Strength:

Good price for the way it is equipped. They are even cheaper now then when I bought mine. It''s loaded with all the goodies ,but leather which I don''t like anyway! I love the heated mirrors and foglights, plus the posi reara axle on the Westvirginia mountains.

Weakness:

Engine rattles between 1800-2000 RPM and I have been told it''s "normal" At times it is so loud it can be heard over the stereo and heater! There is a service bulletin on the noise. It says that it covers 1992-2002 4300 engines and G.M, doesn''t have a fix and won''t authorize attempting to repair it! So beware is considering buying one with the 4300. Drive it a long time till it''s real hot and check for engine noise by applying the brake ,place the trans in gear. Then apply throttle til you get the engine in the 1600-2000 RPM range and listen carefully with the windows up and the radio and heater off. If you buy one with this noise in it. Your in for a fight! I''ll be taking G.M. to arbitration soon. I can''t believe they''ve sold this engine for ten years knowing it has this problem and they refuse to anything to try and fix it!

I love''d this truck, but it is going to be a short affair. I shopped around and test drove Dakotas and Nissan. I saw the S-10 and fell in love. It is equipped with everything but the kitchen sink, runs great. With good power. Now the bad news, Lots of squeaks and rattles in the interior, all have been fixed but one. I''ve driven it twice on long trips pulling a small utilty trailer and average 18 mpg. Not as good as my 4.0 Cherokee, but I can live with it.Fuel gauge is strange and inaccurate at times. engine has a Loud rattle in it from 1600-2000 RPM more on that later. Paint is weak and chips easily. Front tires want to shimmy on bumps. No cup holders for rear seat area, but it has four in the front! Who thought up that one? rear seat doesn''t fold up out of the way like the other brands of crewcabs. I like the comfort of the interior. I''m 6''2" and I can leave the seat one notch forward, unlike the Jeep that always left me wanting more leg room. The ride was stiff when I got it ,but has softened up now at 10,000 miles, still rides firm though.

This truck was a steel I bought it with 73,000 Miles on it. It came with new brakes, New Eddlebrock IAS Shocks, fairly new stainless steel custom dual exhaust and a half @$$ed rebuilt transmission. Beside the transmission there are no complaints, it loses a lot of hp to the rear wheels.

could use more topend but has great lowend tourqe

I have owned my S10 for almost 6 years. The person that I got it from bought it from a AAA auction. It was a rollover. I am real happy with it. Sence I owned it I have replaced the clutch twice (the first time I bought a reconditioned one from Napa, junk only lasted two weeks) I had to replace the altinator (I think too many high speed mudpuddles) It was my first car (I live in the dessert and some times thought that it was a 4x4, a lot of hard off road miles) The rear axel bearing went out and I drove on them for about two years and then decided to replace the rearend because it was cheaper to buy a $200 parts truck than to rebuild the old one. The only complaint that I have had was that the gauges dont work. The only ones that work are the ampmeter, and the speedometer (it is off because the rearend was not a stock one). I now have 116000 miles on it and still running great. No oil leaks or burning and great gass milage. I have had to do way less work to this truck than I have had to do with my 97 malibu, which is in the shop as I write this letter with majore work to be done. Back to the old faithful S10

Model Reviewed: S10 LS Ext Cab

Strength:

It''s a solid little truck. The V6 runs strong and smooth. The AC works great, and the power accessories are nice. Overall, I feel it''s the best bang for the buck for less than $20k (when it runs right).

Weakness:

Remember what I was saying about my other truck? Well, I''m less than 5000 miles into the S10 and the tranny is already starting to slip, and other times it grabs too hard and spins the tires for no reason. WTF? The driver window won''t go all the way up unless the passenger window is down. Oh yeah, the "extended" part of the cab is worthless, but I knew that going in. The stock tires spin in the slightest bit of water. The lumbar support dial in the driver seat is worthless.

I bought this truck new in Aug 2001. It''s fully loaded, including the chrome appearance package, power everything, etc. I had a ''96 GMC 1500 prior to the S10, and it was in the shop for a total of 8 weeks for random misfires and tranny problems. I was hoping history wouldn''t repeat itself with the S10. Let''s just say I''m trading it in for a Dodge Ram this summer.

Model Reviewed: S-10 LS Ext Cab 2.2L 4cyl.

Strength:

It''s been extremely reliable for me. The complete design is great for it''s time. The interior is simple but effective for a pick up. There are many upgrades available for the S-10 family. I recommend the manual over the automatic in any 4cyl. Handling is better with aftermarkey wheels. Off the line speed is good. Gas mileage is great. Clutch and shifter is smooth. Steering radius is great for a longer compact truck. Stock ride was relatively smooth.

Weakness:

Not much stock HP for a small and heavy truck. Stock suspension sways too much on turns. Stock wheels could be improved. Brakes with stock wheels lock too easily. Rear suspension starts to sag after a while.

I don''t really have to many complaints. I think this truck is great! I''ve been good to it and it''s been good to me. I''ve always wanted an S-10 and I don''t regret getting one. I bought it with 31k miles and now I''m around 80k. It runs like a champ. You can''t really expect much out of these little trucks but with a few mods, it helps. I bought it stock and have added quite of few aftermarket products. I''ve lowered the suspension and wheels. A Gibson exhaust and a K&N filter give it a smaller kick and a great sound. There are a lot of products available even for the 4 banger. So far I''ve had to replace the battery, u-bolts, shocks, catalytic converter and windsheild wiper motor. Obviously no car is perfect. Wear and tear are apart of the deal, so stop complaining! Overall the truck is great. I''ll be driving it for a long time.

Strength:

Well, I really can''t think of any that stick out in my mind but if I had to choose something it would be the looks.

Weakness:

2.2L engine(get the V-6) cheap interior Cheap paint

Overall the truck is not that bad. the 2.2 has some power without the a.c on so it is not that bad in the winter but during the summer months, it sucks. I really hate the cheap interior and all the cheap plastice that is coming off after only 5 months. the paint sucks as it has chiped and scatched everywhere. I plan on trading this truck in for a V-6 s-10 when I get the money so hopefully I''ll like that one better.
