Strength:

Overall, I'm very pleased with the truck. I purchased this vehicle used from a GM dealer (it has been leased previously and well-cared for) in April 1999 with less than 45,00km on it (less than 30,000 miles), at about $10,000 less than a 1999 model with the same features was selling for at that time.

Lots of power, pulls a heavy load / trailer without any problems. Not as bad on gas as I had feared. Silverado package is nice -- bucket seats, cruise, power everything, CD player. So far it has proved to be reliable and relatively trouble-free mechanically.

The 5.7 / 350 engine "kicks ass" as my nephew would say.

Weakness:

My windshield wipers would intermittently just stop working. They progressively got worse, but would just as mysteriously start working again. I had them checked a couple of times -- motor was fine, switch was fine. In November 2000 during heavy rain my wipers stopped working unexpectedly at about 100kmh/65mph on a major highway. I could not see anything, but managed to exit the highway without a crash. Needless to say this is a serious safety hazard!

I soon learned that there had been a recall in 1998 for several model years of Chevy and GMC vehicles -- S/T and C/K series trucks and SUVs, for a problem with the windshield wiper circuit boards, #98043.

I contacted General Motors of Canada, who first told me that no such recall existed. Then I found the recall information on the Transport Canada web site. I called GM back, and they admitted, yes, there was a recall, but advised me that my truck's VIN was not included. So even though I apparently had the exact same defect -- faulty solder joints on the winshield wiper motor circuit board -- I had to pay to have it fixed myself.

I had this confirmed by a local GM dealership, who wanted to help but GM refused to budge and said that no, my VIN was not covered under the recall, so I had to pay and that it was probably not the same problem. My extended GMPP "Platinum Plus" extended warranty also refused to cover this defect repair - even though the warranty book clearly states that it covers the wiper motor. (Apparently the wiper motor circuit board which controls the wiper motors is not seen to be an actual component of the wiper motor!)

I had the circuit board replaced. $130.00 (Canadian) at a GM dealership. Took less than twenty minutes. But the problem is gone.

I asked for and was given back the old circuit board, which has since been forwarded by courier to Transport Canada for testing by an investigator.

Apparently the 1998 GM recall for this problem covered just over 71,000 vehicles in Canada -- but from info I've seen here and in the US on the Internet it seems much more widespread. There were nearly 100 complaints about the same thing on the NHTSA web site in the USA.

Transport Canada is gathering info with the hopes of expanding the recall.

If you live in Canada and have a problem with intermittent windshield wiper failures on your GM vehicle, contact Transport Canada. http://www.tc.gc.ca/en/menu.htm .

If you are in the USA, please file a complaint via the on-line NHTSA form at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/ivoq/default.htm .

You can also find information about his recall at All Data's web site, http://www.alldata.com .

THERE ALSO SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH FREQUENT 02 SENSOR FAILURES, AT ABOUT $300 A POP TO FIX -- NOT COVERED UNDER ORIGINAL NOR EXTENDED WARRANTY.

I now also hear horror stories about these trucks have sudden and unexpected transmission failures -- but so far my transmission works flawlessly.

Poor turning radius compared to newer models of same truck.

I wish it had four-wheel ABS and not just on the front.

I'm giving a four-star rating only because the problems I've had were relatively minor (altough I think the windshield wiper problem is a serious safety issue that GM needs to address before people are killed), and it is a pleasure to drive. The four-wheel drive is great in snow, and you can comfortably seat four adults (I have the extended cab). Front bucket seats with lumbar support are great -- with tilt steering, cruise, power accessories, power steering and ABS, this truck drives like a luxury car in many ways.

Durability, great truck, have had NO problems what so ever

Weakness:

Lack of power with a/c on. A little to small in the extended cab area to carry adults, great for smaller children that dont require a car seat.

Excellent all around in design and durability, great for off and on road use. I have carried twice the recommended payload with no problems.

This is a wonderful truck.
You can feel how tough it is as you drive it.
I am from the school of if you take care of it it will last.
So I dont beat the tar out of the truck,
but at times I needed to ask it to work hard and it did , like clock work.
The quality you can feel is built in compared to the Mopar I got rid of.
Very solid truck, very reliable.
Excellent in snow, a little weight over the rear and you hardly ever need 4 wheels.
When used , 4 wheels are smooth and grab real good.
Real good power,
My friend put an exhaust, Hi Pro. filter, and a hi pro. coil on his
Dodge 2 wheel drive and now just makes the power the GM 5700 v-8 makes.
The truck can fly!
Very smooth at with the needel burrowed out of sight.
The steering tightens up at higher speeds, i like the feel of that.
Im getting about 15- 17 MPG. but i drive it easy , i dont beat it.
I dont like the Bucket seats, I wish it was a split bench.
I dont like leather seats, wish they were cloth.
Brakes a little moshey at times.
Other than that Have no problems with the truck.
Design wasnt changed much, because people didnt want it changed , neither would I.
Just right how it is.
Excellent truck for anyone, I recomend it highly.

It was great to have a new truck. Expected that we would be happy but was extremely disappointed.

Weakness:

The first year and 1/2, though, engine sounded like a disel when starting up. Gunderson placed oversized bearings in motor. Now, at in the second year, had to have engine replaced. Now, transmission acting up. LEMON. UNHAPPY. CAR IS TWO YEARS' OLD AND ALREADY HAD TO REPLACE MOTOR. WOULD LIKE TO FIND AN ATTORNEY WHO SPECIALIZES IN LEMON LAW.

CHEVY'S MOTTO IS "BUILT TO LAST" BUT THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO OUR TRUCK. LEMON.

I would recommend this truck to anyone because there is little parts or places to fix or change and the first engine had over 145,000 miles on it
it was still going he had the engine partially rebuilt to last longer for me I am very grateful for that also the truck that he bought the 1993 model has over 200,000 miles on it and still going the only thing that needs replacing is oil tires wipers and gas and a good washing everyonce in awhile

Exterior gloss chips easily

It has been a decent truck for the price paid. No major repairs after 100k except having the rear wheel cylinder leak several times. The styling is still relatively attracting 10 years later. (unlike older Ford models). On close inspection, chevy trucks are cheap pieces of crap, but they are somehow able to remain reliable for many, many, years. I don't know how they do it? The build quality is constantly making me cringe.

It would make a good ranch utility truck, but for towing ya really need at least a V-8 350.

ever since i've owned it ,,it has made a whining noise, sounds like a power steering whine but thats not it.Had to have the steering wheel replaced after on year because of peeling.Same thing has happened with the new one. After 2 years the locking actuator for the front differential went bad.Retro fit it with an electric actuator at my expense.3 years and the wires for the headlights started shorting out from using the tilt steering wheel, and the air bag light stays on all the time. Id like to hear from anyone with similar problems,,, bettencourt@csd.com
