i checked (E) for all the above. get smart my friends and realize a vehicle is your worst investment, but if you have to own a 4x4...let toyota be your choice. sometimes even common sense can be genious. i own it, no monthly payments to the credit union and it just won't stop running.

Weakness:

for those who hate the stiff ride of a 4x4, just change the front end shock to something more giving and you will feel the difference.

HOLY COW!!! this is the best damn truck in the world. i have been able to do all tune-up work myself(no need for over-paid mechanic). had one recall for belt crank. i thought i would take truck in and they would just replace the crank....HELL NO!!!! they replaced all the front end and top end gaskets, timing belt, all belts, the entire crank asembly and associated parts. and they took my truck to the car wash.:):):) DAMN TOYOTA!!! why do they have to have such great customer service. why do they make an engine any tom, dick and harry can work on(with the assistance of a mechanics manuel). my truck has 170,000 miles on it and it hums like a BEAUTY. it climbs pikes peak back roads like someone paved the way before i got there. my v6 will sit with your v8 anyday. toyota is the king.

Strength:

Quality, looks, driveability, quality (did I say that already?), durability of the brand. Ground clearance for when I go hunting......just plain perfect vehicle!

Weakness:

No manual tranny available anymore. But the auto-shifter does seem to work well. Time will tell if I can tolerate the boring just-steer-me-not-drive-me tranny. Pretty pricey, but resale value makes up for that!

This is a vehicle that gives you total confidence when driving.....ANYWHERE! The quality and just overall "goodness" is unbelievable. This is my 3rd Toyota, and, as with the previous 2 (85 Supra and 88 MR2 Supercharged), this one is an absolute joy to drive. Flawlessly assembled, and feels as if it will stay that way for many-many miles.

Strength:

Looks, reliability, resale

Weakness:

Lack of power, lack of cabin room for the driver, not the best fuel consumption(but if I wanted it I would have bought a Prius)

This veh is great, I use it in the Rockies, I haul a boat and use in on many back roads and have never been stuck, the ground clearance is great. I have the V6, 5 speed the 4WD works fabulous. The only mechanical problem was at approx 38,000km the clutch spring developed a wicked creak and the dealer replaced the assembly and so far it''s okay. If I was to purchase again I would go for the automatic.

Strength:

- Great looks - huge sunroof - good ground clearance, never bottomed out - silky smooth road/highway car, but only in good weather - power roll-down rear window - good driver position and visibility - really bright lights - surprisingly fun to drive

Weakness:

- weak V6, (spoiled by Jeep V8s) - WEAK sound system, I''ve had to spend close to $1,000 to compare to the stock system on my ''99 Grand Cherokee - harsh suspension (as mentioned above) - lack of creature comforts compared to Grand Cherokee (power seats, auto dimming mirrors, auto lights, heated seats) - lack of seat adjustability, you''re very low to the floor (I know I should''ve gotten power seats) - Not very serious 4WD, it''s really two wheel drive even though it might say 4WD, one wheel in back, one wheel in front, diaganol to back wheel) - a NIGHTMARE in adverse conditions, must drive w/4WD engaged (Grand Cherokee is always in four [true four]) - awful cupholders - wood dash trim is deteriorating, looks pretty bad now - Chrome bumpers dent VERY easily, GET PAINTED PLASTIC ONES IF YOU CAN!!!! - finicky alarm system, pretty complicated compared to simple Jeep one - smallish gas tank - disappointing off-road ability - REALLY thin doors, like a Kia or something OVERALL a strong vehicle, would rather drive the 4Runner on a hot sunny day than my Grand Cherokee, but only on a hot sunny day - If there''s rain, snow, or mud, I leave the 4Runner at home.

Overall, an adequate SUV. It looks great-(black paint)I find people subtly admiring it sometimes when I drive by. It gets good gas mileage, but at the sacrifice of a powerful engine and a competant 4WD system. Hate the suspension, very harsh ride and you feel like the vehicle skids sideways sometimes when you hit bumps - slightly lose control. After 85,000 miles I''ve found it to be extremely reliable - perhaps why it''s a bit overpriced.

Strength:

Looks, dependability.

Weakness:

Price, engine power.

Love this vehicle! I have never been stuck in the snow, 4WD works great. The only mechanical problem has been water pump went out at 50K miles. Had timing belt replaced as preventive measure and mechanic found water pump leak, so this was covered under warrenty! The only real complaints are weak acceleration and the shifting to upper gears won''t happen until engine is warmed up. I can''t go over 40 mph when it''s cold. The alternator also is not quite right. I have to buy a new battery every 2-3 years.

Strength:

Reliability, resale, power.

Weakness:

Handling!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAARGH!! Stereo!! CD changer! Very thin, aluminum doors. Lighter than a Honda Accord''s doors. Scary.

I bought this impulsively. Compared to many SUV''s on the road, the 4runner is beginning to look VERY old. I bet Toyota is going to give it an overhaul VERY soon. Look at the Highlander.. all the modern moldings and stuff. My 4runner looks dated and it only has 2,000 miles on it. I wish I would have bought something else now but that''s life... I''m stuck with it for 3 years. The one thing I want to mention here is the handling - or lack thereof. This vehicle is - bar none - the absolute worst performing SUV on the market. When I hit a pothole I SWEAR it feels like the entire back end is about to fall apart. The whole vehicle feels like it''s sliding slightly when you hit a hole or indulation. At higher speeds this vehicle feels very unstable. I have experimented a few times when the road was lonely and jerked the wheel slightly at about 70 mph. Almost lost control. I will NOT take this vehicle over 70mph because I don''t feel safe in it. Period. To anyone who can offer guidance on aftermarket suspension upgrades: PLEASE email me ASAP.

My wife and I are very happy with the 4-runner. I bought the 4-runner because of the reliability, looks and the overall performance of it. We almost didn''t buy it because of the price but now we know that it was worth it and we both love it.

We also looked at the MDX, Highlander, Forester and Honda CRV. The MDX and Highlander are a more luxury SUV but we wanted a true 4x4. The forester and Honda CRV didn''t match up.

Strength:

It''s a Toyota. Great looks. Plenty of power. Decent gas consumption for a 4X4. Huge sunroof.

Weakness:

It''s black, hot for the desert....but the deal I got---how cares?

Just got one of the best deals in my life on a 2000 with a V6, 5 speed, 4X4 and completely loaded. The truck only had 9,000 miles when I bought it. This is my 3rd Toyota 4X4 product I have owned. This particular vehicle is my replacement for my 1994 which has over 200,000 miles (still runs like a champ). Simply put, I love this truck. It looks great, has plenty of power (with the manual transmission) to climb the mountain passes and plenty of power to blow right by people on the many 2-lane highways here in Nevada.

Strength:

Toyota quality. Good looking body. Stance is aggressive. REAL 4x4 transfer case. Excellent resale value. Low maintainance.

Weakness:

HP,HP,HP (lack thereof). Small fuel tank. Thin seat fabric wears quickly.

Very satisfied with overall quality. However my biggest gripe (other than needing another 25HP) is the SMALL fuel tank!! 18 gallons in a SUV?? I can fill it up and drive for 2 days and already be down to 1/2 tank. Needs at least a 22-24 gallon tank to minimize twice a week fill ups (avg. MPG for mine is 16)
