Strength:

I feel the strengths are the room and comfort, and versitility.

Weakness:

I agree with the others that have wrote reviews, there are some rattles in the door panels that can tend to drive a person nuts.

I'm a real fan of this truck. I do some light hauling, my job takes me off road at times, and there's plenty of room for the kids. Even my wife enjoys driving my truck. Its got all the bells and whistles you could ask for and plenty of power to go with it. It's truely become quite the fun vehicle with a work attitude.

No power, constantly breaking down, doesn't keep it's value.

It's a piece of junk. I have 63,000 miles on it. I have the 4 cylinder, rear wheel drive regular cab version, and in the past 2 years, I've had to replace the transmission, all 4 shocks, 2 rotors, 4 brake pads, the exhaust system, u bolt, and it just broke down on me again, which will cost $360 to fix. In the past 2 years, I've spent $2660 in repairs, not including regular maintenance. The vehicle is worth less than $3000.

Model Reviewed: Chevy S10 LS Ext Cab

Strength:

Perhaps the most pleasantly surprising difference between the S10 & my previous Ranger is how much more smoothly the Chevy engine runs when accelerating. I wasn't expecting that. It's also quieter when punching it, too. Shifting from parking into gear is also much slicker - I never hear the universal joint engaging like I always could with the Ranger. And even the parking break release is night & day superior to the Ford. I love the 3rd door, something my Ranger didn't have. It makes for placing and retrieving stuff much easier. Speaking of the doors, there is a more vaccuum-like sound when closing the doors of this vehicle, as opposed to the Ranger, indicating a superior fit & finish to the exterior. I'm also pleased with the quality of the stock Delco CD/Stereo. Nothing to write home about, but it's fairly clear & powerful, and definitely an upgrade over the stock unit from the Ranger.

Weakness:

One glaring and one subtle weakness, with the more noticeable one being the interior's fit and finish. Altho the seats are overall more comfortable than those of the Ranger, one immediately detects the squeaks and squeals of the side panels when going over bumps or when the power windows move up & down. It's the classic cheezy GM craftsmanship at its purist. The more subtle weakness I've detected is whenever I accelerate from a dead stop, there's an ever-so-slight shimmy to the engine for about the first 2000 RPM. It only seems to do it from a dead stop, and only if I accelerate from such. If I let the truck move forward by idling and then hitting the pedal, there is no shimmy. I have plenty of warranty left, and it's my intention to bring this to GM serive department's attention, but it may turn out to be no biggie.

I've had my 4.3L S10 for a little over a month now, and I must say I'm very pleased with it so far. My previous truck was a '96 Ford Ranger 4.0L, and when it was totaled in an accident, it forced me to go shopping for another truck. Suffice to say, I was quite happy with my Ranger - they're good trucks, and I had no real complaints with the one I had. To make a long story short, I was presented a golden opportunity to buy the S10 at a fantastic offer, otherwise I would have probably continued searching for a Ranger. I say this is only to let you know that I'm not anti-Ford or pro-Chevy, nor vice-versa (I know there are a lot of loyalists on both sides), and that my evaluation is objective. But I've got to say how pleased I am at the way the S10 performs vs. the Ranger. Granted, all things being equal, one would expect a 4.3L to be slightly faster than a 4.0L. But it's my opinion that the S10 is even faster beyond the slight edge it has in engine size. It seems to have better torque as well, altho I have no hard numbers on that. It's a smoother, more comfortable ride overall. Thumbs up to Chevy on a nice pickup.

Strength:

Good ride that lasts for many years. Motor keeps a consistent idle even at 100,000 + miles. Suspension is tight and the truck handles excellent in the know (without the stock tires!)

Weakness:

Fuel pump took a dump at 58k miles and left me stuck on the road, but at least is was cheap to replace. Stock tires are slippery to the point of being unsafe.

When I purchased my S-10 in 1998 at I soon realized that I paid about 1.5K over the retail price and was stuck with it. When the odometer reached 120K miles and all I ever needed to replace was the fuel pump, I was chocked! This dam truck ran like new at 105K when I traded it in for a newer model. I gave Fords a try and when the motor was stalling at stop signs at 56k miles, I realized that I fell victim to the famous flaw found in most ford motors..

Won''t die. Big cargo bed. Like the boxy body style (unlike the newer aerodinamic ones).

Weakness:

Loud engine. Lack of "get up and go" power (which is caused by the gearing of the transmission, good for hauling loads of stuff, but bad for getting somewhere in a hurry). The only gauge that works is the Speedometer.

This truck has so much wrong with it that I''d be completely nutz to try and fix it all, BUT (and that''s a big BUT) I''ve had it for over three years and it hasn''t broken down yet. I love it because it''s an old junker that won''t die and it''s great for camping, and hauling the canoe.

Everything is great except having to remove my oil my motor

Weakness:

Nont except the weakness in the oil pan metal

The only problem with my S10 is that in order to get the oil pan off you have to remove the hole engine. Know your probley wondering, "Why does he want to take his oil pan off." Well it''s is because i have a hole in it. I dont know how it got their but it''s there. And i have spent 2 months trying to fix it other ways. But it looks like my last resort is to pull the motor.

Strength:

4.3L Vortec (4-bangers a joke) firm/stiff ride seat''s are awsome (lumbar support''s nice) dash configuration 4 wheel drive sweet looking (especially in all black)

Weakness:

slippery on wet surfaces

I think this truck is fantastic. Mine has 83000 miles on it and it drives like it''s friggin new. Everything works flawlessly, and I love having the 4 wheel drive. It looks great too. My truck was already stripped of all it''s badging and decals when I bought it. It looks so much better without the obcenely large ZR2 sticker at the back of the bed. The raise suspension package looks tuff, which I like a lot. People complain about these trucks rattling and squeaking inside, but not me. Sure, maybe over broken pavement, or rippling dirt roads, but what would you expect. The dash isn''t made out of cotton. After driving a 95 Grand Am for 3 years, this truck is music to my ears. Everything is very solid. The desing of the dashboard is excellent. It looks clean, strong, and every control is logically placed. Personally, I think the sound system could use some work. If only I had the money to modify....There''s virtually no bass. If you turn it up to much, the speakers distort big time. Some new speakers and a couple of tweaters behind and above the seats would do nicely I think. This truck handles suprisingly well too. Body roll is almost non-existant, making it feel much more stable around corners. I swear I feel more comfortable taking corners at speeds, than I did in my G.A. One of my only complaints is the tires. The 31 in. BFGoodriches off less than adequate traction. They slip easily on dry pavement even. They''re suprisingly bad in the rain and snow. Strange considering how nobby they are. I would think they would perfom respectably in the snow, but no. It''s nothing the 4 wheel drive can''t rectify though. However, I love being able to burn the tires all through 1st gear. The 4.3L, with 190 horses and 275 ft. pounds, pumps out impressive amounts of power. Decent acceleration is effortless. This is by far the niceset auto I''ve ever owned. I bought it for 15600 out the door (sticker was 13400), w/ no money down, and I''m payin'' 294/month. Pretty good deal in my opinion. This truck feels like a tank after the noise maker I was driving before.

Replaceing Clutch and AC leek

I got this truck after high school and has been a great truck until about 4 years, The AC has a leak and every place i go to wants to replace the entire unit for 1000 dollars, the release bearing in the clutch went out for 500 dollars then six months later the hydrolics in the clutch went out for another 500 dollars, not bad considering that ive been driving it for 5 years it stills looks new and runs better than ever after the few repairs it was definitly worth fixing it up. With over 70000 miles on it mostly highway it still feels brand new!! I am going to keep this truck until it just dies!

More acceleration would be nice, and stronger axils in the front. All the rattles in it from loud stereo, and the stupid paint is flaking on one side from the bad color that year. also starting to have trouble with diverside door, but nothing too bad

My little S-10 has suprised both me and all of my friends many times in the booneys off roading. it is one of the few with a five speed manual and i love it to death. Has a rebuilt 2.8 in it, and i have pulled out many guys with big blocks in the woods.
