Strength:

Comfortable, smooth ride, powerful (for its size) 2.2l, great braking, have a killer sound system in it, Although not many available mods, power can be hopped up comparable to that of the 4.3 by adding intake, exhaust, chip, pulleys, throttle body, headers (available in the near future)etc. better than other 4banger pickups. matching fiberglass canopy makes it a beautiful truck, and useful for moving in the rain. Excellent in snow for a 2wd, take it up to the mountain in the winter and has no problems (the canopy helps). Dont really need 4wd. Excellent Gas mileage, gets 22 mpg avg. the third door is very useful, the handle can be a bit tricky though, I have broken one already. The clearcoat metallic paint looks gorgeous when clean. Best looking stock rims on any pickup (the LS ones not the base model ones). They look great lowered, they look great lifted, an they look great normal as long as you replace the tires

Weakness:

4 cylinder + 4400lbs = slow. Stock tires were very poor in any weather so I replaced them asap. Would have been better off with a stick.

I have put about 30,000 miles on it in about 2 years and it has been great. I can manage to get some $$ I would like to do some mods.
Check out the 2.2l S-10 mods forum at coolboard.com. I highly recommend S-10's as a commuter or a first car. They are definitely worth every penny.

Model Reviewed: Xtreme

Strength:

Torque, comfortability and the zQ8 does the trick on the Xtreme. I have had this truck for a year and I have loved every bit of it. I have the 4.3L and it's a good strong engine.

Weakness:

The only thing I don't like about my truck and I mean the only thing is that I have an auto and I would die for a stick. But when I got it I called around and there were only two 4.3L's in Florida when I got it. They both happened to be in Jacksonville and one was in a regular S-10 and the other in a black Xtreme, but they were both auto's so I paid 19,000 for my black Xtreme which has everything you could think of in it.

I have put exhaust, intake, and pulleys on it and it will run with most imports out there. I couldn't think of having anything else unless I dropped a roller motor in it.

Strength:

DEPENDABLE!Never left us stranded,only routine repairs,brakes,tires,battery,shocks,idler arm

Weakness:

Speedo quit after 2yrs with 52000 miles on it,expensive so got a GPS instead for same price, more accurate too :}Cheep window glass, cracked with a pebble hit, catalytic converter sheild rattles ,i welded it ,broke em and rattles still.A/C clutch rattles but we use it a lot in hot weather, consider it reasonable though for age/miles.

Paint still shines(wax 6 months or so)interior excellent,no seat tears but getting a bit firm with age.Great mileage, fairly peppy but no passing power, will go a comfortable 80 miles/hr.This is the most dependable vehicle we have ever owned, bought new.Did need a new clutch this year, only 275 bux installed. No experience with dealer cause nothing ever went wrong except speedo which was 400+ to fix so who needs one anyhow(Get the Garmin GPS,way more fun!)No engine repairs at all and it has a ton of miles on it.
Cheap to insure, drive and maintain.Sorry to hear newer ones dont seem as good, esp since my neice cost bought a new one based on our experince.
LOVE IT!BEST VEHICLE FOR DEPENDABILITY/VALUE I HAVE EVER OWNED,on 1-5 scale rates a 10 overall.Really.

Strength:

*Good gas mileage
*Large gas tank, approx. 360 miles per tank for every day driving and over 400 miles on the highway.
*rear sliding window.
*easy to read guages.

Weakness:

Truck bed does not align with cab of truck.
Lost paint shine around 60k miles (red).
Poor placement of the cupholders.

This truck has been good to me for the last 8 years. The only complaint I have is the quality of paint as the shine was lost miles ago. I bought the truck used in December 1993 before heading off to college with just under 18k miles and currently have it for sale with just over 160k on the odometer. With what I know now, I would buy the truck again but would prefer AC and an extended cab. I put a fiberglass cap on to haul my possession and it made for great use of the truck bed during all seasons.

Strength:

The power and speed is amazing! I have never seen a better truck. Blows away the so called magnum V-8 that dodge has. Very high tech. Good tires! Peels out like nothing else. Fast as lighting and i didn't even have to put any custom modifactions to make it fast. Good gas mileage.

Weakness:

Well i have only one that isn't real important. i found a piece of paper in the front seat that the dealer left there. The grill should be chrome but that is just a personal thought.

This V-6 sonoma beat out the brand new dakota at everything. Belive me general motors knows how to make a high quality truck. Why put in a weak V-8 when you could have a V-6 with more power. Every time i see someone with a sonoma i say "Theres a man (or women) who really wants to get the best out of there vehicle." You can't go wrong with a sonoma or s10 both are very well made and i have had no problems with my truck and i don't expect to. I would recomend this truck to anyone who wants a reliable tow/work truck or someone who would ever want to race a truck. I love this truck and will not ever buy anything that isn't from GM.

Model Reviewed: Long Bed

Strength:

Body hasnt rusted. Interior is still in good shape for its age. Good gas mileage. Tough, durable, useable. Still runs and in good shape for a 308K mile vehicle.

Weakness:

Always something going wrong from day one. Currently on its second engine and may go on third if we decide to keep it. Cheap Chevy interior, sound system, what system? theres just a sound. AC quit a long time ago. Weak on torque 2.8L V6 motor and long-throw, floppy and unprecise 5 spd manual tranny. Slow acceleration. Tall people avoid this vehicle at all costs!!

Stopped going to the dealer ages ago. Easy to work on without being a trained mechanic. Cheap and readily available parts. Keeps on running but may have to ditch it for newer wheels. Miles keep piling on and oil keeps leaking. Since its been around for what seems like forever I recommend it for those who need a work truck for the long haul. I have test driven the newer S-10's and they are better in every way. But the current body style is not as durable as the 80's boxy design. The 1995's and early current body style models are coming apart when mine just started going to heck 10 yrs ago at 13 yrs old. However, this review is for an OLD and extremely USED. There WILL be problems and they WONT go away.

Strength:

Nice power with V6, have no problem with passing. Having 3 cigarette lighters is nice. Like 6 speakers, but the speaker quality can be better. Like tachometer with automatic. Never breaks down. Rides pretty well. Durable in vehicle accidents. A/C can create North Pole-like conditions and the heater can bake you to a crisp. Bucket seats are really comfortable. The center console storage compartment has a lot of room.

Weakness:

Crappy gas mileage, I get 16mpg. Glove box only has room for the manual, nothing else. The ABS is way too sensitive, specially in dirt, I've nearly hit way too many telephone poles. really bad traction, especially in the rain. I went around a corner at 45 and spun into a ditch. Right rear window creeks so bad it drives me crazy. #1 spark plug too hard to reach. Can't turn off the ventilation system, so outside smells and fumes always come in. Jumper seats in ext cab are too small and cramped. Only expect children to fit in them. Would like to have the option to turn off the daytime running lamps. The turning radius can definately be improved.

I bought this truck used in 1999 for 9 grand. It had 76k on it, and the check engine light came on about 10 minutes after I drove it off the lot. It turned out an injector was plugged. Then at 90k the alternator went out. It was a little pricey...$400. Other than this, I have had no problems with my truck. Ive had to replace the brakes once in 40k miles. Paint isn't peeling. This has been a pretty reliable truck for me. I always forget that I'm charging my cell phone on the cigarette lighter but the battery never drains. I ran it almost completely out of water and it did not overheat or develop any problems.

I recently wrecked my s-10 and it protected me very well. I went into a ravine at 45 mph and suffered no injuries. The damage was minimal for the type of impact that occurred. I am really proud how well my little truck held up through the accident.

Great mpg's! I average 24. The 2.8 V6 has never left me stranded. I had it in the shop twice for warranty work but that was 8 years ago. Good power with the stick but you have to shift aggressively. Very smooth ride and completely predictable handling. I have the long bed which helps with hauling duties.

Weakness:

Some would say the power of the 2.8 liter. I also wish it sat about 2" taller. No real complaints though, I love the truck.

I purchased this truck brand new in the summer of 91. I have 99,500 miles on it and it runs better than the first day I had it. I commute 30 minutes each way to work but I only have to fill up every 2 weeks (400 miles per tank) The seating position is perfect for my 6ft. frame. There's nothing to go wrong like 4-wheel ABS, airbags, power everything. This is a truck not some french poodle. Besides a muffler, brakes, battery and two dash lights. I have done nothing but change the oil, wash/wax it, and keep it full of gas. It's starting to show a little rust now along the bottom which bums me out because I haven't had a car payment in 7 years. I feel sticker shock coming on.

This truck kicks some serious butt. The power is awesome and the offroad use hasn't stopped me yet. For a first vehicle for a 15 year old, i love it!. In the last 8 months ive added 3k onto it, and have loved every one.
Theres plenty of room to cram camping stuff and your buddies, and enough little nooks and crannies to add more.

Weakness:

There are only a few problems that ive had, one was a broken steering pump (which happened when 4bying), a little oil leakage, and horrid gas milage.

Love my S-10, this may be the only model of vehicle that i will ever own.

4.3 Vortec has lots of power, will surprise many kids that want to race. Great stereo system. Limited Slip rear end gives great traction. great ride. sharp turning radius, no problem manuvering. many up grades for the motor, but stock its still pretty fast for an SUV. Will light the tires with out a problem. Sharp looking truck with the Tahoe package.

Weakness:

Motor ticks a lot, but valve train is all up to spec nothing is worn. Kinda crappy gas mileage in the city, pretty good on the high way. Gauges could be better, something ud expect in a chevette. Truck is excellent though dont get me wrong. Very sporty lookingm if you buy one you wont be dissapointed

I give this truck great reviews, Its been great. Some things could be improved but it still is better than all the rest.
