Strength:

Decent sound system for a pickup truck- that''s about it.

Weakness:

You name it.

This truck is junk. I wouldn''t recommend it to my worst enemy. It has no power (4cyl) and it gets terrible gas mileage (12-20 mpg)! I didn''t want to spend the money for a 6 cyl. or 4WD at the time and now I am stuck with this underachieving GM product that has neither power nor economy on its side. Also, the brakes seem to have a problem with them but the dealer "can''t find" anything wrong with them. DO NOT BUY THIS TRUCK! I have driven GM products almost exclusively for 14 years. I may buy a Honda or a Toyota next time.

easy to haul this around in.

Weakness:

trim panels on third door noisey 4 cyc powerless

Bought in march 2001, bought this as a 2000 left over had no problems until 2000 miles when third door started to squek. Took to dealer and they instaled a shim, problem fix. Now 3000 miles loud cracking noise comeing from hing on drivers door. Took back they said all s-10 and blazers do this. So as a result of this I would never recomend buying a s-10 or a blazer, Unless you put a loud system in to dround out this noise.

Power, comfort, appearance

Weakness:

Shimmy (vibration) @ 1850 RPM

Shimmy (strongest @ 1850 RPM) over-rides desirable features of this 4.3L V6 w/auto trnny. Dealer and Chevrolet say it is "normal." Taking them to arbitration soon. Salesman claimed it was from tires developing flat spots sitting on lot, and that it would disappear. 5500 miles and still shaking.

Model Reviewed: Chevy S-10 LS - 2WD

Strength:

*Comfortable interior
*Leg room
*CD Player

Weakness:

*Only the smallest of people could sit in the middle
*Repeat mechanical problems
*Underpowered four cylinder engine
*Average speaker quality
*CD Player gets hot to the touch
*Subtle signs of cheap build quality

At first I was estatic to get an S-10. After being in a car accident in a Chevy Metro (damn, now that car was a dog!) and being banged up I felt I needed something more substantial. So, I got the S-10. Now I'm beginning to have second thoughts.

I love my S-10 dearly, and it is a great truck. I've hauled many things in the back and I'm very thankful to own a truck. But around 6400 miles things started to get rough. The check engine light came on after I filled it up with Union 76 gas I got at a Circle K. At first I thought it was bad gas, as Circle K stations are known for using. I also checked the users manual to see what could be wrong. I tried messing with the gas cap and everything the book suggested. I finally took in to the local dealership and I later found out that the control valve in the transmission was bad. Damn. It was at that time I made a promise to myself. If the S-10 ends up with more than three major problems (including the one I just had it in for), I was going to trade it in.

Well, it looks like I'm closer to trading it in. Today, on the 12th of July I took it in because it looked like something was oozing out around the inner rim on the wheel on the front left side. Also, after I drove it the last time they had it, it had a very pleasant high pitched whistle coming from the A/C around 70MPH and above. If the two complaints I took the truck in for turn out to be serious, it's gone. I can't afford to constantly have my truck in the shop every month, and the dealer having to keep it for a couple of days everytime!

If it wasn't for the problems I've had with my truck, I'd have a lot more confidence in it. But as it stands I don't feel like I can trust my truck. I don't know what is going to happen next, or when. With the amount of electronics and computers on the dang thing, a lot of things could go wrong.

Don't get me wrong, the S-10 is a great truck and is fun to drive. When it's not in the shop ;-). I'v heard of many people owning an S-10 and not having any mechanical problems. I may hold on to the truck, and pray that there are no more problems. I already know what I'm going to trade my S-10 in for if necessary. A 2001 or 2002 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner DoubleCab.

Model Reviewed: S-10 2wd 150hpV6 5-speed

Strength:

Reliable. In 5 years / 70k miles I've only taken it to a shop for corroded battery terminals.

Paint. It keeps it's shine. Looks as good as it did when I just got it. Same with the interior.

Good visibility

Fits a 6' guy very nicely.

Weakness:

Poor handling. It REALLY wallows into the turns. I put on new shocks and a new sway bar right after I bought the truck to deal with the problem. The stock suspension was a real embarrasment on off-road/gravel as well.

Poor acceleration and fuel economy. The truck gets 17mpg regular driving and is slow with the 150hp engine. Maximum usable rpm is only 3000 or so. The engine is capable of whipping the car around, but it doesnt rev high or freely. Where does all that gas go?

Poor brakes. The absolute WORST feature of this truck. You've got to really lay on the pedal to get some decent braking. Also, I doubt that the rear drum brakes are even mildly effective. After 70,000 miles there is quite some pad left on the original rear brakes.

Wires in the engine bay are quite corroded.

Alot of squeaking and road/engine noise, too.

However, I never expected a truck to excel in any of these areas, so it is somewhat forgivable.

I bought this car retail from the factory back in '95 and would do it all over again. It's a great midsize car capable of hauling anything a college aged student could need. Reliability as been especially good to me as this truck only needed basic maintenance like oil changes and air filter changes. So much so that I consider it my 'friend'!! Performance and handling and fuel economy arent good at all, but then again it is a truck.

One thing out of character about this truck is it's flimsy sheet metal. Merely leaning on flat areas like the door or roof is enough to put a dent into it. Low impact (<5 mph) is enough to put a noticable and permanent dent on either bumper. This car needs heavier (chrome?) bumpers.

Sadly, this truck was totalled in a typical driver-side offset frontal crash at about 30-35 mph. It didnt fair very well compared to the other car, but I got about 50% of the trucks purchase value back. My next truck will definitely be a Chevy, although I might try a Silverado this time around.

Strength:

Engine, styling, wheels are one of a kind.

Weakness:

I didnt get the power package, which included pwr. windows and locks and cruise control and adjustible steering wheel. but i cant hold that against it. the engine is a bit loud the first time you start it in the morning, but then it warms up and is great.

I have had my truck for about 10 months now and have had zero problems with it. I have an extended cab 4.3L V-6. It rides great, a little rough, but what do you want, its a truck, not a lux. car. The engine is great, a bit rough going into second, but again its a truck, what do yoiu expect. The Xtreme package is great, turns a lot of heads too, there is not many of them around. It rides great on the highway and gets about 280-300 miles to a tank around the city and about 340-350 on the highway, which is very good for that big of an engine. Torque is great, could spin the 16's all day long if I wanted to. I love this truck so far, and I hope it does as well at it has for the next couple years(im leasing it).
