Strength:

Looks 4x4 capability Roominess

Weakness:

poor gas milage adequate power but could use a little more

So far, I am enjoying my choice of vehicle. Xterra is roomy enough for me (I am 6" 2" and 225) and has plenty of cargo room for my frequent weekend trips to go fishing, hunting, etc.... Used the four-wheel drive while deer hunting in Northern PA. and didn't have any problems getting back into the woods on muddy/snowcovered logging roads. My 4x4 SE was a little over $24,100 with incentives and rebates applied minus tax, title and plates. So far so good. As with all the other reviews, I wish it had a little more power (180 h.p.) especially considering the poor gas milage, but i expected this.

Strength:

My XTERRA can take us almost any place we want to go. She is classy, and sassy. Love to backseats also because my grandchildren LOVE to be able to look out the windows instead of looking at the side of the door.

Weakness:

My husband and I tried to drive our XTERRA up one of our tallest mountains on the island of Hawaii, we had NO power at all and had to finally turn back around and go back down. Didnt want anyone to know that my "does everything" SUV couldnt get up moutains that I have seen cars get up... :( ALSO, when I bought my XTERRA I read everything in the manuel. I read that you can use "recorded CD's" but they might not play. Well I do make copies of CD's and use the BEST blank CD's around. But after a year of owning our XTERRA, my CD player is DEAD. Took it back to were we bought it and was told "YOU CANT USE THAT KIND OF CD's in a XTERRA". HELLO, I READ THE BOOK AND IT SAID THAT THEY MIGHT NOT PLAY, not that I COULDNT USE THEM. Needless to say, two years later we are without a CD player even though I went to the dealer and wrote to Nissan. Which really sucks when you think bout how much we paid for our XTERRA! Feel like the dealer and Nissan really don't care at all bout us and our feelings. I could really blow this up and get something done bout it, but you know, life is way to short and outside of that I love my XTERRA. Um but has anyone else had a problem that when you start it up that the brakes makes noises? We have taken her to be checked for this, but they say everything is good. Right, and when my brakes don't work, somehow they will blame it on us I bet ya!

I love my XTERRA, it is beautiful, classy, and takes my husband and myself "almost" everywhere we want to go. Have had many ppl ck out my XTERRA and they have also now bought one of their own. I bought my XTERRA because it had everything on it I wanted after doing major research on SUV's. Plus with my name being "Terra", it sort of drew me to it is you know what I mean! *wink*

Strength:

I like the outside looks and I like the way it handles.

Weakness:

Poor quality.fabric on the seats loose and thin, scratched up covers on the gauges, carpet, buttons and knobs are flimsy and cheap. Also I don't know how many other owners of the Xterra did not know until long after the deal was signed that their wonderful rig that had a first aide kit, did not have the little things that most of us until now look for, like being a smoker I think an ash tray and lighter would have been cool,a glove box light and vanity mirror would have also come in handy from time to time.I really don't think that the price of these vehicles is that much less than their competition but one thing that I am sure of the quality of their manufacturing is

I would not recomend this SUV to anyone,I purchased my Xterra on 07/05/03, and on 10/06/03 my brakes failed while trying to stop for a red light and I smashed into the car in front of me and they in turn hit the car in front of them, causing major damage to all three automobiles.Thank God that there were no serious injuries.I have other concerns about this truck seeing that at about 35 mph. my airbag did not deploy while my empty passangers seat did (go figure)This is very sad situation seeing how I had just had the rig serviced and mentioned that I had some concerns about oil leaking from the front wheels and blowing down the side of the truck and vibrations in the accelerator while in reverse, also a vibration in the front end at about 40-45 mph. all three of these problems checked out to be normal according to the dealership and I was not to worry. The dealership says that my brakes and airbags are just fine and that I must have not been paying attention, even though there were no skid marks and the driver behind me saw my brake lights.I feel that between services issues, quality of the parts and manufacturing and the awful gas milage of this vehicle, that if I had it to do over again I would run the other way, and fast!! I can only wish that like most everyone else that I could turn this in at the end of it's lease or thirty day trial period but unfortunately I paid cash for it.

WATCH THIS TRUCK! A COWORKER AND MYSELF HAVE HAD BRAKE PROBLEMS, WINDOWS PROBLEMS, NOISES FROM THE AC AND LOUD SOUNDS AT STARTUP. WE HAVE BOTH HAD THESE AROUND A YEAR. I HAD TO TAKE MY TRUCK BACK 3 TIMES TO FINALLY GET THE BRAKES TO FEEL NORMAL. THE BRAKES WOULD STUDDER WHEN I HIT THEM AND NOW I DONT THINK MY ABS IS WORKING ANYMORE. EVERYTIME I HIT THE BRAKES FAST, I HEARD MY TIRES LOCK UP. AS FOR THE SOUND WHEN I COLD START THE TRUCK, THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR ABOUT THREE MONTHS AND UNLESS I LEAVE MY TRUCK A WHOLE DAY AT THE DEALER "AGAIN", THEY CAN NOT HELP ME WITH THE PROBLEM. AS FOR THE GAS MILEAGE, I AM GETTING ABOUT 18 AT THE BEST SINCE I HAVE OWNED THIS "SMALL" V6 SUV. I TRAVEL AT LEAST 20 MILES ALL HIGHWAY TO WORK. THE GAS MILEAGE IS WORSE ON THE WEEKS I DRIVE MORE IN THE CITY. MY COWORKER AND I ARE BOTH LOOKING FOR A NEW VEHICAL TO WARRANT SOME PC OF MIND. PLEASE LOOK ONLINE AT OTHER USERS THAT HAVE HAD THIS SUV OVER A YEAR. BY STATS, MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KEEP THIS SUV OVER TWO YEARS AND SHOW A LOT OF COMPLAINTS AFTER 60K MILES. FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO BUY.

Strength:

Cool, aggressive styling, great quality of workmanship, good value for the dollar, and a lot of standard equipement that you would have to pay for should you consider another make.

Weakness:

The engine, even though gives a very good gas mileage could use 20 more HP. It gives good acceleration on level surface, but it is not as peppy going uphill. Then, again, I did not buy a sportscar, so .. no complaint.

I just bought a brand new Xterra, 4cyl, 143 HP. The selling price with dealer incentives and Nissan rebate was ...$15,995 plus tax and fees ! Awesome!I must say that I love this car. The styling is aggressive, and it sets this vehicle apart from the others. Even though it has a smaller engine it runs pretty fast. I get decent gas mileage, about 20 mpg - city/hwy combined. This vehicle behaves well on the straight surface, however, going uphill it takes a little bit more time to get the momentum. The quality and fishish are excellent - none of that cheap stuff offered by Korean or some British brands.

Model Reviewed: XE 4x4 V6

Strength:

Great ground clearance Good looks Purchase price affordable Is cheaper on insurance versus the Rodeo, (but in the long run, constant refueling adds up and well past insurance rate for Rodeo.) Fantastic off-road - if that's your main purpose for this beast, by all means it can keep with the best.

Weakness:

Weak manifold - already cracked. Alternator went bad. Very thirsty, bigger V6's with heavier frames are getting better mileage. V6 leaves a lot to be desired; even for average laid back driver. Getting caught in cross wind is scary. Must say though, that I expected less than par with gas mileage from other people's reviews. However, didn't think it would handle this bad overall (i.e. engine performance)

Can't say I like it very well. Traded in 91 Izusu Rodeo for it; the Rodeo had well over 150K miles on it and ran more powerful then the Xterra does, with a lot less gas required and more torque at the pedal. Still have other Isuzu, 97 Rodeo, V6 with 112k - it too has much more power getting 20-22 mpg versus the Xterra, which only has 8K miles and 14-15 mpg at best. Gutless in the high rockies; I refuse to drive it up and down I-70. However, is great off-road from what I've experienced thus far. Shorter wheelbase makes turning radius much more pleasant.

Strength:

Fun, fun, fun!!! I'm in my late 30's, sop I'm not as addicted to the gas pedal as I used to be. Drives and handles great, though. Pretty comfortable, considering how 'uncushy' it is. Been to Vegas and back in it twice already, LA and back several times, and it's never gotten tiring to drive, even after several hours. Decent stereo, has all the basic features (A/C, power windows, cruise, etc). FOUR power ports inside! Very useful for me... I'm a photographer, and always have lots of junk to plug in! Looks great, drives well on AND off the road! I've taken it over stuff I never would have expected to. Awesome ground clearance, but not absurdly high to climb in and out of. Not TOO expensive to insure, even with 4x4... less than I thought it'd be... about $400 a year less than the Mitsubishi Montero Sport, another vehicle I was considering. Side note: Fun community of Xterra enthusiasts out there. Been out with the local SoCal Xterra Club: www.sccxterra.com.

Weakness:

Gas mileage is about 15MPG.. not great, and it's NOT because the thing is really powerful or anything... it isn't! Fine for normal driving, but accelleration, especially uphill, leaves a lot to be desired. Haven't tried towing anything yet. For the power, I'd probably get the Supercharged one if I were to buy another one, but it scares me how much worse the gas mileage will get! Annoying: Instrument gauges are IMPOSSIBLE to see during the day! At night, with the lights on, they're fine. I think for 2003, they made the gauges white, so that should have fixed that. No locking Gas Cap, but Stant makes an aftermarket one that works very well.

Funnest vehicle I've ever owned! Definitely recommended, but get used to an unispiring combination of bad gas mileage AND lack of power!

GAS MILAGE SUCKS ON THE NEW SUPER CHARGE 6 CYL. XTERRA.

I had a 2000 6 cyl., now I have the 2002 Super charged 6 cyl. I expected the milage to drop, but I get 10 MPG in the city. I got 7 MPG towing. That is unacceptable. Nissan service says that is just what I have to accept. Anyone out there have any suggestions? If this is the standard, DO NOT PURCHASE. My 13 year old carberated vehicle gets 6 more miles per gallon than this Xterra.

Gas Mileage sucks for a V6, but using synthetic oil I got 17mpg on the highway roadtripping from KC to Denver.

The best vehicle I've ever owned. Eats the mud, climbs steep inclines, and looks nice in the driveway. I still like the square headlights better...
