I have absoltely Loved This truck. It pulls my 24' fifth wheel great. I have also hauled tractors and other farm equipment with no problem. My wife drives it as a family car with three car seats in back and one in front along with me and her comfortably. I have had no major breakdowns. Or serious problems. It handles great in the snow and wet conditions. I have never been stuck and that is saying alot for where I drive.
Weakness:
The Thermal 4X4 Actuator is garbage. This is the only problem I have had. I knew they were junk because of problems friends have had. So it did not surprise me it just gave me the excuse to replace it with a "4x4 Posi-Lok system". I would recommend this truck to anyone that needs a real truck. Just do your self afavor and order a Posi-Lok system for it. The system is a cable actuater and it works instantly, in cold weather, in mud, it even stays engaged when you turn your truck off. You can also use your 4 low without the front axle engaged. Giving you 2 low wich is very useful when trailering. The people at Posi-Lok were great to work with also. Reliable! Easy and cheap to maintain. Good looking. Good resale value.
Weakness:
Guages, radio, TBI, The alternator is just a bad design, it was used on several different models and it just won't last. I am on my 4th one, luckily when I bought the first one I got the one with the lifetime warranty so I have only paid for one. I bought this truck used in 1995. It was stock except for the wheels. The first thing I did was take that sorry radio/cassette player out and install an alpine. It has those guages that are "reversed" meaning the needle isn't really a needle, it is behind the guage face. It isn't bad, but they only did that for a couple of years because normal guages are a lot easier to read. It has throttle body injection (TBI), they should have used the multi-port like they put on the z28's because it isn't very responsive. The 350 engine was kind of weak in 1989 too, only 210hp from the factory, but it does make good torque and it will pull anything. If you add a cat-back exhaust, this truck sounds AWESOME with no other modification. After 80K+ (152K total) miles the only things I have had to do to it is replace the alternator, the starter (1 time) and the water pump (typical of a chevy). Never had any major repairs, and it has never stranded me. I love this truck. I gave 10 grand for it in 95 and I am going to drive it until it falls apart! Good resale value too, if you don't decide to keep it forever. Similar Products Used: First truck ever. |

Vulgar Display of Power. Extremely reliable. Easy to maintain. The AC is still blowing cold and hard after 4.5 years without any maintenance. Easy to change oil and service brakes. Easy to lube the chasis. Easy to take apart dashboard to install aftermarket stereo system. No problem to pass anyone on the roadway.
Weakness:
The vents do not move around like I would like them to. The paint on the grill is peeling off. Paint on truck body chips easily. Just about every component that can leak fluids, does so at slow rates (transmission, engine oil, power steering). Ford makes a tougher exterior. Tension wheel on main belt squeaks loudly. Burns gas at a phenominal rate. 11-12 miles/gallon. I got a very good deal on this vehicle. I paid 11,500 for a 96 CK 2500 with 50k miles on it. I think the dealer had trouble getting rid of it because it did not have an extra cab. Similar Products Used: 86 GMC V-6. Basically, I would much rather my chevy. I haD PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION ON THE gmc BUT i NOTICED THAT THIS MODEL HAS A TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER. |

Strength:
Bare bones truck (no ac, no p/s, no p/b, 4x2), NO computer stuff, fixes with a Phillips head screwdriver and Standard sockets 3/4"-1/4". Nice instrumentation. Cheap parts (price, not quality!), classic look even with camo paint job, gas mileage comparable to newer machines. Two wheel drive still does the snow and ice and offroading, it's a solid son of a gun compared to friends' plastic Chrysler products (Fords just aren't even close to cool anymore, I guess). Left me stranded once (a whole 2 miles from home), and that was an aftermarket part failure ('stat, a quick fix).
Weakness:
Trim might have been hot stuff in the 60s but over time speeds up the inevitable rusting process. Major polluter, but then again, those emissions regulations are widely violated and otherwise a p.i.t.a. Stock motor is an inline six 250ci and I wouldn't mind the available-at-the-time 6-292. Three speeds are ok, the modern five would make it a little better highway cruiser. Biggest hassle is having to break and drill out fasteners when replacing parts that have rusted in place. Vacuum advance/HEI distributor exhibit typical glitches. Lower compression ratios than new cars=less horsepower in relation to displacement. Steering wheel (non-tilt) is not friendly to persons with large stomachs. I can't knock the old beast; it was pre-beaten and pre-broken when I bought it and after a little TLC (about $2000 worth) it's darn near perfect. Its advantage over new cars lies in the fact that what I fix STAYS fixed...no recalls, none of those repeated trips to the dealer for stupid things. The truck has made a name for itself in towns I don't even live in! I believe you can't beat a good pickup for cruising, hauling, camping, whatever, and I highly recommend the 67-72 Chevy pickups to anybody who can handle an antique or classic car: they are simple to restore (like any Chevy), fun to drive and easy on the eyes. Similar Products Used: 1988 S-10: '88 was a BAD year for makes besides GM's, it seems, but those little S-10s are just queer. Compacts just do not compare to full-size trucks, and v-sixes were a pretty poor deviation from the straight-sixes. The redesign in '73 went smoother than the redesign in '88, no doubt about that. |

check engine light goes on and off all week long, wiper motor sucks quits when it wants too, kind of hard on gas,no heated leather seats, I love chevy trucks and chevy products, in my opinion they make the best trucks on the road, i hope that there would be a recall on the wiper motors and the engine check lights but other than that i have no complaints,Please recall my requests or let me know if general motors has already done so. Great ride, body still pretty good, best fishing buddy you could ever ask for.
Weakness:
Not quite enough pulling power. Fuel mileage suffers greatly while trailering. I have had some hard luck. On vacation one winter the alternator left me 40 Km from NorthBay On. Another vacation cost me a crank bearing while trailering my Bayliner boat. Blew the head gasket and my transfer case. All this under 90 000 Km. Oil changes ever 5000 Km. I've talked to some of my buddies up here and the also blew their crank's on their 305's. Similar Products Used: 90 C1500, Can't compare ( 4x4 or nothing ) |

The 350 TBI engine is easy to work on yourself, and it runs good and sounds incredible compared to V8s from other manufacturers. Nearly 200K on the engine, and it still runs beautifully. The truck was WAY ahead of it's time...it still turns heads, and it's 13 years old.
Weakness:
The brakes are an absolute joke for a truck that weighs well over 2 tons. I have to stand on them hard sometimes just to make a stop at yellow lights. There was a recall on all GM trucks for this brake problem...but I guess not many people responded to the recall. The all-around engineering of this truck is a joke. I think they hired some high school kids to design it. The fuel pump stranded me once. The transmission locked up and stranded me once (that was over $1,000 to fix). The truck HATES water...once, on a really humid night, enough moisture was in the air that my truck barely started and ran like crap until the sun came up the next day. There are not many mud shields, so if you get off road, expect to spend tons of quarters getting the dirt out of every little hole and corner. Gas mileage sucks...lucky to get 15 mpg on the highway. The windshield wipers develop a mind of their own in the carwash. The tailgate rattles so much that it's anoying to open the rear glass. The door seals are a joke. I had to replace the motor that engages the front differential..it died in the middle of a snowstorm and left me with two-wheel-drive only. The turning radius is terrible...takes an acre to turn..hard to drive in tight parking lots even though it's short wheelbase. I could go on and on..but you get the picture...typical GM product. Don't get me wrong, I love my Chevy 4x4. It sounds like a racecar with the Flowmaster exhaust, and it is easy to take care of on you own (easy to get to the plugs, change the oil, work on the engine, etc. Overall it's been a pretty nice truck, and it's the most beatiful model truck ever built in my opinion. However, the engine and access to components is where the truck's stong-points end. In every other catagory you can rate a truck in, Ford by far is superior. (Maybe that's why they have outsold Chevy each year since '79, and the F-150 is the number 1 selling VEHICLE in the world.) Dodge is making a nice looking truck now, but mechanically they are junk. Your best bet is to drive a new one under warranty, or GET A FORD. I know Chevy is more popular (though I don't know how), but trust me, I have owned both, and without being biased toward one or the other, my Ford was twice the truck. Similar Products Used: 1992 Ford F-150. My F-150 was only three years old and had 130,000 miles on it, and it NEVER left me stranded. I don't care what anyone says, there is absolutely NO DOUBT that Ford builds a better truck. I got 21 mpg on the highway with my F-150, and could tow anything I tried to. It was super dependable, well engineered, and had almost NONE of the problems my Chevy did. I would recommend anyone looking for a used pickup to get a 1992-1996 model Ford F-150, preferably with the I-6 engine. You won't be disappointed. |

Chevy K1500 W/T
Strength:
This is the best darn truck you could have. It just don't quit. I have owned it since it was new (I think this is where some people get into trouble buying a used vehicle that has been "Whaumped on")and have 270,000 mostly trouble free miles and it still keeps going. It greatest strength has got to be it's reliabilty and ease of repair.
Weakness:
The rims did get quite rusty early on (around 100K) and the wiper motor did fail. But considering the abuse this baby has taken, I am surprised that there are any rims left at all. The Dealer installed cruise is a joke! Dealership mechainics are mostly idiots and the sales people are worse yet. Never get anything installed at the dealer. It will always fail! My 1992 4x4 chevy with 4.3 vortec, Automatic transmission and air conditioning is a basic no frills model that just hasn't quit. It is all a modern truck should be, yet you can haul trailers, several sheets of plywood, or pull stumps with this bad boy and it ain't stoppin!! I have only had to perform tune-ups, belt/oil/filter changes and brakes. I also had to replace the alternator and windshield wiper. All repairs/maintenance were easy and only took a short time to perform. I would recommend Chevy look into bringing back the Work Truck option. It rules. Similar Products Used: Compared to the Dodges and Fords I have owned and the Toyotas (Toy Truck in Japanese) I have borrowed this truck kicks butt. It has a better drive-train, handles better and breaks down infrequently. Dodges are clunky in comparison and Fords Management needs to learn how to build'em like they used too. Foreign trucks are small, under-powered and are a pain to work on. If you want to do some work get a chevy. |

Strength:
the 350 vortex motor is very strong, nice smooth ride for a truck. lots of room front and back (but back seats are too square). has very good gas milage for size (about 17-19 city) and (22-24 highway).
Weakness:
transmission sucks: it pops going from 28-33 miles/hour. brakes are very weak and wiper cuts off when running at normal speeds but fine in delay. coolant fittings already leaking at 60,000 miles and plastic trims around wiper arms and window area rattles at highway speeds. chevy needs to bench mark toyota and get there act straight. great motor but no truck to go with the motor. worst truck or car i have ever owned problem wise. Similar Products Used: also have a 1979 chevy with original motor (350 4bolt main) but transmission have been replaced twice. this one is better built than the 1997 model truck period but same problems (transmission). awsome allwheel drive capabilty. |
