Strength:
Inexpensive; get's the job done; looks great with the chrome package; much more comfortable ride vs. compact truck; good 18mpg, but not as good as 4cyl Tacoma @ 27mpg
Weakness:
Accelleration not the same as V8. Most of my driving is 60mph on highway cruising, so I don't really need it Silverado 1500 w/auto, air, chrome package, 4.3 V6. I've been extrememly pleased. 4.3 goes as fast as I care to go, pulls my 3,000# boat great, gets 18 mpg Similar Products Used: Had '80 Dodge Ram w/Slant 6; '85 Dodge Ram w/318; '99 Tacoma w/4 cyl |

No standard Tailgate lock! People that drive Tundras think they have a truck almost equal to you. I used to drive Fords my last being a 97 reg cab with a 4.2L Auto. It barely got 16mpg on the highway. Since then I have driven Chevys. Since 99 I had a Ext Cab with a V-6 then in '01 I got an LS with a 5.3. Now in '03 I have a LS ext cab with a 4.8. This one had just been unloaded off a transport and had 3 miles on the odometer. It was optioned just as I wanted but it had a 4.8 engine. So I thought since it only has 15 horsepower less than a 5.3 there should not be mush difference. I made a great choice. This 4.8 runs great. I doubt there is a fender difference. The torgue difference may be noticeable with extreme towing but for light and medium I doubt one could tell the difference unless they looked under the hood. The 4.8 is about 800 bucks cheaper as well! I get about 16-17 around town and as much as 22+ on the highway! I have 4500 miles as this is wriiten. The truck is smooth and comfortable. I am still getting used to the new front end on the Chevy. The only prblem I have had with this truck is my wheels were out of balance when new. My dealer balanced them and now it runs smooth. People a great dealer can make a car. I have friends who own Honda's with dealers that make excuses rather than repairs. Our local dealer is great. They practice excellent customer service. The only thing I question about this truck is standard rear window defroster. This is an option I have question whether I will ever use in Texas. Chevy, Ford , Dodge makes real Trucks. Toyota makes wanta-bees. I am pleased so far with this Silverado! Similar Products Used: 87 F-150, 88 F-150, 93 F150, 95 F-150, 96 F150, 97 F-150. 99 Ext Cab Siverado, 01 Silverado |

Engine knocking after only 10000 miles I've had a problem with the front differential leaking in the shop 3 times before it was fixed now the engine sounds like it's comming apart when cold I'm really not happy with it I thought I'd buy a heavy duty truck to last me a long time now I'm looking to get rid of it after 20000 miles before I really lose alot of money I hope GM will replace these knocking motors if not I'll never waste my hard earned money on their cars and trucks |

I have NEVER been stuck with this truck. The torsionbar suspension gives a good ride over rough roads.VERY dependable, fires up on first crank, takes only a few at -40F,while NOT plugged in.I go prospecting in the mountains with this truck, and it never lets me down, ever!
Weakness:
Hmmm...auto hubs for 4x4, you need to shift into 4x4 BEFORE you need it,not during! The frame drops down under the cab to accomodate the torsion-bar suspension, losing several inches in frame clearance. A very good truck, can't ask for better! When I purchased it, the 350 had been replaced with a SB400,JBA headers,blue-printed/balanced,edelbrock hi-riser w/ 454 2bbl TBI. I have since added Bosch platinum 4 plugs, and a K&N filtercharger air filter. While I don't get racecar performance from the 2bbl TBI, I do have all the power I need, and then some! This truck weighs in at 2200 kg (4,840 lbs.) and gets 23MPG highway if I use overdrive. I have only done regular maintenance, and am now at the point of overhauling the front differential/drive axles. Front diff has "torington" bearings, and seepage is apparently normal.Repairs to date: replaced rear axle seals, replaced u-joints both driveshafts. I think this series (up to '95 or so) are the best ones for chev trucks. Similar Products Used: ford F-150 |

All of the same complants everyone else said but so what. Turn up the radio a little and drive it!! in a couple of years you will buy something else. Everthing that everyone said that was good or great is true. I've had my rig for about 8 months now and it gets great gas milage. And recently for christmas I installed a pair of "APC" clear corners and a set of 03'g3 taillights which add a nice touch to the rig. It makes a few sweeks but every rig does. So it does'nt matter what kind of truck you end up buying its still a machine. Similar Products Used: 89'ford pickup, 94' chev pickup, 99' toyota tocoma. |

Weakness:
At 500 miles the power steering was replaced for leaking. Today, at 35,972 miles a steering column bearing was replaced (steering was difficult and noisy). I also had a hesitation on the highway in top gears under light acceleration, felt like I had pushed the clutch pedal in and then dropped it, forcing me back into my seat. I was told this was caused by a misfire due to corroded distributor and rotor, possibly from powerwashing the engine. Other maintence includes refilling window washer fluid, regular oil changes and tire rotations. Gas Milage: about 17 mpg I have driven my Silverado for year and a half through the 36k mile warranty. Everyone who knows how I drive says they are waiting to see my truck fall apart. I think the best way to explain how I drive is to say that I drive my truck like its a monster truck, yet it's not. Yes it's been on two wheels and even airborne and just keeps going. I feel this truck rides low, bottoming over standard size curbs. I should have gone for 4x4 but I couldn't afford it at the time I bought the truck. Driving noise is noticable but tolerable. When test driving this concerned me, now I just accept it as a characterstic of the truck. The GM radio is adequate for most but I replaced mine for something a little louder with 2-10's behind the seat I moved the tool kit for easy access and was able to install 2-6 1/2's below the stick shift. Summary: Altogether, I am satisified with the Silverado. It has been dependable and I hope it will last to see 200,000 miles. |

Ride's beautifully, quiet, and has a ton of torque through lower gears. Shift's into 4-wheel drive smoothly and has great traction. Wonderful on the highway's. Beautiful paint job and plenty of room inside. A/C and heater/defrost work great. "Ok" gas milage for a truck. Looks sharp going down the road.
Weakness:
Beside's the problem I mentioned at the top of this article. If you install an aftermarket stereo it has to go in the center of the dash (under the two vent's) and it's hard to reach when driving so It's a good excuse for getting a stereo with remote control. A little too much plastic on the dash. Turning radius could be better. Like most people that own a mid-1990's truck on here I'm very happy with my truck. I've owned it for a little under 3 years now and it's only been in a repair shop once to get the timing reset because of a little design flaw that GM made on a connector that the coolant hose connect's to on the back of the intake manifold. So, I had to remove the distributer to get the manifold off and the mark I left on the distributer accidentally got rubbed off. The problem that started this off was a little metal connector that tends to corrode after awhile from high heat and pressure and finally breaks off at the base of the manifold. Most of the time (I'm told by mechanic's) you have to pull the whole intake manifold off to get the remaining part out. Well, with my usual luck the extracter's didn't back the remaining part out with the manifold on the engine, so I took it off of the engine and proceeded to fix it myself to save me the repair cost's. But, this obviously wasn't a serious mechanical failure. It was an $8 dollar part that caused a lot of inconvenience for such a seemingly insignificant part. Otherwise, my only expenses beside's that incident is just your regular preventative maintenance. I purchased this truck with 89,000 miles on it and it was used to haul a fifth-wheel trailer and you can't find one drop of oil anywhere underneith the engine. Look's like new under the hood. I couldn't be happier with the ride. Similar Products Used: 1978 4x4 Chev Blazer 1975 4x4 Chev Stepside |
