Toyota Highlander (2010 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The Highlander is Toyota’s car-based midsize SUV, built on a unibody platform with 4-wheel independent suspension. The Highlander offers a tight, quiet ride like a midsize sedan with the higher ride height, available 4-wheel drive, and cargo capacity of a midsize SUV.

The Highlander scores high for its refinement, quiet interior, ride comfort, and flexible and roomy second-row seat. Its 3.5-liter V6 delivers solid performance and 18 mpg overall. The third-row seat is tight and does not fold in a 50/50 split. A new 2.7-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic is available on FWD models.

Strength:

-Excellent fit and finish -Toyota reliability (I hope) -Very comfortable front/rear seating with plenty of head/leg room -Liberal interior volume with compact exterior look -Low height for convenient access -Good power (V6) and traction (AWD) -Predictable, car-like handling -Quiet, smooth ride -No-nonsense looks. Not a "cute-ute" or a "pretend-offroader".

Weakness:

In order to see the speedometer I must have the wheel at maximum uptilt which places the wheel a bit too far away.

The vehicle (V6/AWD) came from Canada so I got their "package B" which provides leather seats, and a considerable list of other useful options, in the base (non-Limited) model. I probably paid what MSRP would be if such a US version were available. Drove the car the 100 miles home in snow squalls and strong, gusty winds. No problem, it was like driving a decent sedan...almost boring. Next day, 8 inches of fresh snow. Drove down the mountain to get the mail (a trip that would be unthinkable in my pickup without a substantial load) and returned with no wheel spin or skidding. Antilock kicked in a couple of times with no surprises. No problem...almost boring. Next two days warm then bitter cold. Frost heaves on our country roads like boulders, many pavement cracks and potholes, so, as a test, took the car out on these roads today and drove FAST. Very predictable handling, no suspension "hopping" or skidding, little body lean, and only modest tire impact noise. Not boring today, but almost.

For everyone that keeps saying Highlander 4x4, this vehicle does not have four wheel drive(4x4) as an option. It only has AWD, which is completely different.

Strength:

Driving and handling unsurpass. Toyota quality based on my 15 years of experience of driving toyota cars-with reasonable care should last 10-20 years.I have a Corolla 12yrs old still running 40 miles daily no problem.Forerunner 6 years no repair just tune up. My sister''s Rav4 6 years running with no repair just tune up.

Weakness:

Expensive.Toyota added useless accessories so that they can jack up the price.Tooooooooo expensive. Lacks removable 3rd row seat for large family.

I like this SUV-CAR for the following reasons: 1.220 horsepower, amazing speed and split seconds acceleration in the hilly street of San Francisco. No jerking and no hesitation whatsoever . 2.Style doesn''t look ugly and goofy unlike some SUV and Vans.Plain and simple. 3.Smooth driving control when on the freeway and streets.Runs like a car 4.Roomy interior. Not to balky outside 5.Excellent accessories inside.eg.radio,cd,tape,drink holder everywhere, front seats control.

Strength:

THere is tons of room in the back and it accelerates and turns very nicly. THe seats are comfortable and interior is laid out nicely and easy to use. Very good looking and sleek.

Weakness:

no electric seats in 4-clyinder. THe v6 model is not cheap. Not many around so hard to bargain down but it can be do if you shop around

I loved this SUV. It drives so nice and quiet. THe 4 cylinder doesn''t lack any power at all and it can cruise at 70 mph will no effort.

Strength:

Quality. Ssmooth Lexus transmssion with it"s seamless shift. Roomy interior with exceptional visibility. Stays glued to the road at highway speed.

Weakness:

Absolutely none.

I have owned 2 4-Runners, 1 Celica, 2 Camrys and 1 Toyota Pick-up + 30 other makes & models. My Highlander is the best of the bunch. I have driven it in extreme winter conditions over high mountain passes on a high speed 4 lane highway. Nothing interferes with the handling of this vehiclce. It is solid, responsive and of very high quality. Interior comfort and convenience is un-matched in any other vheicle I have owned or driven. Needless to say, I like my Highlander very much.

Strength:

Toyota quality, very smooth ride - better than many sedans I have driven. Very comfortable to drive & good fuel economy for an all wheel drive. The Highlander sits up higher than a Jeep Cherokee but rides like a Lexus sedan (well, almost).

Weakness:

Not many. The biggest drawback is all of the "luxury" items that come in the packages with the Highlanders on the dealer''s lots. Also - don''t lower the rear window without opening the front one or your eardrums will be destroyed.

We just purchased a new Toyota Highlander. The reviews on this website helped with our decision. The Highlander drove (and looked) far better than the 10 or so SUVs that we took for a test drive. The quality of the vehicle was second to none . We didn''t want to pay the extra $4,000 for all of the options that came with the V6 Models but after driving the 4 cyl. we decided that if we were spending this much money we might as well have fun driving it. The 4 cyl. was ok but I really felt that a 3900 lb. SUV is meant to have a V6. Toyota obviously makes a good deal of money by selling you things like keyless entry, power seats, and roof racks with the V6 AWD models.

Strength:

The ride and handling of the vehicle is awesome. I test drove several SUV''s before the Highlander, including the Pathfinder, Trooper, and Grand Cherokee, and they were not close to the comfort and appeal of this vehicle.

Weakness:

I have to wait four to five months to get the vehicle I want, but it is well worth it. The Highlander''s on the dealers lots have an additional $2000 in options. Some advice, this vehicle can be special ordered with only the options you want; I was told by one dealer that it could not, but I called Toyota and found out otherwise.

After going back and forth between dealers, I went with a local dealer I discovered through an internet service. My vechicle includes the following options: alloy wheels, privacy glass, roof rack, cargo cover, and floor mats. I highly recommend using an internet service to buy this vehicle.

Strength:

Good looks, quick acceleration (even with the 4 cylinder), good handling, cushy comfort and roominess, practical dash display, and very good gas mileage.

Weakness:

I go along with most of the reviewers in saying that the price is too high. But then with the quality and reliability one is getting, perhaps it is worth it. And especially if you can talk the dealer down to $1,000 above INVOICE price, as we were able to do.

We are in the process of ordering a Highlander and we have until tomorrow afternoon to decide on whether to get a 4 cylinder or the more powerful 6 cylinder. We want the good gas mileage of the 4 cylinder, and for most of our driving needs, I am sure it would be adequate (going by the previous reviews of Highlander owners who have the 4 cylinder). But we will also be towing a 2,000 lb. pop-up camper with it a few times a year and are wondering if the 4 cylinder will do the job. We are getting the tow package and Toyota assures us that with the tow prep package one can tow up to 3,000 lbs. Most of our driving will be in flat country, but we do some camping up the North Shore of Lake Superior which has some fairly steep hills to maneuver. If someone (with a 4 cylinder that has actually done some towing) can help us out here (in the next 2 days!!), we would sure appreciate it. Again, we really want to stay with the 4 cylinder if at all possible. Having said that, I should say something about the test-drive we took a few weeks ago. We were amazed with the quick acceleration. If the salesman had not told us it was a 4 cylinder, I would have guessed we were driving a 6 cylinder with plenty of horsepower. The handling was, as many other reviewers have stated, very good. We were especially impressed with the overall comfort and roominess of the interior, along with the quiet ride. An added bonus is the beautiful dash and the practical layout of all of its controls. We had heard and read so much about how firm Toyota dealers were when it came to "wheelin and deelin," that we were afraid to start the bargaining process. We did have a good bargaining chip though....we had 2 dealers within 50 miles of each other and they are well-known for their fierce competition. We ended up going back and forth several times and eventually settled with one of them for $1,000 above invoice ($2,400 below MSRP). According to most of the reviews on this website, we got a very good deal! $26,500 is not a bad price at all for such a reliable SUV with MANY options, including a moon roof, power driver''s seat, keyless entry with anti-theft system, aluminum wheels, luggage rack, rear spoiler and a tow prep package with tow hitch and converter. The only drawback on getting such a good price on an SUV with handpicked options, is that we had to order it factory direct.

Model Reviewed: Highlander 4WD V6

Strength:

- Nice clean classic styling with no added gaudy cladding - Solid construction, exterior/interior fit and finish with exceptions - Powerful, smooth V6 with great handling/breaking and comfortable suspension with no noticeable body roll, almost car like - Overall attractive, comfortable interior with high seating positions and good visibility - Very good heating system - Minimal wind noise for a boxy vehicle - 2002 centre console and storage areas throughout the vehicle - Easily foldable rear seats with good cargo space in return - Good IIHS crash test ratings - Better than average Toyota reliability

Weakness:

- Ticking fuel injector noise when idling, particularly loud when cold - Fog lights only available with Limited version -Choice of only one leather interior colour (Ivory) - Cheap Goodyear Integrity tires - Dash lighting is not colour co-ordinated - Hard to read trip computer - Thin interior carpeting - Leather seat construction could be better, already have folds and wrinkles in the seat bottoms - Passenger air bag cover has developed an annoying visible rectangular imprint with faint raised ridges of whatever is underneath it, most noticeable at certain angles.

We had the following requirements when shopping for an AWD car-based utility vehicle. Mid-dimensions with V6 power using regular octane, comfortable ride with minimal body roll, good interior storage and reasonably priced. After a lot of research and test-drives of various SUV’s in my price range, we choose to buy a Highlander and overall it’s a good vehicle although somewhat overpriced and overrated.

Similar Products Used:

Test-drove various comparible SUV''s and even with some shortcomings the Highlander was still the best of the lot.
