The 5.7l Vortech engine is the cheapest by far to maintain. 5.7L Vortech accelerates off the line great.

Weakness:

Transmission is lazy going thru the gears, a shift-kit would be great.

1999 Z-71 EX-CAB 5.7L Vortech, every available option but electric seats. $26,530.00 purchase date 01/12/99. 17.51 mpg highway; 15.61 - city(lead foot) NO PROBLEMS WHAT-SO-EVER. Great Truck

Strength:

Reliable, simplistic design, tough.

Weakness:

Diesel engine not up to the competition. Bad seals

Paid 24,300 in 1998 used with 4000 miles on it. Now have 55,000 miles with very few problems. Had PMD (pump mounted driver replaced under warranty. I live the ride and the handling. Power is smooth, trans is tight. Very easy to service. Recommend these trucks to anyone looking for a reliable, sensible pickup. They are easy to get in and out of. The paint is fantastic (base coat/clear coat). Stereo sounds great!

Brakes

This truck is simply excellent. It is so civilized yet gets it done when it has to. I bought mine new in Feb. 98. I now have 24,000 miles on it.

The only problem that I have had is having to replace the brakes(rotors & pads) at 6000 miles. Then the pads had to be replaced again and the rotors turned at 12,000(all under warranty). I am conscious of downshifting and not riding the brakes so this is a serious defect in the brakes. Also the brakes suck and feel like mush and don't stop very well. Well, now I have 24,000 miles on it and the brakes are just starting to shimmy again. My lease ends in February though, and hopefully I can make it until then.

Other than that, this truck RULES. 100 m.p.h. feels like 50. It is as quiet as a Lexus. The ride quality is like butter. Handling is good(even with a load or towing a trailer). The interior has been great. I have a 70/30 bench seat and it is comfortable even on long road trips and is convenient since it can seat three in a pinch. The rear seat is difficult on long trips, but fine for short ones. The third door is great and I would never consider buying a extended cab without it(and a fourth door for the future).

Everything about this truck still feels like it did when brand new, and I have not had a single problem(except brakes). I am getting about 13/17 m.p.g.

I just ordered a new Silverado to replace this truck. The only three things that come to mind as being significantly better in the new truck are the brakes, rear passenger space, and availability of a fourth door(as of approx. Feb. 2000).

I highly recommend this truck!

Strength:

The Vortec V-8 350(5.7L)is awesome. I tow a boat all around East Tennessee and down to Florida for fishing. Have no problems with the rollie polllie hills of Georgia or the mountains of Tennessee. The truck is fully loaded (power everything) only thing it doesn't have is a toilet. Mechanically the truck is sound, purchased the truck w/ 26K miles and now has 72K miles upgraded brakes and rotors because of trailering. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL(knock on wood). 4 wheel drive transfer is smooth and simple with no significant transfer noises and troubles. The interior is all leather and the controls are straight foward and within easy reach.

Weakness:

Mushy brake pedal. Not comfortable with a 20' Stratos behind me at 70 MPH.
One thing I just found on NHTSB website is the fuel gauge reads short. It is supposed to have a 30 gallon tank and when the gauge is showing empty it actually has about 7 or 8 gallons left.

I would recommend this truck to anyone. It is a flawless truck, I've had it over 2 years with just standard maintenance done to it and not the first sign of trouble.

1995 Chevy Cheyenne. This truck sucked. The brakes would pull HARD to the left regardless of new or used brakes or rotors. The 305 was ok.

Strength:

It looks better than it runs. It did have great steering until Chevy tried to fix it. No problems with the radio yet.

Weakness:

So far we have put in about 10,000 dollars into this truck. We have had the front end replaced about 3 times, the rear end replaced about two times. The seatbelt replaced twice and it still does not work. We took it to two different dealerships and the problems with a oil leak were still not fixed. Oh yeah on top of that we have had to have the engine replaced after it blew at 100,000 miles. We have had this truck in the shop more than we have had it in our drive-way!

We will definatly think twice about buying another chevy. This was not our only problem chevy, we had a blazer before this one and 1 hour after we had it, it died and it was in the shop for 2 months. We had a 4x4 which the 4x4 did not even work most of the time. We could have gotten a ford on the employee purchase plan but we were stupid and we bought a "reliable" chevy truck.

Strength:

The 350 in my 98 1500 extended cab siverado w/auto,3rd,limited slip rearend,is the hot package. Plenty of power when passing or going up hills in the sierras. It gets 18 mpg on the hwyway. Better than Ford or Dodge. No major problems at 45000 mi. The ride is smooth and comfortable.

Weakness:

Spongy brakes. Rough idle and check engine lite went on at 25000 mi. Dealer replaced injector. Same problem again at 40000 mi. This time I disconnectd the positive terminal from the battery for about 30 seconds then reconnected it back. Problem went away. I don't think it needed an injector the first time around.

Since I'm going to keep this truck for a while, I'm going to put a K&N filter kit and a Gibson exhaust system and other accessories to complement and enhanse this truck even further.

Strength:

1. I like the fact that this is a basic vehicle. It doesn't have all these fancy features like a stereo and power assist brakes.
2. I like the fact that it has a bench seat instead of bucket seats.
3.So far it has 196,000 miles (313,600 Km) plus and it still going. My dad now uses it for hunting and fishing only. The rear wheel drive has certainly stopped from doing things that other people with 4x4 do and themselves stuck.
4.I like this vehicle 3 speed Automatic transmission. The L1 certainly is nice and low and is good for slowing down on ice.
5. The vehicle is so ugly, that I once left the key in the ignition and the window rolled down and no one stole it while I was in Beaver Lumber.

Weakness:

1. Not a lot of power. For a V8 engine, I think that it should get more than 140 Hp.
2. Bad for economy 12 MPG in the city and 18 MPG on the highway.
3. lots of rust (well It's 23 years old now)
4. Thermostat and block heater. Engine takes forever to heat up in the winter

* I would recommend buying this vehicle If you like owning a $2000 truck. Some people think it's fun having one, but we have 2. During the months of May through September, I drive a 1953 Dodge Job Rated.
* I you like a quality pickup, don't buy this one. Not a lot of power and it's hard on fuel. Once these vehicles start to rust, they look super ugly and the paint is not even shiny.

ruff & tuff little truck. A/C still works after 18 years(ice cold).Real smooth power. Motor is kinda loud but that's what the a/c is 4.

Weakness:

hard to diagnose problems. motor doesn't run anymore.Hard starting in winter.

The only reason I bought this truck was to mile it out.I've literally driven the snot out of it. Mileage was unknown when I bought it and was not even a concern. After putting 90k on it(estimated)with very little go wrong (Yeah it doesn't run, but I pd 1500 remember?)I live in Calgary(mean time) and work brings me to Ft McMurray on occasion, and U know, the truck never really left me stranded. Ole red's been to Fort Mac several times(800km 1way),Timmins once, and Ottawa once(different trips, both from Calgary).Hell, the ole girl even pulled my project car back to Calgary from Timmins once(2850km),a few visits to the Okanagan, and finally finished duty bringing me to work and back in Joffre countless times. I used 1.5 sets of tires and several oil/air filter changes during my ownership of this truck(2 yrs,60k miles)and do not regret it.Now...if I could only find another one to put my almost new tires on.

This is an execellent truck and it handles much better than the light 3/4 ton trucks. It has excellentent braking power (most likely because of the 13"brakes) and it runs like new. The 350 TBI provides more than enough power.

Weakness:

The thing rides like a tank with its heavy suspension. The TBI unit gives some trouble in that it cuts out and dies when lugged and when the accelerator is just barely pushed the engines speeds to 1750 rpm. before coming back down.

I have only hd it for a short time but it is an excellent truck. It will really take of with that 350 and the 4 spd stick trannie. In the short time I have had this truck I have driven though fields, on icy roads, and even pulled a stuck skid loader from a ditch.
