Toyota Highlander (2010 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The Highlander is Toyota’s car-based midsize SUV, built on a unibody platform with 4-wheel independent suspension. The Highlander offers a tight, quiet ride like a midsize sedan with the higher ride height, available 4-wheel drive, and cargo capacity of a midsize SUV.

The Highlander scores high for its refinement, quiet interior, ride comfort, and flexible and roomy second-row seat. Its 3.5-liter V6 delivers solid performance and 18 mpg overall. The third-row seat is tight and does not fold in a 50/50 split. A new 2.7-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic is available on FWD models.

Strength:

- Smooth acceleration - Comfortable ride (esp. rear seats), - Safe - Enough cargo room for families with less than three kids - Ultimate long-distance cruiser - More favorable pricing than "luxury" SUVs with similar or better features (i.e. MDX, BMW, RX300, etc.) Note: MDX is a nice vehicle but I did not want to be the designated chauffeur so 3rd row seating was not a factor.

Weakness:

- Brakes are a bit mushy and since this is an SUV, driver has to realize that stopping distance is greater than for a smaller vehicle and it should not be driven overly aggressive in turns - Stereo is not the best out there but still sounds good for what it is.

FORGET SUV -- FANTASTIC CAR, PERIOD! Overall, great vehicle which can't be beat for the price. In short, you are getting a simplified Lexus RX-300 with more room for passengers and cargo for thousands less. I've driven the Lexus and it is just too cramped especially if you have kids. My wife and I were looking for a roomy, comfortable and reliable car with good resale value after our son was born. HL V6 LTD is the perfect car. Has everything we need, nothing that we don't. We drove down to FLA from NJ (over 3000 miles roundtrip) to break the car in and the boy just slept through the whole trip as the ride was so smooth! Feels like you are going 65 mph when doing 90 mph on I-95. Absolutely no problems whatsoever except for argument with missus over who got to drive - this has got to be the ultimate long-distance cruise-mobile! I highly recommend the HL and remember to get the V6 version (4 cylinder is too weak). The front face-guard looks way cool with the Millenium Silver!

Strength:

Comfort, carlike, roomy.

Weakness:

Steering wheel seems to far away to be comfortable.

We are a couple months away from purchasing a new Highlander. We are on a tight budget and want to stick to a "bare bones" vehicle and we were wondering if we were to buy the 4 cylinder 2 wheel drive model. Would that engine have enough get up and go for our family of three? Will it do OK on the freeway or passing cars on two lane highways? Thankyou.

I love that it has cup holders for all the passengers in the car. Great System and it is really cousy.

Weakness:

If you do not own the V6 model the engine is pretty weak. It feels like you are driving a car with a DECENT engine. Go V6

Great Vehicle to own among all the other SUV competition. Reliable, Quiet, Roomy, need I say more. If you are really interested in an SUV go with this Vehicle! Pricing is Fantastic, but remember to shop around.

Strength:

A smooth, quiet ride, with Toyota reliability (I hope).

Weakness:

Mushy brakes, acceleration pause, odd gearing, poor ergonomics. Boring to drive, no sex appeal - probably a great car for little old ladies.

After 3 Explorers and a Grand Cherokee I was looking for quality and bought a loaded Highlander. The car is quiet and smooth riding, but totally uninspired and uninspiring. Ergonomics are quite poor, with inadequate driver leg and foot room, poor heater controls, inadequate console storage, rinky dink arm rests, no seat memory, limited onboard computer features. Sound system second rate.

Strength:

It''s black and looks pretty cool, runs great and has lots of room for the family.

Weakness:

I have a couple of rattles in the dash but have not brought it in to the dealer for repairs yet. Rolling down the back window with other windows shut creates some wierd vortex that feels like your eardrums will pop! Strange but true.

Love this car, my wife wanted a honda odesssy, this car saved me from mini-van hell!! I agree with all the reveiws written great ride, drives well ect.

NONE to speak of yet.

This truck is awesome. I went from an Explorer to a Rav 4 to this. The space is unbelievable. The dealership was great. I speacial ordered my car with any options I wanted. Did not have to go with any special packages. Since I live in Florida we do not need 4wd so I can not touch on that but all I have to say is SPACE. With three kids all in car seats this is the only SUV in this proce range I could find that has a nice ride and is dependable.

Strength:

Quality, design, price, ride are far superior than the Fords and Chevys, Nissans, etc

Weakness:

Toyota needs starting to put bigger and wider rims on their cars and SUVs. The wheels looks kind of small for the highlander.

This car is a great car for its value. I know I''ve paid $35G for it, but it is still cheaper than a RX300 and a little bigger, but it rides just like a RX300, even a little more comfortable. How do I know, I test drove a RX300. I like the interior. I ordered BlueStone Metalic color. I think it makes it look smaller from a distance, but people are in for a surprice when they see it closer or saw the interior. Altho, the ride is a little rougher compare the Camry, but compares to other SUVs, this thing is smooth.

Strength:

The Highlander is the smoothest, quietest, SUV I have ever driven or been in. It is a very strong, and sturdy car. There is alot of room, and the car drives better with more people in it. I feel confident and secure when I have a baby, that my baby will be safe in the car. There is so much space in the back and the height of the truck makes it easy to load and unload groceries. There is also a bunch of storage spaces in the car. You can pack up so much stuff to go on a long distance trip and still have tons of room.

Weakness:

Acceleration is a little strange. When you press on the accelerator pedal the car stalls for a second to switch into gear and then it goes faster. This only happens if I am trying to punch the car.

I love this car. Unfortunately, I was hit by a big landscaping truck that lost its brakes within the first 2 weeks of owning the car. I would highly reccomend this car for its safety. The truck hit my left front bumper and tore it off. The front-end frame has an extension, so they were able to replace the front end extension and weld a new one on. I am still waiting for my fog headlight covers that are back ordered right now. I was hit pretty hard. The frame of the car which surrounds the passengers seemed to absorb most of the impact. I felt like I was in a big strong box that shook hard. The car did not move. I was also thrown forward and then hit my head against the headrest. The headrest seemed to absorb alot of the force of my head hitting as well. The seat belt bruised the front of my chest. I was driving through an intersection at 25 mph, when the truck came off of a freeway exit (it is a 40 degree hill) and lost its brakes. Even after the accident when my husband drove the car he said that you couldn''t even hear the engine. The airbags did not deploy, even though my front bumper came off and my left front-end extension frame was bent. Thank god I was driving this car. It saved my life.

Model Reviewed: Highlander V6 Limited

Strength:

Fits the driver and passengers in superior comfort with an excellent climate control system on top of a very smooth and perhaps more silent luxurious Lexus (or better) type ride. Remarkable traction in high gust heavy snow. In over 4 hours of heavily serious blizzard driving recently, I went the distance with absolutely no wheel or skid slippage. I also love the rich top line sound system and wonderful controls. Value wise, I''m thoroughly convinced the Highlander much rather badly beats the more heavily advertised pricey brands of less practical value to the Joe Doe looking just for a darn sensible good value to be extremely happy with. Oh yes. There is also that Toyota reputation that your visits to any repair shop will be rare and, probably, your resale price may be quite better than average.

Weakness:

The outward looks of the Highlander are a matter of taste. At first I was less than thrilled. I''ve since flip flopped in response to its performance excellence and, admittedly, the responce of many people coming up to me quite unsolicted. Ok. Shows how much "clean design" taste I have as to looks. For me, even with the 2002 newly included center console, I can''t find a good fit place for a cell phone. Still, despite less than perfect to my taste center console designers, I shall survive and swear my respect and loyalty to the 2002 Highlander Limited.

I''ve extensively tried all the SUV type varients and this, I''m now convinced, is the best. It''s a very highly competent and comfortable vehicle. A joy to drive whether empty or with full load. Cargo storage space is above average. Acceleration and braking are among the very best. Though not meant for those who worship destuctive type driving in the very worst of boulder (and SUV) busting conditions for "sport," this model excels in safety in the very worst of traction conditions. A magnificent vehicle to possess for 99 per cent of SUV inclined vehicle owners. More directly, it''s the ultimate of those seeking comfort, practicallity and safety (all, my humble opinion) in a very presumably very reliable vehicle.
