Wow! What a car! Nice inside / outside. Nice looks, nice handling. Love the car. Huge sunroof, lots of space.

Weakness:

No NAV system

Best car I ever had - great ride, fantastic looks, perfect handling. Before buying it I was thinking about Acura MDX. After having my Montero for 1 month, I went and test drove MDX again! Am I glad I bought Montero? You bet!!!

After Montero, Acura MDX feels like a toy, tiny, plasticy, cheap inside, with a tiny sunroof, loud engine and cheap fake of luxury. Tiny bit faster, but looks like a raised Saturn LS and you can feel every bump on the road. You feel pressed into the little space and the break pedal is sticking into your leg. Boy, I felt like a million dollars after I got back into my Montero!!!

Strength:

Awesome 4WD system (Full time or Part Time), The 2WD is good for dry roads and saves gas. Skidplates Galore! Comfortable and Utilitarian at the same time. Excellent ride height. Power is adequate (It's not supposed to be a Viper!) Versatile seating arrangements (Front seats can recline flat into second row seats and second row seats can fold flat into rear jump seats. Engine is quiet and tranny is smooth. I can tow my motocross bikes in the woods in the afternoon and have dinner in downtown D.C. without changing vehicles (Great Styling).

Weakness:

Wind noise at highway speed. Cloth interior doesn't feel plush or durable. Jumpseats are a really tight squeeze (But then again these ARE jumpseats and only used in a pinch). The 2001 seats fold into the floor which is a better design than the fold up, allowing for better vision when the seats aren't used. The spare tire is mounted on the rear door and it hinders rear visibility. They should have mounted the spare tire under the vehicle like the Landcruiser.

I was looking for an SUV to tow my motorcycles. I had been looking for several months at Toyotas. I saw the Montero and remembered all the 4WD articles I had read about it. I decided to give it a test drive and the very next day I came back to buy it. It has only 35K miles and was clean. There is a small dent on the roofline but not noticeable. I simply love this car. I have owned SUVs for the last 4 years and I wanted to buy another. I don't know anyone who owns a Montero so I really did not have any interest in the vehicle until I read the 4X4 reviews and test drove it. I expected a more harsh and clumsy ride but was quite surprised how well it behaved itself on and off road.

1997 Pathfinder - Turned in after lease, did not have enough power and 4WD not as user friendly.
1996 and 2000 Ford Explorer - These were company vehicles, did not have enough power with the V6 and 4WD systems not as good, had several recalls and the 1996 had repeated trips to the dealer for the transfer case.

Strength:

Excellent style, great looks, stands out, attention magnet, great interior, great stereo, fantastic "off-road". Lots of space, great feeling driving it. Sportronic that combines automatic and manual transmition - very handy for a faster ride. Huge sunroof. Great rear-door. Lots of space for my dog in the back. Luxury "look and feel". Great value. Great service - Rick Case Mitsubishi in Atlanta was the best!!!

Weakness:

A little bit slow, would't mind a V8, - but it is not a race car anyway. It has no cassette player

All in all, great car, great choice. Great value. Stands out on the road, gets looks. Luxury and has tons of space.

Similar Products Used:

Acura MDX - great SUV - but noisy and looks like a van. BMW X5 - very nice, but much more expensive. Lexus RX and ML 320 - don't even come close in looks, size and "luxury feeling". Nissan, Explorer - "me too" vehicles. Jeep Grand Cherokee - extremely fast, nice design, but lo quality and "me too"

Strength:

plenty of pep around town. does everything you ask it to off road. the smooth ride around town and on the highway is far superior to other makes of 4x4's i've ridden in.

Weakness:

In the last 6 years the only problem i had was a 300 dollar computer chip replacement due to loss of idle speed control.

i would recommend a 1990 montero to anyone who doesnt need shift on the fly {the auto locking hubs work fine} the a/c works great even tho its 11 years old now. i've never even had to add freon. this vehicle was built to last. i dont think i will ever need to trade it in.

Strength:

Good handling, Smooth ride, Good Looking

Weakness:

Poorly equipped. Fog Lights, Power Antena should be made standard on all models. Upholstery is not as good as the fabric on the Montero Sport.

I highly recomend the Montero because it is good value for the Money. Safety is important, Smooth ride because of the Unibody construction.

Strength:

Best combination of on & off road capability. Comfortable interior for 4 adults. Great stereo.
Zero warranty or reliabilty problems (so far).

Weakness:

Standard Yokohama tires cause vague steering and too much body roll cornering. Replace with Michelin's fixes all the handling maladies.
Engine could do with more low end torque.

Great value compared with the cookie-cutter SUV's from Ford, Toyota & Nissan. Better engineered, and with a high quality interior.
Long enough (w. rear seat down) to take my mountain bike inside.

Replacing the tires with Michelin LTX's improved the handling significantly. Also removed the 3rd row seats to get more luggage space, which has the added benefit of helping the handling. 3rd row seats should be an option.

Still not wild about the 2001 Montero styling.

Strength:

Great styling, great interior room, transmission and 4 wheel capabilities are excellent. All the advantages of a Landcruiser for $20,000 less. Great off road with all the luxury comforts on the inside.

Weakness:

Could use a little more power. Windshield wiper placement causes icing in cold weather climates.

Would highly recommend. This is a great luxury suv with good on and off road capabilities. Decided between 2001 Montero Ltd, 2001 Landcruiser, and 2000 Discovery. Landcruiser nice but almost $60,000 and styling not quite as nice as 91-97 LC (Montero has more rugged/uniques look). Discovery was similarly priced but not as roomy as Montero, terrible gas mileage, and that huge Landrover maintenance issue (I did not feel like having to spent several thousand dollars per year on maintenance).

Similar Products Used:

1998 4Runner (Montero is much larger and luxurious inside, equal off road)
1993 Landcruiser (very similar, I like the Montero 4 wheel drive system much better - nice to have options given in Montero)
