The 5.3L engine is well sized for the truck, BUT it's hard to believe that it's really putting out the advertised 300HP. The truck bed exterior is ABS plastic. It saved me on repair bills a few times already. No dings on this puppy.
Weakness:
As often advertised, there's wind noise on the windshield and the big ugly, stubby, XM antenna. The top rubber seal on the windshield flip/flaps in the 60mph+ cruise. Also, the engine light keeps on coming and off. The dealer replace the coils. Once home, the light came back on. Then it came off after about 10 starts. Today, it came back on, after being off for 2 months. There's also a slight jerk and thud kinda noise when it shifts to second gear. Outward appearance looks good. The leather interior and the Bose speaker/radio is impressive. I like the stepside styling and looks. The 4WD is responsive and handles well in the snow and slippery wet roads. |

Strength:
Great compromise between efficiency and hp. Never any problems pulling larger ski boats or trailers. engine/tranny are excellent at 100K miles. still original shocks too, but probably will replace soon. original brake pads lasted over 50K. I love the 4 wheel disc brakes. 100K miles now, i'm sure i'll still be driving it at 200K.
Weakness:
I ordered the truck, so I assumed it would have an armrest in the front middle seat, but it does not fold down. I have had trouble with a defective front passenger seat not folding forward, and then I replaced it when the seatbelt was defective. The warranty did NOT help. Also, 40/20/40 design front seat is bad because of large gaps between sections where seatbelt goes down to floor. Always lose change, sunglasses, pens, checkbook into "the bottomless pit" Original manufacturer's tires were terrible wet or dry. I had a hydroplaning accident. I've also had trouble with gages. Gas gage sticks on E sometimes, and recently odometer and gear indicator have not been illuminated. DO NOT EVER BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. IT IS A RIPOFF. 4.8L V8 is an excellent combination of efficiency and hp. I don't see much difference between Chevy and Ford, except Chevy looks better. Two of my friends with Dodge Rams are unsatisfied and have had tranny probs. no slip rear differential is great in mud, but bad on ice. Very roomy, more so than any other truck I've been in that is an extended cab. Very nice ride, smooth and quiet.
Weakness:
havent found any so far...hopefully Chevy will be true to me as it was with my last 1974 Chevy truck. We shall see. 2003 Chevy Silverado Extended cab. V6 (as I dont haul anything but in the bed of the truck, and this is plenty to do that) RWD shortbed. So far the truck is great. It only has 450 miles on it and the ride is very smooth. I am a little leary as I have read some bad things about Chevy as of lately. Similar Products Used: 1974 Chevrolet C10 Full size. AWESOME truck. |

Strength:
Comfortable ride, relatively quiet at cruising speed, has the 4 doors [ dog has his own window ], 5.3 has decent performance, good sound system, lots of available aftermarket assessories & performance equipment, eye-catching looks, resale higher than a Ford F-150.
Weakness:
Dealer service/competence, many 99-03 GM trucks have engines that knock when they are started cold [ mine doesn't ], transmissions are junk due to computer/transmission controls, drive-line problems, waterleaks/wind noise. Did I mention dealer service/incompetence? The new-design Silverado is a mix of ups & downs. I had my last truck 22 years but I doubt this one will last half that long. Right after purchase [ 11-7-00 ] the transmission shuddered 1st-2nd shift. Took it to dealers for the next year; told me that's the way they are. After 1 1/2 years & many owners screaming on the internet they finally found a fix. Then came the slip/delay on 1st-2nd shift. Found out how to fix that on internet truck forums. Had to tell dealer about the computer update for fix. Six months left on warranty & I refuse to pay $1200-$1500 for an extended warranty. Why should I have to pay extra for a warranty when Dodge has a 7 year/70,000 mile warranty? Over-all I suppose I'm happy with the truck; smooth ride, quiet cabin, adequate performance, comfortable seats, great design. Would I do it again? No! I'd buy a comparatively-equipped 96-98 with the Vortec 350 engine for about 1/3 the price of a new one; and you can work on it. I was working at the Chevy dealer body shop at the time and ordered this truck. Paid about $1,000 UNDER invoice. Similar Products Used: '78 GMC Shortbed [ hot rod ], 400 engine, Turbo 350 trans, 10 MPG. Damn I'd like to have that engine in this '01. |

Beautiful truck, great ride, outstanding power, all AMERICAN!!!!
Weakness:
The color that everybody has, you know. Does Chev really care that there trucks have so many problems,I guest not when you sell so many. Alright, Lets start out by saying that I now know what it's feels like to be a movie star, everytime I drive my Z71 Chev on the crowded highways of California I see trucks of all types speeding from behind, crossing lanes just to get a good look at my truck, what a great feeling i mean its a very nice truck with chrome grill guard, Leer bed cover, 20" wheels, and S/S Maap step bars, Hell i look at it a lot myself. But , getting down to the facts, this thing has givin me more heartburn than two hot dogs at Qualcomm Stadium, it all started with this knocking noise early in the morning at start-up, did i mention the Flow Master exhaust with chrome tips (slash cut), however its a little hard to pay much attention to the rear of the truck an that beautiful sound coming from those chrome exhaust tips when theres so much road work going on under the hood, at 5:00 am. Well off to work go, and I can know longer hear my engine over the wind coming in from the driverside window, see it doen't seal completey after the $300 repair, but i'm almost at work I think, see the digital mileage readout went out, oh you can get it to work if you hit the dash hard enough, but the wood grain trim I install tends to rattle on that high end Chev plastic. Finally at work I open my door to this cracking and popping sound coming from the hinges, I know lube, dosen't work Can't wait to start all over again after work. Similar Products Used: None. |

good looking, comfortable, spacious, great power for all I need.
Weakness:
drivers side daytime light out on nearly everyone I see-they replaced mine under warranty @ 36k miles. Trany stinks. Rear side windows don't stay shut tight-dealership drove sheetrock screws in to tighten them!!! (real neat, huh!) Always been a GM fan, now thinking twice-may need to go Mopar...bought the truck w. 4000 miles from dealer, took in @ 36k for trany issue-would 'jump' from first to second from 0 mph (4 spd auto trany-used to be smooth). Dealer did replace PCM valve, which helped, but imtermitant jumps still happened. Took it back @ 51k because it was getting BAD. This time dealer takes trany apart and finds 'a bunch of debris' in houseing-wants to charge me for new trany. Had they tore into it first time, GM warranty would have covered it, now...best deal offered was I pay 1/3 cost parts and labor. Gas mileage is good, nice looking
Weakness:
Front seats cannot adjust to comfort - back seats are uncomfortable as well- air whistles around drivers window, no mirror on drivers side My husband bought a new Silverado-extended cab in May of 2000. I mainly use it to drive back and forth to work. I have kept it looking like new inside and out. I loved it at first, and we have taken several trips to the east coast since we purchased the truck. The engine/power is fine. Has always responded good to acceleration - but not too long after the 36,000 warranty went out last fall, some things started happening; like the accelerator pedal sticking pretty bad (dealership says carbon buildup - have talked to other Chevy truck owners who have the same prob with accelerator pedal-$80 to repair), the fuel module went out, now we never know exactly how much gas we have ($600 to repair) a resistor in the AC went out ($90 to repair), a sensor went out in the coolant tank ($90 to repair), a front running light went out and we have a mysterious thump from the rear that occasionally happens on startup. For a truck not even 3 years old - this sucks. And I will tell you that I will NOT have another Chevrolet truck. I'm ready for a trade right now, and although I have always liked Chevrolet trucks, if this is what I will have to put up with, no thanks. Plus the dealership is snobby. I won't buy a Ford either, so will be looking at Dodge. Similar Products Used: I have never driven a truck before. |
