are slapping the top of the cylinder heads on alot of these 5.3 engines (especially once carbon builds up on them). Supposedly new pistons are being designed for release in 2002, but according to dealer still aren''t available. Service department says that this isn''t anything to worry about, but we should all know better. Metal to metal can''t be good. Truck has been recalled twice for brake and brake line issues. Master brake pump booster when kaputs at 1,000 miles. Heater blower began squelling @ 44,000 miles and dealer wants $225 to replace. I found an aftermarket one at O''Reilly for $64.00. Do yourself a favor, spend the $30,000 on a different brand. Similar Products Used: Ford F150 Dodge 1500 Ford Bronco (full size) |

8.1 motor has power to pull. Better than anything else I used that was gas.
Weakness:
Burns roughly two qts oil every 1500 miles without towing anything. has worse gas milage than my old 1980 big block truck I am a huge Chevy fan. This truck Might of changed my mind. The dealler sucks(can''t get any answers). Burns more oil than my 1980 c30 454 crew cab did. Makes all kinds of noises in rear end, trans, rear suspension, and the plastic dash won''t stop squeaking. Should of never got rid of the 1980 truck drove just as good better gas milage and was paid for. I do have a nicer radio in the 2001 Similar Products Used: 1980 c30 crew cab 454, 2001 f350 V10 (little too weak for what it is) |
