Strength:

Very Comfortable, Great in the winter on icy roads, I feel like I am attached to the ground. pretty good gas consumption for long distance driving as long as you use cruise control. Good storage inside the vehicle for CD's etc.

Weakness:

Hard passenger seat !! There were ALOT of warranty covered problems. It was in the shop for a great part of the first year, all for recall problems. Once those problems were addressed, it was fabulous. 4WD on wet surface only is not good enough, it should be available all the time.

I paid $38G for it and haven't looked back. I love this vehicle and so do my kids. My husband is a die hard sedan man so he doesn't figure into the equation at all. It's 4 years later and time for something new so I've been checking out other SUV's because I'm NOT going back to a car and I don't like minivans. The Toyota 4 Runner is unattractive (really plasticky looking inside) and the Lexus 300 is pretty expensive. I love the look of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but they have too much sway and the seats are squishy. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a 2001 Pathfinder LE. What an excellent engine, too bad it only takes premium fuel.

I love the look of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but my kids get sick from the motion of it and who needs all the problems that come with a Jeep. The 4 Runner has a better rating, but it's UGLY, inside and out.

Strength:

excellent ride off and on road, beefy tires and suspension, good stereo(factory speakers need replacing after a while),very dependable

Weakness:

the engine is horrible! a 4000lb truck needs more than 153 hp. exhaust manifolds need to be replaced every couple of years, bad fuel economy, huge turning radius

i would recommend it to anyone who needs a solid truck for off-road use. The pathfinder is a pain to drive in the city(bad acceleration and gas mileage). If you have a family, buy something else that rides smoother and has more interior room. This truck is made for single guys who don't mind putting up with the weaknesses of the truck in order to have good 4X4 ability.

Strength:

Ergonomics, ride, handling, reliability, uni-body construction, quality engineering. 2001: Gobs of power with the 240hp engine.

Weakness:

'97 engine was anemic. I put aftermarket exhaust and intake system on it, which greatly increased responsiveness.

I put 134,000 miles on my '97 Pathfinder. My only complaint was lack of power, which I solved with aftermarket intake & exhaust. The brakes lasted 80,000 miles. The manifold cracked, but was replaced at no charge. I believe they re-engineered their manifold to solve this problem. I tow a 1,000 lb boat 300 miles every weekend for six months out of the year, and it did just fine. I actually planned to run my '97 for 200,000 miles, but got such a good deal that I bought a 2001 model for its 3.5L engine, which is truly impressive.

I need an SUV. As mentioned above, I tow a fishing boat six months out of the year, and tow a trailer with an ATV on it the other six. I drive every week on gravel roads, levees, and occasional logging roads. I don't need 4-wheel drive, so I don't have it. I do need a truck for ground clearance and towing. It has to be an SUV because I frequently bring passengers and their luggage with me. A pickup won't do.

If you don't do any of these things, you may not need an SUV. Get a mini-van. I had one for ten years when my kids were growing up, and it was far more practical and comfortable for my needs then. If you need a compact SUV, the Pathfinder is the best in its class at the moment.

I've owned two Ford Explorers; put over 100,000 miles on both. Both had numerous reliability problems: Brakes had to be replaced every 20,000 miles, and the master cylinder at 100,000. Alignment needed constant adjustment. One transmission had to be replaced. Speedometers died every 40,000 miles. Turn signal switches had to be replaced. I did like the Ford 4.0L engine, but gave up on Ford because of the other problems.

, stereo, comfort, car like ride, looks, classy interior and classy exterior, a well rounded package

Weakness:

None at all

The 2001 Nissan Pathfninder has exceded all expectations, its has more power and refinement inside and out compared to all in its shadow, Nissan has been there since the beginning of SUV's and its here right now with a stunning preformance of luxury and class all wrapped up in one great looking package.

Thhe new Pathfinder engine is much better than last years. It has 70 more horsepower and a lot more torque. The rims on my car are cool!! There is a smoother ride. The navigation system is the best. The navigation system is much better than the one in the Acura MDX. The Mobile Entertainment System rocks!! This car cannot be compared to the 4 runner.

Weakness:

Everything but the exterior look of the vehicle.

The Pathfinder is a piece of crap. It's been falling apart since the day I got, but the dealer refuses to fix anything. The windshield cracked horizontally along the bottom for no reason (other than improper installation). Moving the non-power seats is loud and sounds cheap. The Bose stereo sucks ass...You can't hear it at all with the windows down on the highway (I paid more for THAT?). Seatbelts are uncomfortable and lock up all the time. They also often get stuck in the doors when you close them. Cupholders poorly placed.

Strength:

Overall quality excellent. Nice interior. Have owned Toyotas for 20 years, like Nissan better. Japanese uncle told us that Nissan is highly regarded in Japan as a quality vehicle. He was right!
This vehicle will run on all kinds of gas. We have not had any problems with the lower octane gases like we did with the Toyotas.

Weakness:

I wish they would put protective moulding on the doors as standard equipment. Waiting for a larger vehicle in the Nissan lineup. My 6 ft 3 in husband would be more comfortable with a few more inches. No other gripes.

I would give the vehicle a 5 star. The service department at our dealership has been excellent. We have only had to bring the vehicle in for oil changes and the routine regular mileage checks. No work has had to be done.

Quality and reliability wise there is no comparison. I guess a BMW SUV or the Mercedes would compare, but not price wise.

Strength:

Dependable, goes-anywhere, great cargo capacity and flexibility, stereo

Weakness:

Periodic maintenance costs, known pathfinder issues

I bought this as a new vehicle in 1995, and I've accumulated about 120k miles to date. I've take my Pathfinder on the beach (surf), cross country and over a long daily commute cycle -- all effortlessly and in comfort. There is no doubt (and in spite of the comments below) that this is a great vehicle, a definite keeper and one I most certainly recommend to anyone.

Negatives - there are some very definite "known" pathfinder issues (I didn't know but the dealer did !). Aside from being somewhat underpowered(1) The heat shield on the exhaust routinely falls off at 50k miles (or has to be removed because it rattles so loudly),(2) The exhaust manifold warps, cracks the mounting studs and separates from the engine block (read noisy, mess in the engine compartment and leaking engine fumes), and (3) electrical switches fail (cruise, fog lights, suspension control).

In addition to this I have experienced (4) that the Speed/Tachometer display craps out ~ 50k miles ($140), (5) by continuously using the remote keyless entry the driver/passenger locks no longer work ($160 each to replace) (6) extensive rust one the tire carrier and side rails.

As I mentioned above - in spite of the nuisances this vehicle is the only one I have ever enjoyed owning. I can't imagine ever parting with it.
