Strength:

Solid ride both on and off road, comfortable ride. Quiet ride, carries 5 people and their camping gear no problem.

Weakness:

Minor rattle that I think I've diagnosed (seal broken loose at driver side window). CD player heats up like mad - to the point where I'm afraid to touch it after I've been driving for a while (I've no idea why, but I'v heard others complain about this too) but it still works so I'm assuming its not really a problem. I'd always like a bit more gas milage than I get, but so be it....

I've been extremely happy with the vehicle. I'm at 75000 miles, 55000 of that my fault. I bought it off lease at 20000 miles in '98. Its tough and rugged, but performs well on the road too. Can fishtail a bit coming away from a stop if youre too aggressive, but its RWD so that happens. 4WD is solid. Maintainance has been no problem - only repair was a broken torsion bar which cost me 150 bucks or so to fix. Goes through tires like crazy though - you really DO need to rotate them regularly - it'll add a couple 5-10000 miles to their life. Feul efficiency - best I've gotten is 22, worst is probably 18 or so. I average about 19-20 no matter what these days.

In comparison to the other vehicles:
4 runner - I liked the old (pre 96) ones - they were trucks. Theyve made them really cheesy and are still ugly.
Jeeps: Nice to drive, but I couldn't bring myself to risk it with their absolutely notorious transmissions.
Honda CRV: Too "cute" and if you think the PF is anemic in power, try out that one!

I find the power quite sufficient. I've towed another car on a 4 wheel carrier (car was probably 1800 lbs curb weight) and had no problems. Its no sports car, but hey - its no sports car. Youre going to pay for the 3500 lbs of weight. You want more power, youre also going to get about 6-7 mpg less on the roads.

My only hint is buy used. They are a bit overpriced new if you ask me, but they are a good value used and hold their value well.

Oh, and a couple of people have complained about rattles on the roof rack/roof - check the rubber gasket that goes beneath the cross supports - if they are loose theyll flap in the wind. I had to re-cement mine down (used just rubber cement and havn't had any problems)

Strength:

Good in the snow, Cruise control good, Pretty car, good to drive children home from school, air condition good and heater.

Weakness:

The exhaust manifold gasket. The tires wear very poorly and the alignment cannot be completed aligned. Transmission has had some problems.I'm getting a clicking noise everytime I accelerate. EPA mileage rating isn't very good for a small truck. Engine noise at higher RPM's isn't sporty sounding, just noisey Accelerating past 3000rpm is bad. very bouncy, brakes skip sometimes I'm having some electical problem, radio light are off.Weak brakes and horrible squeak Weak engine, Everytime I press the gas lightly and drive slow I hear a sound like a bird, don't know where it's coming from.

Car is good for long trips too.

Strength:

Quality built throughout the vehicle. After switching to BFG All Terrain tires with after market rims that widened the wheelbase slightly, it is very shure footed in 4WD. Never had a problem with traction in sand, mud snow, and ice. It has only been in the dealership twice, for a weak cooling system probelm and an exhaust manifold leak. For owning it for five years, I consider that pretty good. Very comfortable to drive around town and on long trips.

Weakness:

Poor gas mileage and acceleration. I was able to get about 10 more horsepower by tinkering with the air induction system and adding a K&N Filter. I am constantly manually downshifting the automatic transmission to second on corners and switching off the overdrive on long hills. Poor brakes, rear antilock brakes are useless in 4WD, weak AC. The backend like s to try and come around on if you are not carefull while cornering.

Good reliable, solid transportation. One of those cars you drive forever until the wheels fall off. You just have to remember that it is a SUV, not a sports car. Has a few quirks, but overall I wouldn't sell mine. I look foreward to driving it for the next five years.

Strength:

good all weather vehicle. good on road ride.

Weakness:

my main complaint is the use of macpherson strut front suspension on a
supposedly all terain vehicle. trail riding with my friends, which were
ahead of me with a toyota 4 runner, the trail got rough with a lot of holes
and the trail was also a bit rocky. I hit a hole approximately 5-7 inches
deep with some small rocks in it, after my buddy had hit the same hole in
his 4 runner, and I immediately noticed my steering wheel pull to the right
and the pathfinder didn't ride or steer normally after that. I limped the
vehicle home and took it to a local repair center, and found that it had a bent right strut. The mechanic told me that he had heard of several other pathfinder front strut problems, and that he would only use the vehicle for very light off roading. By the way it cost $300.00 to replace the strut and have it aligned.

Good vehicle if used more as a 4 wheel drive car. engine has been quite
reliable, but could use more power and better milage.

Strength:

Smooth ride, quality construction, excellent interior

Weakness:

Expensive, engine could be stronger

(1999 Model) - I spent months debating which sport-utility to buy and pretty much narrowed my choice down to a Toyota 4-Runner, mainly due to its reliability and looks. However, every time I would take one for a test drive or sit around in one, something bothered me about it. It wasn't until by chance that I drove a Pathfinder that I was able to figure out what troubled me about the 4-Runner. Compared to the Pathfinder, the 4-Runner was extremely uncomfortable, cheap-looking interior (especially the fabric), and truck-like ride. The Pathfinder is far superior in all aspects except the engine, which I wish was stronger. I do know that around Spring of 2000 the Pathfinder will be getting a new engine (230 hp) which will put all other comparable sport-utilities to shame. Do yourself a favor and at least test drive a Pathfinder before committing to other vehicles. I did, and I know I would have regretted for many years to come if I passed it up and went with something else.

Strength:

Good looking vehicle. Makes long trips more confortable.

Weakness:

Has never been aligned right; destroys tires because of it. Check engine light constantly comes on during long trips and no one has figured out what it is from. Transmission is shot at 60,000 miles (with most of those miles being highway miles). Customer service is horrible. Dealerships are rude.

At first, I loved this vehicle! Then everthing went down hill after 60,000 miles. That's not right!
