I'm 6'1" 270 lbs and I have plenty room in front and in the second row seats and it fits in my garage. Also the second row seats recline flat (nice feature for long trips). The driving position is perfect and the vehicles handling exudes confidence. From the very first test drive, both my wife and I felt as though we had been driving it for months, no weird "I need to get use to this" feeling, even though my previous car was a 2 door sports car. Superb braking. Very linear and responsive.
Weakness:
Looks... I feel like a naked super model with the amount of attention this truck gets. I've witnessed several close calls because of people turning to look at the truck instead looking where they are going. Now that the 2001 Montero exists, buying a Lexus LX470 or a Toyota Lancruiser is no longer a sound economic decision. Similar Products Used: 2001 Pathfinder test drive. Pathfinder has a lot more 'getup and go' and feels more like a car during normal driving. But it has much less room, and it leans ponderously in corners. The pathfinder breaking is much less sure footed. |

BEAUTY WITH LUXURY. GOOD SUV. NICE INTERIOR WITH LEATHER SEATS AND A GOOD STEREO SYSTEM. NICE LOOKS. PEOPLE ASK ME VERY TIMES THAT U GOT NICE CAR. I LOVE WHEN PEOPLE SAY THAT TO ME. WIDE, GOOD IN SIZE. HUGE LOOKS.
Weakness:
THERE IS ONLY ONE PROBLEM IN THIS CAR WHICH IS COMING IN EVERY CAR OF THIS MODEL IS THAT WHEN THIS CAR GOES ON 60, IT'S STARTS SHAKING. BUT I WENT TO COMPANY AND THEY FIXED IT BY CHANGING THE DRIVE SHAFT. I THINK THIS IS VERY NICE AND BEAUTIFUL CAR. I WILL SUGGEST TO EVERY ONE THAT IF THEY ARE GOING TO BUY FORD EXPLORE, EXPEDITION, OR JIMMY, BLAZER OR 4 RUNNER, LANDCRUISER, THEY MUST FIRST TAKE A LOOK AT THE FATHER OF ALL MID SIZE SUV'S MITSUBISHI MONTERO 2001 LTD. REALLY NICE RIDE. LOOK AT IT AND DECIDE AND CHOOSE IT. OR IF U DON'T WANT TO BUY IT, U R REQUESTED THAT PLZ GO TO UR NEAREST MITSUBISHI DEALER AND TAKE A LOOK AT IT. I WILL RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE. This is a really tough SUV, the safety features are outstanding. It rides like a luxury car, but is still the type of SUV a man likes to own.
Weakness:
NONE We bought a new Montero Sport around the end of March. I was involved in an accident in which I was struck from behind, slid into a ditch and rolled over. I walked away from this accident with one bruise. I cannot say enough about the safety of this vehicle. From the sporty good looks to satisfy a man, to the overall safety to please soccer moms, this SUV is number one in my book! Similar Products Used: No Comment |

Strength:
Not bad on gas. Comfortable. Nice armrests. The "hold" feature on the A/T was nice, especially on cold mornings. Good amount of cargo room.
Weakness:
Poorly designed engine. Not at all aerodynamic. A little wind on the highway and you were wrestling the wheel for control. Lack of basic features. Poorly designed center console. Placement of spare tire really restricts visabilty out of the rear window. Seemed to be a good truck when I first got it, but the LS 3.0L lacks pick-up. It is almost impossible to change oil filter without disassembling front end, and you CAN NOT change your own spark pluges (it requires a $500 trip to the dealership). Did not hold up all that well in a head on collision (as compared to a 1987 Toyota 4-runner). Parts were difficult to aquire, and expensive. Devalued very quickly. Not the smoothest of engines. Similar Products Used: Toyota 4Runner. 87 and 97. Both are better in terms of overall quality and value. Better on gas, more powerful engine. Interior of 97 4Runner is not layed out as well as Montero. |

Love the size, not too big, not to small. Love the large sun roof, seat heaters, stow away third row seats, wood and leather interior. I like the tallness of it... Mine's black with black leather interior - nice looking
Weakness:
I'm having touble with the paint. The rocker panels - the exterior painted area along the floor when either front door is open. The paint started chipping within a month or so of purchase; it's getting bad. I don't wear spike heels; have never had this problem with any other car - - it's obviously a manufacturing defect, in my humble opinion. Wondering whether anyone else is having the same problem? LOVE THE MONTERO - my only hesitation is the paint chipping and whether Mitsu/the dealer is going to do right by me. Similar Products Used: Had a 96 Montero, traded it on on a Blazer - big mistake! Hated it and now I'm back. Looked at Tahoes, Expeditions, minivans **YUK**, Jeeps, etc...the Montero had em all beat. |

I've owned this SUV for 3 year, had 119,000 then and 171,000 now and haven't had to do any repairs at all. I like the lines and the dependability of this truck!
Weakness:
Would like to see the spare tire carried under the vehicle. Better backing visibility. I love this car and can't say enough about it. There's not many on the road but people see it and say "I like your ride" Similar Products Used: Had another '90 Montero several years ago and sold it to my brother in Kentucky. He still drives his and loves it. |

Luggage area great. Sound system great.
Weakness:
Your knee can easily hit the ignition and turn the car off while driving. No mirror light on sun shade visor. Pull off is very slow, poor gas mileage. Very bad breaks, I've had my rotors turned twice, was told that the weight of the vehicle is to heavy for the rotors. I'm ready to trade it in. Mitsubishi Customer Service really sucks. My Montero doesn't ride well in the snow, slides to much. Easily pushed by heavy wind. Breaking is horrific due too small rotors. I would not buy another. My be great for someone else but it's not the SUV for me. Similar Products Used: Didn't test drive anything else, but I should have. |

Strength:
Troublefree 3.5 V6 engine, Active-Trac 4WD, Purpose built, Paint and overall build quality. Rally proven (Dakar Rally). Aftermarket parts galore ie (brush bars, foglamps, wheels etc.)
Weakness:
Mitsubishi's Customer Service absolutely has to be the poorest in the whole automotive industry. They should try to steal some of Infiniti's or Acura's customer service ethics. Ride quality and cross winds(cured with aftermarket shocks), cold morning warm ups. Vague steering. More trucklike less carlike. I love my Montero because it's proven around the world as a true SUV. I have had no engine problems at all. I changed the timing belt at the 60K service. I presently have 99,500 and it's still trouble free. This vehicle doesn't drive like a car so check out the SUV market before buying. All that said I would still definitely recommend this vehicle. It's a very reliable and durable truck. Montero Limited
Strength:
size, disappearing 3rd row seat, autostick & AWD/4wd system, huge sunroof, reasonable gas mileage, independant suspension, disc ABS
Weakness:
limited slip diff not standard on XLS, antenna (should be in glass like land rover & others), tire cover on back looks bad, console should have more character like old Monty or something The full size Montero is really a well rounded suv provided you want a big one. The sporttronic shifting is fun but not as useful as the 2/awd/4wd/4wdL system which appears to be the best of all worlds. 2wd to save gas, awd for rain/snow and 4H/L for true offroad work. Looks are argueable but the leather & sunroof are well done. The color lcd compass should offer more functionality, seems like a waste of a very nice display. Why buy any suv that comes in a 2wd version? Get one designed as a 4wd from the begining. First looked at the Rover Disco II but was turned off by it's 13mpg on Premium gas ($1.70+ now). Then throw in maintance costs and the lack of an incentive like 4.9% financing and the Montero is a clear cut winner. Similar Products Used: Land Rover Discovery II, Montero Sport, Tahoe, 4Runner |
